Descripción

This beautifully renovated 1925 schoolhouse has breathtaking views of the peak of White Top, Virginia's second highest mountain. Near the Virginia Creeper Trail, The AT, zip lining and more, this is a true mountain retreat.

Our family ties go back over 100 years, and in 1925 we donated the land to the county upon which the first school in Green Cove was built. Purchased back from the county in the 1950's and passed down, it has been our family retreat since 1985, when it was originally renovated by Bernard and Bonnie Hurley, and now their daughter Darlene and her husband David will be your hosts.

The great room features a large stone fireplace, a full kitchen, and a lovely bay window that perfectly frames the peak of White Top Mountain. It affords six comfortably in the three bedrooms, one queen, one King, and one with two twin beds, cots are available for two additional guests, which can be set up in a semi-private front room separated from the living room by French doors. Beautiful gardens and cool summer breezes on your choice of two porches give you plenty or room to spread out. The croquet court is always a fun way to bring out a little competition. Then cozy nights together by the soapstone wood stove are sure to make you never want to leave.
And since winter is a wonderful time to be here as well we will be adding an automatic generator in 2017 to ensure your visit goes smoothy in the event of power outage during your stay.

Full kitchen
Satellite TV
Wifi
All linens provided
3 bedrooms (cots will be provided for more than 6 guests)
Croquet court
Two porches with lots of sitting room

Darlene or David will meet you to give you the keys a quick tour and answer any questions you may have. They will be staying in a separate, private living space in the home during your stay. All the entrances to the rental area are private, and while there are doors that connect the two spaces, each have locks on both sides, and all the bedrooms have locks for your security and theirs. That being said, we are just a knock on the door or ring on the doorbell away from helping in any way they can. In the event we need to go out you will provided with phone numbers so you can call or text us if needed.

Located in the heart of The Jefferson National Forest, we are just a mile from the Virginia Creeper Trail, a couple miles from the Appalachian Trail, and a short drive to many beautiful parks, a zip line, and stocked trout streams. We are about a 20 minute drive to the town of Damascus, where there are several shuttle services if you want to bike down the Creeper Trail. You can catch a show at the Barter Theater in Abingdon or a bluegrass concert at one of The Crooked Road venues, see what the many artists in the area are making, or dine in award winning restaurants throughout the area. Bristol is just an hour away, so it's a perfect place to stay on race weekend!

If you are flying in to see us, you will need to rent a car, as the remote location is one of our charms.

There are shuttle and bike rental services in Damascus, about a 20 minute drive from the inn. We are just a mile from the Creeper Trail, and the junction is three miles from the drop off point for the shuttles, so riding down on your own bike and catching a shuttle up is a great option.

We are pet friendly, and have several people friendly pets of our own.
Supervision is a must, there are lots of wide open spaces and wildlife.

The home was actually much larger than we expected! While Green Cove is one of the highlights of the VA Creeper Trail, it was still a bit of a scenic drive to the town of Damascus, but that added to the appeal as well. So quiet, so peaceful - we loved it and so did our four-legged family members!!! The host family was there at the attached residence and were there to assure that our questions, if any, were answered and to make sure that we felt completely at home. Stocked wood for the fireplaces made the residence quite cozy and warm! Everything made us feel like we were completely at home. We will definitely reserve that location again!

My friends and I stayed at the The Schoolhouse for a quick weekend. We didn't get to enjoy the house as much as we would have liked due to our activities and short stay. The house was very clean and the beds were comfy. The description delivered on the star gazing. The stars were AMAZING!!! Everyone with the Air bnb was very friendly and helpful. If I am ever back in the area I will definitely stay there again.

The Schoolhouse @ Green Cove was perfect for us and our dogs. First we noticed how cute it is from the outside then it's spaciousness. It also had a wonderful feel to it with lots of great published locally themed artwork by one of the host. There is history there but it doesn't feel old and tired due to some recent renovations. The furnishings are very very comfortable, including the beds. The kitchen and bathroom are well stocked, they had stainless cookware, yummy smelling hand soaps & the best bath tissue. My husband met Bernard and Bonnie, our host, the first night and he said they were charming. I didn't see or hear a peep out of them but I met their extremely sweet and gentle dog while out on the property. I loved the view, walking areas, proximity to Grayson State Park, proximity to the Virginia Creeper and it's quietness. I highly recommend this lovely stay.

The school house was a great place to stay. Clean, spacious, and great views are only a few of its virtues. We got to see deer every evening which only added to the ambience. I would recommend this place for anybody wishing to stay in the Damascus area

Gave good directions in advance since there is no cell reception up there. It was a stunning setting, I wish we had more time to stay there. Neat pictures of when it was a school house. Very comfortable. A little musty, but it is an old building. Very spacious, plenty of room for the little kids with us to run around.

Our family has been a part of the community in Green Cove, Virginia for well over 100 years. Darlene and David Crank will be your hosts during your stay, your initial contact through Airbnb will be with either Darlene or their daughter Gwynne Virts.

Darlene and David are taking over the Schoolhouse from her parents, if you have stayed with us before you know Bernard and Bonnie. You might still see them here as well, they are just taking more time to enjoy their retirement.

Bernard worked for The Washington Post as a typesetter and Bonnie is an artist, who together raised five children in the home Bernard built in Northern Va. When they retired in the mid 1980's, they turned their eyes to restoring what was one of the first schools in Green Cove, Va. With hard work and lots of help from our tight knit family, they turned a four room school house into a home filled with wonderful craftsmanship and art made by Bonnie and many others that make up the diverse artist community in the surrounding areas. Every room has paintings, stained glass, weavings, blown glass, photographs, and pottery. In the mid 1990's they decided to open their home and have been hosting guests ever since.

David and Darlene purchased the "schoolhouse" as we always called it from her parents in 2014 and have been assisting with the rentals part time until 2017. We are now thrilled to be here full time and love riding the Creeper Trail, hiking and most recently zip lining and looking to find all the other fun and interesting things the area offers.
We are also thrilled that our family is also migrating to the area and will be assisting with their vacation rentals as well and will be able to help with arrangements for larger groups as well.

We love to share what we know about the area and are happy to assist with any questions you have but also don't want to intrude on your vacation so please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or problems.

We are pet friendly and have our own pets on the premises.
