Qué harás

Drive through CWM Penmachno, pass the quarry to the end, meeting point on the left, oppersite chapel. Come in wellies. The reviews capture the experience, please read below as written by people's experience:
Imagine driving over a single lane mountain track to a tiny hamlet, hiking up to mine shaft hidden in a forest. The host then unlocks the rusting bars & you walk in a dark tunnel dug 160 years ago, as fresh water streams out, taking you with head torches deep under the Welsh mountains & into abandoned caverns & waterfalls. It's magic, Alice can unlock. Hearty, wet, exciting & magical.
We really enjoyed this experience. It’s a fair trek to the mine but a beautiful one through the woodlands walking up a stream... uphill! The views were amazing!! The mine itself was great and very wet. There’s one part where you climb up a waterfall/steep stream! This was lots of fun but quite challenging and exhausting. Once out the mine, there’s another steep uphill walk. Alice is lovely, very chatty! She isn’t a fountain of knowledge on the mine like her husband, but clearly very experienced walking this route! It took nearly 3 hours as no rushing, no issues waiting for group, we looked around an abandoned village. No phone network here.Highly recommend this trip, very good value for money.
Other things to note
Wellies and water proof coat needed. Bring snacks and water.

I have been exploring the slate mines of North Wales for over 10 years. There is a nice mine at CWM Penmachno, it's an interesting route through, the mountain and out the top. Just need wellies, I provide hard hats and torches. I am a qualified mental health nurse and can provide encouragement and support. I am also a member of the British Caving Association. You need to be able to manage a three mile walk and stairs. I can also give information about the local community and it's history.
My son first went through this mine at the age of 3 years and my father in law was 80 years. I am happy to take children free on this experience.

Amazing and unique experience, highly recommend. The mine is in excellent condition. This walk offers a great opportunity to come into direct contact with history, which is hard to come by nowadays. Mary is very knowledgeable and is happy to answer all sorts of questions. We had an excellent time!

Unfortunately I couldn’t reach the mine but this was due to personal circumstances, however, the walk up to the forest was very nice and there is absolutely no rush so you can walk on your on time, definitely not a walk for first timers like me but still a very nice challenge.

Throughly enjoyable experience, through the slate mines. Magical landscape, with great history behind it. Mary was a very friendly and knowledgable guide; we really enjoyed our time. Would really recommend, but for sure you need wellies!

Excellent adventure for all the family! Today we came to the tour of this fabulous mine with Mary as our guide. It was myself & my husband with moderate fitness levels and our nearly 6 year old son. The initial incline up to the mine is steep but easily achieved, no rush at all. The entrance to the mine is fantastic and such an adventure for our little boy. Inside is ankle deep water in parts. When the guides tell you that you need wellies, you NEED wellies (thankfully we listened!) it’s a fascinating tour into the mine with some Victorian artefacts along the way. Mary is knowledgeable and shared some great facts about the mine. She was also very good with our (very chatty) little boy. There is a climb up an uphill stream within the mine, don’t let this put you off as it’s a steady incline with great footing. The abandoned village is a must see if you are up to it, this fascinated our son a lot! The whole walk took us around 3-3.5 hours with a little boy in tow. So I imagine it could take a little less if no children are with you. However it was a steady, fascinating walk with gorgeous views and something truly to remember. If you’re wondering whether to do this with children and you feel they’re confident with walking and listening, don’t hesitate. What an experience for them! Something to always remember! we can’t wait to do it again. Mary is a lovely woman with lots of experience and knowledge, we felt very safe and secure. Thank you
