Descripción

Gorgeously decorated and furnished with style and care, Mizpah is a newly renovated chapel in the pretty village of Llanfrynach. In the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, right on the Taff Trail, the village pub is only a stroll away. Ideal for couples and walkers.

The room is highly original, designed to be a peaceful retreat with a woodland theme befitting its view over trees and churchyard. With vintage fittings, hotel grade bedding, Egyptian cotton towels and natural bathroom products.

A unique "woodland" room at Mizpah, a recently renovated chapel in the middle of the village of Llanfrynach, with mountain views, overlooking the churchyard and on the Taff Trail. Replete with retro decor and vintage fittings, with my grandmother's paintings of fairies, trees and the Brecon Beacons scattered throughout, Mizpah is something a little different.

The room is a spacious, private and self-contained room with a bathroom separated by vintage frosted glass sliding doors, with an enamel roll top bath (there's also a separate downstairs loo). The bed is king size, and bedding is hotel grade with Egyptian cotton sheets and a choice of pillows. Tea, both regular and camomile, ground coffee, fresh milk, filtered water and natural bathroom products are provided in the room as well as a hairdryer, iPod dock, wi-fi, TV, DVD player and Sky. I used to travel the world with work and wanted to create the kind of space I was always looking for: cool, comfortable and clean.

The room is designed for couples, but if you would like to bring a baby and have your own travel cot, that is absolutely fine. However, the space is not suitable for toddlers or small children as the stairs are steep.

DVDs, walking books and maps are available for reference and to borrow on the bookshelf on the landing. I have an excellent DVD collection in the sitting room, feel free to plunder if I'm out.

Toast with home-made jam or marmalade and muesli cereal are included in the price for you to help yourself. If you would like a cooked breakfast, and let me know in advance for you to cook for yourselves or I'm happy to do it for you. I can offer, for an additional amount of £7.50 per head, whatever happens to be available during your stay, be it: Muscovado home-cured bacon, home-smoked salmon in beech and gorse, fresh hen and duck eggs from the Powell's smallholding across the way (you'll hear them), free-range sausages and black pudding from Billy George Butcher in Talgarth, fresh baked bread from Brecon WI or home-made veggie mushroom sausages. I am very happy to accommodate all diets with advanced notice.

Guests will have a key and are free to come and go. You are welcome to use the kitchen during the day until 4pm to prepare snacks and make packed lunches, but not full meals and not in the evening without prior arrangement please. Feel free to store items in the fridge and use the dryer for wet clothes.

The sitting room is private as it's my office during the day and where I hang out in the evening.

I'm a friendly sort, here to help with any questions, but I prefer to leave guests to their own devices otherwise as I'm often working.

The pretty and quiet village of Llanfrynach is a stone's throw from Brecon, in the foothills of Pen y Fan with incredible views and a pub. You can walk straight into the mountains from the front door. The Taff Trail passes the chapel, so we are ideal for walkers looking to stop off for a night or two. We are also very well located for exploring the area (see "Getting Around" below).

Local pubs include The White Swan in the village on the opposite side of the churchyard, food is fine if a little “retro”. The best places to eat by far are The Three Horseshoes and The Griffin but get busy so you will need to book. The Star in Talybont is a CAMRA award winning pub. Brecon itself is short on good eateries bar The Brecon Tap for pies and great beer, The Hours Café for super home-cooked cafe food for lunch and breakfast, Llanfaes Dairy for Welsh Italian ice cream (closed winter) and Dugan’s Patisserie for fabulous home-made tarts. Also note that a few places don’t serve Sunday evenings or late, many are closed Mondays, so do call to check.

Parking is free, on the street close by.

Whilst extremely rural, we are very well located. Only a 3 minute drive to Brecon, a 20 minute drive to Llangorse lake, 30 minutes to Hay-On-Wye, 20 to Talgarth, 20 to Crickhowell, 40 to Abergavenny and 35 to the Dan Yr Ogof Caves, 80 minutes to Cardiff and 3.5 hours to London (just over an hour from the Severn Bridge). For walkers, we are a 7 minute drive to Cwmgwdi car park, 20 mins to The Storey Arms and only a mile to the very pretty Monmouthshire-Brecon canal.

Bus 43 from the bus stop opposite the chapel links Brecon (7 mins) to the closest train station, Abergavenny (45 mins), so while having a car is ideal, it is also very possible for non drivers to stay with a little planning of bus and train timetables. NB there are no buses on Sundays.

The police are keen to crack down on drink driving but taxis are easily available.

I have a jumpy rescue cat called Reg who may or may not say hello. Don't be offended if he doesn't, his friendliness to guests appears to be entirely arbitrary.

Sam was a brilliant host, cooked us a brilliant breakfast (worth paying the extra) and was great at communicating with us. Very easy and ideally located for walks in the Brecon Beacons.

My Girlfriend and I escaped to the countryside for NYE and spent 2 nights at Samantha's beautifully designed home. We loved the bedroom (the roll top bath) and all the little personal touches, which made a whopping great difference. Biscuits, chocolate coins, bottle of bubbles and a cloud-like bed were my Top 3. As a host, Samantha was vibrant, welcoming, interesting and incredibly thoughtful and generous. Her cooking is EXCELLENT- an award winning breakfast in our eyes- you must sample for yourselves! We went for a hike on NY's Day after an unexpected, super fun night parting with the locals at the nearby pub. The views would have been incredible if it hadn't been for the rain/sleet/snow and we are looking forward to returning to see Samantha and her wonderful surroundings in the sunshine some time soon! Thank you so much for a top notch stay. Best wishes and Happy 2017 to you xx

My husband and I stayed here while I was in town to run the Brecon Beacons Ultramarathon. It was less than a 10 minute drive from the start, and the course passed right by house. The house has a unique feel. Sam did a great job decorating, and her grandmother's drawings really pull everything together. We also really enjoyed her breakfast; I would definitely recommend getting it at least one morning. The bedroom itself was also equipped with a hot pot, etc. to make tea or coffee.

We had a lovely stay at Samantha's place! She was very warm and welcoming, and extremely helpful when it came to recommendations of things to do in the area. Her house was very charming and the breakfast she cooked was excellent! Would definitely recommend staying here if you're looking for a relaxing holiday in Wales.

Working as a freelance consultant in the film industry, I recently moved to Wales to explore family roots and the mountains, and do a little scribbling. I love to cook and am most famous for my home cured bacon and salmon and home made jam.
