We meet at 10 am at my woodland, Coed Obry, 1 mile north of Penrhyndeudraeth where there is secure parking. We carry out medical checks and get to know each other, fit buoyancy aids, paddles and put our valuables in dry bags. We then drive 5 mins to the Afon Dwyryd Canoe access point and unload the canoes. After a safety briefing we paddle upstream for 1 ½ hours (the flow is weak), learning canoe techniques: the J-stroke, turning, trim, poling, and sailing.. We encounter wildlife along this stretch, buzzards, herons, kingfishers, Ospreys in Spring/summer, and a variety of ducks and geese. From 13.00-13.45 we get out at a secluded beach or quiet spot on the bank for our packed lunch. You bring your lunch and I’ll make tea and/or fresh expresso coffee on a stove. After lunch we paddle back to our access point and return to Coed Obry by 4pm to unload canoes and have tea/coffee.
You will leave having learned some canoe skills and carried out a leisurely canoe journey in this beautiful part of Snowdonia, you will have encountered wildlife along the river and in the wood and have been guided by a canoe guide who is a retired Professor of Physical Geography & Outdoor Education.

Dónde irás

We paddle on the mid-section of the beautiful unspoilt Afon Dwyrhyn, a river around 10-15m wide where we join it. Downstream of where we paddle it becomes tidal and flows into the sea at Porthmadog. We meander through farmland bounded by steep forested slopes. We pass below Plas Tan-y-Bwlch, the Snowdonia National Park study centre, and we’re likely to encounter wildlife along this stretch, buzzards, herons, kingfishers, ducks and geese.

We booked this canoeing adventure to make great memories with our girls. It was our first time to Wales so wanted something different. As a family (2 girls, aged 7 and 10), we absolutely loved it - challenging at times but great fun for them and us. Tim was a super host: knowledgeable and friendly making us feel at ease. Only 10 minutes from Porthmadog so easily accessible. Communication was great too. Would highly recommend. Thank you, Tim for a great day!

Very interesting and exciting experience, Tim helped us a lot when we get in trouble on the river. Lovely lunch and tea break in the middle of this activity. Highly recommended for everyone who want to explore more existing experiences on the river.

Amazing experience on the river with canoes. Learnt a lot about canoeing and the surroundings. Tim was extremely friendly and accommodating and made us feel at ease in the water. It is a great way to spend a day in North Wales! I look forward to booking my next adventure in North Wales with Tim. Would highly recommend booking this adventure with Tim!

We were two families of four, who had a lovely trip with Tim down the river Afon Dwyryd. The introductory briefing was really comprehensive and Tim gave a good description of his qualifications and experience that put any worries I had about the canoe trip to rest. We had a leisurely trip down the river and Tim was able to point out areas of interest and identify different birds. Mid-way there was a stop for lunch and Tim made us a lovely cup of tea while we enjoyed the fantastic scenery before we rowed back. The area we went on the river was nice and shallow so had no worries about falling in - not that any of us did! We had a full day of rowing and it was a lovely way to see such a beautiful part of the country. Make sure you take plenty of photos and try and have a go at using the punt although I am sure it is not as easy as Tim made it look!

We thoroughly enjoyed our canoe trip with Tim. The instructions for meeting Tim were clear and he explained well the plan for parking and unloading the canoes. Tim gave lots of advice regarding technique. He was informative and told us lots about the river and surrounding areas. Thanks Tim for a memorable day!

Canoeing with Tim was brilliant! Tim was very knowledgeable about the local area, wildlife and geography and was very engaging throughout the trip. Tim was also very accommodating and interactive with my younger brother who has Downs. I’d thoroughly recommend the trip to anyone, where with or without kids!
