Hazel cottage is part of a longère (a French farmhouse) and shares a huge garden with an orchard. Set apart from the rest of a small hamlet, it is ideal for those who like to sit and relax in peace and quiet, or those who like to walk through country lanes.
Description of Property
The cottage is the middle part of a 'longère'. The owner’s home is on one side of the cottage, and a barn is on the other.
Completely re-built (with UK-standard wall and roof insulation) by expert craftsman, this 2-bed cottage provides a home from home all the year round. Hazelnut cottage shares the solitude of the large garden with mature fruit and nut trees and far reaching countryside views. Collect blackberries from the hedgerows in July and August (they ripen earlier here). Collect walnuts, hazelnuts, apples and pears from the garden in September and October.
The character cottage features original features retained by the master-builder. There is a Charentais fireplace, a Charentais window, and an ornamental preserved feature - an original sink used by the farmhands dating from 1891. Heating, when you need it, is by electric heaters and a Godin wood-burner, an antique, probably dating from the 1920’s. We provide the wood for you, and help you to light it if you are a novice!
A beautiful 19th century oak staircase sweeps grandly from the open-plan ground floor to the two carpeted double bedrooms upstairs. There are two double bedrooms, each with an en-suite shower. One bedroom has a 5' double bed, the other has 3' twin beds. Each bed has a layer of memory-foam in the mattress, and a thick feather-filled mattress topper. There is a variety of pillows from which you can make your personal choice. Towels, duvets, cotton blankets - and two changes of linen, are provided.
The newly refurbished kitchen has a gas oven, a dish-washer (ample crockery and cutlery will help you to fill it up), a Siemens washing machine, microwave and tall Miele fridge/freezer. A great selection of small appliances are here too, a liquidiser, small food processor, baking tins etc. For weekly guests we provide a selection of washing products, sauces, spices and many small items so that you won’t need to make unnecessary purchases. If there is any items are missing, you can simply borrow from us! We are right next door. Kitchen towel and tea-towels are provided.
The round dining room table can extend when you need more room. You may find that most meals are eaten outside. Sun-shades will be provided. A gas barbecue is available for your exclusive use.
We don’t have a pool, but we do have a large 12-foot plunge-pool which we erect for the scorching months. We maintain the water as if it were a large pool. We can arrange a sunshade to cast a shadow over the pool.
The superb wi-fi in the gîte will enable you to keep in touch with your Internet connections, and there is a good mobile phone signal here too. The TV has a UK Sky Freeview card so you can giggle at the UK weather report, and keep up with your favourite programmes.
There is ample parking space on the pebble drive, right next to the gîte. A seating area is provided at the front of the gîte, on the south side of the house. However, you may also like to sit at the back of the cottage overlooking the large garden, and watch the woodpeckers, the buzzards and many other birds. The patio at the back of the house, and the drive to the house, are covered with smooth pebbles.
There are many country lanes to explore (I will provide you with a local map). You can walk to the river Charente in about 15 minutes.
There are many good restaurants – some near and some farther away. You will be delighted with the quality of the food offered for lunch and evening meals. Many restaurants serve a freshly cooked healthy 3-course lunch starting strictly at 12pm-1pm for £12.50-£15. Most French working people rely on these restaurants and the food is very good. I will provide you with a list (and a map!)
Champagne Mouton is about 30 minutes away, with a 24-hour cash-point, petrol garages and a really nice Carrefour mini-supermarket. There is a farmer's market here twice weekly, and many other markets in near-by villages.
Servicios y zonas comunes
There is only one gîte and the main house, so you will have free-run of the gardens. There is a south-facing patio at the front of the gîte, and a north facing pebble patio offering a cooler option! The garden is huge, with fruit and nut trees, which you can gather in the autumn.
