3bedroom/2bath historic shingle house with antiques. Built in 1928 above scenic Silverado Trail, the historic home offers privacy above Napa River in oak woodlands. 0.9 mile walk/bike down a vinyard-lined road to historic St. Helena.

El alojamiento

We named the house "Preservation House" because our focus has been to restore rather than modernize or remodel, both inside and out. Except for upgrades important for safety, like electrical service, kitchen ventilation, and fire protection, keeping the house's historic and authentic features is our goal. The house is 1,400 square feet and centers around an open livingroom-diningroom space with historic knotty pine walls and ceilings, in the tradition of a 1928 lodge. A large hearth with a woodburning stove adds to the cozy, intimate feeling of the livingroom, and both rooms are furnished with a mix of comfortable contemporary seating and period antiques and artwork. The woodburning stove is NOT operable because of fire restrictions in Napa Valley. We have cable internet, Roku-box viewing but not cable tv. WiFi is also provided. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and historic gas stove that works beautifully (no microwave). A covered porch off the kitchen is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee (i.e. Peet's coffee provided) and as a place to unwind in the evening. In the vernacular Italian building tradition, the house's downstairs bathroom is accessible through the covered outdoor porch rather than through an interior entrance; it's a utilitarian, full bathroom. According to a historian of vernacular architecture, Arne Alanen, Prof. Emeritus, U. of Wisc., many Italians thought it was unsanitary for a bathroom to open into the first story kitchen and living spaces directly. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs bathroom have a shower and the upstairs bathroom also has a tub. As throughout the house, the bathrooms feature authentic historic elements rather than remodelled features.
The house has three bedrooms with large operable windows, some with screens. There are box fans in each bedroom but no air conditioning. One bedroom has a king-sized, another has a queen-size, and the third bedroom has two twin-size beds. Upstairs there are softwood floors and an exterior entrance from the upstairs landing to the oak woodlands behind the house. Although we try to abate poison oak on the property, it is a native plant. Please be cautious of poison oak on the property.

Servicios y zonas comunes

It would be hard to find a property in Napa Valley more centrally located to the very best wineries, historic downtowns (i.e. St. Helena & Calistoga), or more bike-accessible than this property. Silverado Trail is the backbone connecting the finest wineries in the Valley and has continuous bike lanes. The house has the privacy of oak woodlands and vinyards, the Napa River Wildlife Refuge and historic Pratt Ave. Bridge while still being a quick walk, bike, or drive into historic downtown St. Helena - (website hidden)
There are great bike rental options in St. Helena.

Downstairs stays cool if you leave the doors and windows closed in the summer. Upstairs box fans will help to cool the bedrooms, especially after sunset.

La hora de llegada es a partir de las 16:00

1. NO SMOKING (outside PLEASE do not dispose of any cigarette butts outside as the area has high wildfire danger)
2. Totally housebroken dogs are welcome! However, dogs cannot be left at the house when you are not there. You must take them with you. Also, dogs that are not housebroken or who chew on furnishings are not welcome.
3. Well behaved and closely supervised children are very welcome. The house does have many antiques and breakable items. The property has poison oak and Silverado Trail itself poses a hazard for unsupervised children. We are parents and love kids but this is not a great place for young kids without close supervision.
4. Show extra caution as you exit the driveway onto Silverado Trail or turn on or off of the historic Pratt Ave. bridge. The curve in the road requires extra caution.
5. The varnished woodwork, historic rugs, and other antiques are unique. We are grateful for your care.
6. Please use the provided coasters for your drinks (of course, wine glasses, other glasses, and mugs are provided).
7. Please leave the house locked up with two lights left on, per instructions that you will find at the house.

Very nice rustic traditional house in the heart of Napa. The owners keep it clean and comfortable. Most importantly, the owners are extremely good at getting back to you via email or messaging for any questions or issues.

The host provided us with a bottle of wine, juice and some breakfast which was really nice. The listing isn't the fanciest in the area but we had a good stay.

Exactly as advertised. Very cozy and charming. Amazing central location in Napa valley. 5-10 minutes to dozens of world-class wineries. Great, easy to deal with hosts. Will definitely book again in the future.

Edward and Yvonne were extremely hospitable hosts - friendly, communicative, responsive, and set us up with great breakfast. Since we were staying for about 9 nights, they even did a linen change and kitchen re-stock for us halfway through our trip, which was great! The house is well-located to St Helena and other parts of Napa Valley, easy to find. To say the house has a unique character would be a serious understatement - the furnishings, art, and house itself are an interesting combination you're not likely to find anywhere else. It has a bit of a cabin retreat feel to it. We arrived after dark and a few of my colleagues were a little freaked out by the combination of dark wood, dim lighting as bulbs warmed up, and some of the artwork, but no ghosts were observed and in the daytime with the curtains open the place has very nice light. I think our only real complaint would be the road noise - it is right on a busy road that doesn't really quiet down until about 10 PM and picks up again around 5 AM. It bothered me the first night, though I slept quite well the second night, so it may just take getting use to - but if you're the kind of person that just can't deal with that, this might not be the AirBnB for you. But it is great value for the number of people it can sleep, and you can't beat the location!

I could not have asked for a better experience staying at Edward and Yvonne's place. Their communication was EXCELLENT and they were so flexible with check in/ check out times. The location is absolutely perfect for wine tasting up in the northern Napa Valley. The house itself was wonderful. It was clean, much bigger than I expected, fully stocked with towels/blankets/coffee/soaps...etc AND the fridge was even stocked with bread, eggs, butter, coconut water and creamer. THANK YOU Edward and Yvonne for exceeding my expectations :)

Yvonne and I have four "children" between that ages of 22 and 15. We live between San Francisco and Saint Helena, California. I'm an architectural historian and we both are dedicated to keep the authentic historic character of our home intact and well maintained. The ceiling and walls of the living and dining rooms are lined with 1928 knotty-pine and Persian rugs, lending the house a warm place to cozy up with family and friends after a day in the beautiful Napa Valley.

The house is set at the edge of an oak forest along the wine country's most scenic route, Silverado Trail, and across from the Napa River and from the greatest wineries in the US. It's a scenic walk (about 2 km) down a vinyard-lined road to the lively and lovely historic Main St. of St. Helena, Beringer Winery, and the California Culinary Institute just to name a few great destinations. I speak German and French and Yvonne speaks some Finnish and Spanish. Native San Franciscans, we'll gladly do what we can to steer guests to the amazing places in the greater Bay Area and beyond.
