On arrival, you will be provided with a map and a magnetic compass, yours to use for the duration of the Experience. The aim of the Experience is to share with you the basics of navigating with a map and compass. To do this, you will need to get to grips with a range of simple techniques that are easy to learn, but they do need practice. There is an introduction to maps, map scales and suitable maps for your walking adventures. The compass and its features will be described. Pacing is a great skill and a necessary tool for you to master; essentially you use your paces to measure 100-metres as you walk across the ground. You will understand and identify map symbols and their application when navigating. You will get to grips with and work out a grid reference from the map. You will find out how to calculate a bearing using the compass and to follow it to reach a defined point on the map. You will understand how to measure distance on a map using the compass. You will be given the techniques needed to set the map up and how to navigate with it. You will take it in turns with others joining the Experience, to lead us all to a defined point, using all of the above techniques. I will introduce the hand-held GPS unit and various digital technologies available to you as navigation tools. There will be time for questions throughout the day and on completion. Time for coffee and cake.
I founded Footsteps in Northumberland in 2011. Footsteps is all about offering guided walks, tours and skills training, all three are the mainstay of my business. I hold a national qualification, the Hill and Moorland Leader Award, which I gained through Mountain Training (England), one of the UK's national governing bodies. My day to day life takes me out and about in the wilder parts of Northumberland and the basic tools of my craft are the map and the compass, without which, I would be to put it simply, lost! This means that I have to be competent in their use and over the years I have spent working in the outdoors, I have become an expert in the use of the map and the compass. I get a lot of satisfaction introducing clients to these basic navigation tools and setting them off on their own walking adventures that lie ahead of them.
You will be provided for the session with a Silva Explorer 4 magnetic compass and the relevant laminated Ordnance Survey map…
