Qué harás

We meet at 10 am at my 5 ½ acre woodland, Coed Obry, 1 mile north of Penrhyndeudraeth where there is secure parking. We carry out medical checks and get to know each other over a cup of tea or coffee. We look around the wood at wildlife pond, bird hide, tree platform, campsite and bunkhouse. The bushcraft programme:
• Shelter building using natural materials and/or tarpaulins – hammocks
• Fire lighting techniques: fire wood preparation & build a camp fire
• Lunch - cooked over a camp fire includes sausages, burgers (with meat-free option), flat breads, haloumi, various dips, hot/cold drinks.
• Knife and axe safety, sharpening
• Wood carving: making a mallet; walking stick; tent peg
• Water purification
• Natural cordage (making cord using roots and nettles)
• Foraging: identifying trees/plants in the wood and their uses
You will leave having learned some bushcraft and survival skills in a Welsh woodland. You will have made yourself a souvenir: a mallet, tent peg or walking stick. You will have engaged with the nature and wildlife in this beautiful part of Snowdonia. You will have been guided by a retired University Professor of Physical Geography & Outdoor Education.
Other things to note
This experience is for beginners. You can interact as much or as little as you like. There will be no pressure on you to do any of the activities if you prefer just to learn by watching

In 2016 I bought Coed Obry, a 5 ½ acre Welsh woodland which I am developing as a base for environmental education and bushcraft. I was born and brought up in mid-Wales, I love my country & I have a great appreciation of nature & being outdoors. I hold the Level 2 NCFE Bushcraft, Survival & Wilderness Living Skills Award; current Outdoor First Aid; Level 1 Food Hygiene, & I am a Paddlesports coach, Mountain Leader (summer & winter) & ski teacher. After completing my degree & PhD in Environmental Science, I started my career teaching Geography for the Field Studies Council, then taught Geography in a secondary school before joining Liverpool John Moores University where I worked for 27 years, leading students on the BSc (Hons) Outdoor Education where I taught paddlesports, mountaineering & skiing & have written over 100 scientific papers

Dónde irás

We’ll be based in my own private deciduous woodland which is situated 1 mile north of the village of Penrhyndeudraeth. The wood has its own private driveway and parking area. There is a covered outdoor area (with camp fire and pizza oven) so that we can cook, eat and carry out parts of the course (eg. wood carving; fire lighting) under shelter whatever the weather. The wood is home to a variety of birds, plants & fungi.
