Spectacular views, walks and adventures from this comfortably modernized farm house in a 1-acre hillside garden. On edge of Natural Parques of Sierra Castril and Sierra Cazorla, 4 km from charming town of Castril, a 90 minute day trip to splendours of Granada. To see a short film about the house and its local area, look for 'Castril Cortijo El Villar' on YouTube. Remarkable birdlife, stunning landscapes and outdoor activities on your doorstep.

The house offers 220 square metres and is well suited to sharing with a large family or group of friends. The ground floor has a dining room which seats 8, a living room with log fire and TV and a spacious and we'll- equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave and gas oven. There are also two bedrooms and a bathroom on this floor. Upstairs there are two more bedrooms, a bathroom and a second kitchen and sitting room with another TV.

The house and garden are yours to use. It forms one end of a row of cottages. You have one neighbour, a retired farmer. Next to the house there is a stone terrace with garden furniture and a 'corral' with a barbecue. The garden rises up the hillside, with ledges giving increasingly spectacular views. A wide sunny terrace - cum - path runs across the front of the cottages, then leads on downhill alongside the irrigation stream through fruit and nut trees to a quiet track. This leads down to the lakeside some 300m below.
If you prefer, you can book just one floor of the house (see 'A Perch in Castril' or 'Castril Cortijo: Lakes and Mountains' for details). In this case, you may find yourselves sharing the garden with other guests - but this is a rare event and we would let you know in advance.

We can be contacted by phone or email if you require any advice in English, and we'll do our best in other languages. Carmen, our local housekeeper, will meet you and show you round. She speaks Spanish, as does your sole neighbour, Adolfo, who is very helpful and keeps a spare key. We are happy to help you communicate with either of them if you send us a message.

This is old rural Spain. People are gracious and friendly, and tend not to speak English. You will be greeted by a few people working in the fields as they pass by. If you pause to buy bread or eggs from the farm hamlet of Martin half a kilometre along the lane, you will be warmly welcomed. Otherwise it's quiet enough to hear the birds. Castril is a quaint market town, especially bustling on Fridays, with several bars, simple restaurants and one hotel. People visit for hiking, the scenery and outdoor pursuits. One guest was surprised to find they had to drive a long way to find a fast food chain outlet .... but you won't be.

A car is advisable. Train and bus connections will get you to the A326 within 2km of the house - but you would need time and patience! Roads from a good range of international airports are really good. Road trips to wonderful cities like Granada or Cordoba, or to the Sierra Nevada ski resort, are a scenic pleasure. Shorter outings take you to thermal baths in extraordinary landscapes (Lake Negratin), prehistoric and Arabic sites (Orce and Galera, Benamaurel, Baza), kayaking in the lakes (Bolera), quiet cycling by lakes (San Clemente) or forest streams (Embalse Bolera). Scenic drives abound along white-knuckle mountain roads in Sierra Castril, Sierra Cazorla, and the Mount Sagra area. (The husband says 'exhilarating driving' would be a better description, but each to their own. Hyundai filmed one of their sporty car ads around Lake Bolera.)

There are steep rocky hillsides all around; you will need to keep young children safe. Our wifi connection to the internet is reliable (5Mbps) but mobile phone connection is weak. Climb up the hillside behind the house for a stronger mobile signal, or head towards Castril. There are a medical centre and pharmacy in Castril and the nearest hospital is in Baza, 30 mins drive away. We have mains water and a large (1000 litres)
reserve tank in case the water supply reduces, which has happened; at these times guests should remain comfortable if they use water carefully.

Children are welcome but you would need to bring equipment such as a cot or high chair.
We ask that, if you smoke, you do so outside. The garden has steep rocky edges, so young children need to be supervised.
We have a biological waste system so ask guests to be careful what goes down the loo.
Water shortages sometimes happen. We have a 1000 litre reserve tank which should see you through, but ask you to use water carefully.
We leave basic supplies in the house (our own olive oil, a few spices, detergents, loo rolls, toothpaste and razors...) and you are welcome to use them. It would be kind of you to replace anything that runs out for the next guest's sake.

I divide my time between York, where I have another holiday flat (New Walk Coach House) and lovely Castril. We love walking in the mountains and swimming in the lakes. On our travels, we've come to appreciate the comfort and freedom of holiday homes. That's influenced the way we host this place. It can be used as a 4bedroom house or two smaller apartments, so we have listed three options.
