Qué harás

We meet at 10 am at my woodland, Coed Obry, 1 mile north of Penrhyndeudraeth where there is secure parking. We carry out medical checks and get to know each other, fit buoyancy aids, paddles and put our valuables in dry bags. We then drive 5 mins to the Afon Dwyryd Canoe access point and unload the canoes. After a safety briefing we paddle upstream for 1 ½ hours (the flow is weak), learning canoe techniques: the J-stroke, turning, trim, poling, and sailing.. We encounter wildlife along this stretch, buzzards, herons, kingfishers, Ospreys in Spring/summer, and a variety of ducks and geese. From 13.00-13.45 we get out at a secluded beach or quiet spot on the bank for our packed lunch. You bring your lunch and I’ll make tea and/or fresh expresso coffee on a stove. After lunch we paddle back to our access point and return to Coed Obry by 4pm to unload canoes and have tea/coffee.
You will leave having learned some canoe skills and carried out a leisurely canoe journey in this beautiful part of Snowdonia, you will have encountered wildlife along the river and in the wood and have been guided by a canoe guide who is a retired Professor of Physical Geography & Outdoor Education.

Dónde irás

We paddle on the mid-section of the beautiful unspoilt Afon Dwyrhyn, a river around 10-15m wide where we join it. Downstream of where we paddle it becomes tidal and flows into the sea at Porthmadog. We meander through farmland bounded by steep forested slopes. We pass below Plas Tan-y-Bwlch, the Snowdonia National Park study centre, and we’re likely to encounter wildlife along this stretch, buzzards, herons, kingfishers, ducks and geese.

We - my daughter (aged 13) and I - really enjoyed our canoe trip with Tim. The instructions and directions beforehand were really detailed and easy to follow. Tim provided everything we needed for the day, we were really lucky to have great weather, the scenery was incredible, and Tim obviously knows a lot about outdoor pursuits and about the local area (lots of nice anecdotes and stories about the things we saw).

My 6-year old daughter and I had a brilliant time canoeing on Afon Dwyryd. Tim was great at explaining things and kept us both entertained with facts about the area, wildlife and nature. Overall a really enjoyable experience and we are already planning on coming back next year!

Really beautiful, relaxing, but fun and energetic with outout being tiring. Tim was an excellent host and guide. I'd encourage anyone to do this, you don't have to be an expert, just enjoy the calm.
