The Hawk's Nest is an extraordinary home in an incredible location, immersed in nature yet close to downtown & vibrant Riverwest. The Library Room boasts gorgeous views of the MKE River Greenway, a comfortable bed, desk, amoire & private porch access.
I was as surprised as anyone to have purchased this large five-bedroom home last summer, now known as the Hawk's Nest. But, the beauty of the architecture and the incredible location won me over. When living here you feel like you are living in the country but are in fact in the heart of a fantastic city. It is quite extraordinary. To justify the resources needed to keep this place going along with my core value of abundance found in community, I promised myself that I would share the home with a broad array of folks and fill the place with really good people. Its working! We'd love to have you be a part of our community here at the Hawk's Nest!
While we can promise you privacy, the house is open in concept and well-lived-in. It includes:
• A large living room with lots of plants, a frequently used fireplace and a really good sound system
• An attached sizeable kitchen space available for all to use with a communal island, stove, fridge, sink, coffee, dishes, etc.
• Two full bathrooms close to all living spaces
• Laundry in the basement
• An extra comfy TV living area, which is used for reading and computer work more than for the TV
• A board game & jigsaw puzzle area
There are two covered outdoor eating areas: a large back porch with a nice view and a smaller front porch which the hummingbirds frequent in the summer. Our yard has a fire pit, and an expanding garden of vegetable and flowers which flows seamlessly into an 800-acre publicly owned river corridor right out your door! In the spring, summer, and fall when the foliage is up you cannot even tell that you are in the city yet we are within biking distance of most major destinations in Milwaukee, walking distance of the best coffee shop and Mexican restaurant in town and only two blocks from a convenient bus line. The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is close by and Marquette and all the other universities in town are not far. We have extra bikes if you want to get around that way, an inflatable kayak that is fun to haul down to the river and in the winter you can borrow cross country skis and sleds too! The three of us living here know the city and love to share info about our favorite watering holes, hideaways, restaurants, and events.
We actually have quite a few room options for your stay, but haven't listed them all on Airbnb yet. Message us for unlisted options. We always have room for campers and have plenty of couches for people to crash on!
Servicios y zonas comunes
You will have access to the whole house and all of its amenities. The kitchen and bathrooms are shared. Your room will be your own space, we only ask the same for our rooms. Everything else is open to you!
Atención a los huéspedes
This is up to you. The house is big enough that you can keep to yourself in your room, or you are welcome to join us for conversation food and fun when we we are home. We all live busy lives - but when we are around and available, either in person or by phone, we are happy to share and welcome you in as a part of the family. Coffee is available in the morning and don't be surprised if you are invited to join us for a meal. Children of all ages are welcome. There is a play room in the upstairs full of various toys and games from when my kids were younger. Lake Michigan and beach is an easy bike ride away - you MUST watch a sun or moon rise over the lake while you are here!) One thing to note: I occasionally offer the main living area during the day as a retreat site for local non profits, but this is rare and your room is always private.
Otros aspectos destacables
We are on the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. We have few neighbors and try to maintain good relations with them. The Quaker community down the street manages a small park and conservancy all around the house, so it is an easy walk to the river. You can even canoe or kayak from our house into downtown to grab food, etc. - though coming back upstream can be a lot trickier!
We are right near access to the Oak Leaf Trail, a bike path network that connects to many parts of Milwaukee AND reaches out over 100 miles into other parts of Wisconsin. In the winter, sledding hills and snowy parks are not far away.
Basically, just be nice and don't be stupid! This house is a friendly, happy, healthy house. The people who live here are kind, active people. We eat close to the earth, enjoy the occasional bottle of wine and support our local brewery's with light drinking as well. No drugs. No smoking.

Hi - my name is Ken Leinbach, the owner of Hawk's Nest. I share my house with other short term and long term guests. Currently there is Jessica and her 8 year old son Everet. Jessica is a ten year veteran of the Bicycle Federation. Niiboi, a graduate student from Ghana joined us in September. He is studying Mathematics at UWM. There are also two cockatiels, Max and Reilly, who occupy an enclosed mudroom and serve as our greeters and Charlie the Bearded Dragon who, in his large aquarium, guards the top of the stairs on the second floor. We think we have something pretty special here at the Hawk's Nest and we'd like to share it with you.
Originally a science teacher, I now run a very successful nonprofit called the Urban Ecology Center. I'm well known around town as kind of an eco-nut as I bike or unicycle (yes it's true!) everywhere I go and have been a strong advocate for parks and getting folks outside. As such, I was as surprised as anyone to have purchased this large five-bedroom home last summer, but the beauty of the architecture and the incredible location won me over. When living here you feel like you are living in the country but are in fact in the heart of a fantastic city. It is quite extraordinary. To justify the resources needed to keep this place going along with my core value of abundance found in community, I promised myself that I would share the home with a broad array of folks and fill the place with really good people. It's working! That is why we hope you will join us.
