Newport Road is a quiet and friendly street nestled right in the heart of Chorlton.
Chorlton has been home to many artists writers and musicians down the years and up until this very day, indeed, Anthony Burgess, author of Clockwork Orange, said that once you've lived here you'll never want to leave, besides him the likes of writer Quentin Crisp and musicians Niko, Shaun Ryder and Badly Drawn Boy have all been resident.
There is currently a thriving music scene hosted by the many bars with their unique characteristics. There is also a bog standard Wetherspoons along with two little theatres. There are all kinds of shops but Chorlton is especially known for its Vegetarian Vegan and Health food shops and delicatessens, most notably The Unicorn and The Barbakan.
Chorlton contains two town parks, one is just at the end of Newport Road, and a Country park as well as Southern Cemetery immortalised by Morrisey who grew up in nearby Firswood. There is also a picturesque village green overlooked by a historic public house, The Horse and Jockey, which is said to be connected by a secret underground passageway to the old Manor House, now home to the golf club.
The aforementioned passageway is believed to have been constructed to hide priests while Catholicism was outlawed. The old Lords of the Manor, the Barlows of Barlow Hall, were certainly a Catholic family, indeed, Ambrose Barlow himself became a priest but couldn't stay hidden from the authorities forever and so became one of the English Martyrs of the Catholic Church. His skull is now a relic embedded in the walls of Wardley Hall, home to the reigning Bishop of Salford.
Both frequent buses and trams are within five minutes and 10 minutes walking distance. The tram to the city centre takes no more than 15 minutes, the bus about 30 minutes. Old Trafford football ground The Lowry and MediaCityUK are all within a half hour away and from the City centre anywhere in the Greater Manchester conurbation or the stunning countryside which surrounds it, including the Peak District National Park, can easily be reached.
