Ölfusá is popular for sea-trout fishing. Angling for sea trout is permitted in the period between 1 April and 30 September. Two fishing rods are available upon request for guests staying in Móakot and angling is possible anytime during the fishing period.

Birdlife
The owners of the farm have established a private bird conservation area. Birdlife is rich from April, when you witness the arrival of the first migrant birds, until autumn especially during May, June and July. Eider-duck colony of approximately 800 nests is located on a small island in the Ölfusá river estuary. In May and June we collect eiderdown. Ornithologists have for years conducted studies on the estate´s birdlife and in the cottage there is a review of the areas bird life by José A. Alves.  José is a Senior Research Associate at the University of East Anglia developing research in Icelandic waders since 2006 in collaboration with the University of Iceland. His work focuses mostly on the population dynamics of migratory birds and the ability of these species in dealing with ever accelerating environmental change.  In Iceland, the Black-tailed Godwit is the species to which more attention has been dedicated but recent studies with Whimbrels and Oystercatchers are underway. The Flói Bird Reserve is adjacent to the farm.

A walk along the riverbank is an excellent way to enjoy the bird-life.

History
Existing records of Kaldadarnes date from 1200 AD. Before Ölfusá river was bridged the farm serviced the ferry across Ölfusá. The origin of the name “Kaldadarnes” is “Kalladarnes” or the place where you called the ferry. During the middle ages Kaldadarnes was a place of pilgrimage and a wooden cross at the church was believed to have healing powers. During Catholicism in Iceland this was the holiest place in Iceland along with the shrine of Þorlákur. During the Lutheran reform the cross was destroyed and the story says that the bishop responsible died shortly afterwards. During World War II, the British forces built a large military camp and hospital at Kaldaðarnes as well as an airfield which was called RAF Station Kaldadarnes. Only few ruins of the camp exist to day.

Geology
Kaldadarnes is situated on the great Þjórsá lava plain, which was formed around 8,700 years ago. The lava originated from an eruption far inland in the Veiðivötn area and it was the largest post-Ice Age lava flow on earth. The area lies low, only some few meters above sea level. In clear weather there is excellent view of the surrounding mountains and in distance you can e.g. see Mount Hekla and Eyjafjallajökul

For location and distances see the map, e.g. Selfoss 10 km, Reykjavík 60 km and Keflavík airport 100 km.
From road 34 (Eyrarbakkavegur) you turn towards the river, road 316 pointing to Kaldaðarnes (Kaldaðarnesvegur) and follow a gravel road for 6 km
