Józsefváros is one of central and historical districs of Budapest. About 80% of it's buildings are under protection of UNESCO. The whole district is now being renovated, starting from the city center.
The innermost, central part includes several remarkable spots, such as the National Museum, and the central buildings of the Eötvös Loránd University, the Semmelweis University, the Academy of Drama and Film, and the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. The Piarist Secondary School, the main building of the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church, and the Law Faculty of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University are also situated here. This part is called "Palace Quarter", out of which one can still see Wenckheim Palace, hosting the Metropolitan Library.
Népszínház street itself, at which the flat is located, is also being renovated, still in progress. At the moment it looks a bit shabby and dark at night - but is absolutely safe because of cameras at each corner.
In 5 minutes walk you can find the beautiful II. Janos Pal papa (Pope John-Paul the Second) square, several interesting food shops, bakeries and a local marketplace at Teleki Laslo square.
About 10 minutes walk you can find the Keleti station (a large public transport hub) and the beatiful Rozhak (Roses) square with St. Elisabeth temple.

I have been living in Budapest for several years and despite this sometimes I am the same tourist as my guests. I am constantly looking for new places because all the unusual, interesting places and beautiful views can be found quite unexpectedly. The city is changing much faster than one can imagine. Unfortunatelly, not every places can be found in the web. If you want to visit local festivals, ask me: from April to October they are held every weekend.
