About Doune

The village of Doune has lots to offer from the historic Doune Castle through to boutique shops as well as Deanston distillery set on the river. There is a great website where you can find out local information and what’s going on in the village. Please visit

Below are some suggested places to visit and activities. The VisitScotland website will give you lots more information, contacts and ideas.

Historic Buildings

Doune Castle: Built in the 14th century, Doune Castle is well worth a visit. Not only does it have one of the best preserved great halls in Scotland it is famous as the backdrop in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Stirling Castle – Stirling Castle is only a few miles from Doune.

Dunblane Cathedral - Close to Doune is the Cathedral City of Dunblane. The cathedral dates back to the 12th century.

Wallace Monument – built in the recent past to celebrate one of Scotland’s hero’s, the Wallace Monument just outside Stirling provides a great viewpoint over the Forth Valley.

Inchmahome Priory – Set in the Lake of Menteith, the 13th century priory is a wonderful place to visit. Take the small boat out to the island where Mary Queen of Scots sought refuge. Nearby restaurant and pub overlooks the only lake (not a loch) in Scotland.
Attractions:

Deanston Distillery: The distillery (just over the river in the adjoining village of Deanston) welcomes visitors.

Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park: Only a mile and a half from Doune, the Safari park offers a great day out for families. It includes a variety of attractions and will entertain the kids for the whole day.

Brairlands Farm: In the summer months Briarlands Farm opens its doors to the public. It has a farm shop with home grown soft fruits and local produce combined with an adventure playground aimed at younger children. Another good day out for the family. It is only 2 miles from Doune (follow the signs for the Safari Park)

Argaty Red Kites: Again, only a mile and a half from Doune there is the Argaty

Outdoor Activities

In Doune, you are on the doorstep of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. There are a huge number of activities. If you want an active holiday there is walking, climbing, cycling (road or mountain bike), water sports (sailing, canoeing, etc), shooting, fishing, golf and much, much more to chose from.

The nearby locations include the Lochs (for example Loch Vennacar, Loch Ard, Loch Katrine and Loch Lubnaig). Loch Lomond is not too far either.

For walkers there are several Forestry Commission and National Park marked walking routes combined with a wide variety of hill walking.

It is a great place for mountain biking at all levels. There are a number of flat cycle paths (e.g. Doune to Dunblane railway line or the Callander to Strathyre cycle route along the disused railway line) and there are more challenging routes like the Carron Valley Mountain Bike trails.

For golfers the local clubs welcome visitors (Dunblane New Golf Course and Callander). Only 20 minutes will also take you to Gleneagles where you can enjoy the championship courses.

For the fishing enthusiasts there is salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Forth and the River Teith. There is good trout fishing too and permits are available locally and from Stirling Council.
