Charmouth is a charming village right on the Juassic coast featuring Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast, which has wild & wonderful walks in and around the Dorset village of Charmouth. Charmouth is at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. One mile to the east of the Regency town of Lyme Regis, Charmouth has its own distinct identity and is renowned worldwide for its fossil beaches and famous museum. The village has traditional pubs, shops, post office, chemist and playing fields and eateries.
It's not just the fossils that make Charmouth such an attractive holiday destination. The beach is safe for children of all ages as it shelves very gently and low tide reveals wide expanses of sand and many rock pools. Away from beach there are spectacular cliff and inland walks and a centuries old landscape of meadows and hedge rose surrounding the village.
For the more leisurely walkers or picnickers, the rolling Devon countryside & Trinity Hill make the perfect setting for an afternoon stroll. Or just pop down to the beach to find yourself a fossil. A stones throw away is Lyme Regis; one of the Jurassic Coasts most famous coastal towns, boasting a micro-brewery, the Marine Theatre & the setting for River Cottage's fishing trips, from the world's famous Cobb Harbor. The rugged coastline is magnificent & has been awarded World Heritage Site status, just the most magical setting.
Our recommendations for Restaurants and Pubs
Charmouth Fish and chips is seriously good anytime.
Great for Sunday Lunch, The Harbour Inn on the front in Lyme Regis, amazing roast beef. Best for breakfast, the small cafe next door to the Harbour Inn, they even do a Mexican style breakfast! The kitchen In The Symonsbury Estate ( Stunning walks and breathtaking views from Colmers hill and Hell lane, recently featured on Julia Bradbury Tv documentary)
The Hive Cafe at Burton Bradstock are great for breakfast and lunch ...where you can also eat Oysters and Lobsters in the evening, its location is right on the beach and has everything you could wish for.
Also the famous Hix cafe if you like sea food., based again in Lyme Regis ( less than ten minutes in the car from us ) Lyme have a new Vegetarian restaurant called Tierra kitchen, which has fantastic food.
The anchor Pub in Seatown is a great choice, The lovely walk over Stone Barrow to get there, also provides sunning views of the coast.
English wine is highly under-rated, take a tour of Furleigh Estate& if you are not already, you will be converted. This is home to some of the country's best red, white, pink & sparkling.
The hustle & bustle of nearby market towns of Bridport & Honiton will totally overwhelm your senses. On a Saturday, the market is brimming with vintage, retro & antiques & all the cheeky dealers that are coming down from London to grab themselves a bargain... if you are a keen haggler this is the place to be. NB. Make sure you pop down to see Sharon at Old Albion, an absolute gem in this vintage paradise!
If you are here during the right time of year & prefer to take making wine & spirits into your own hands, you can head out on your own foraging for elderberries, damsons & sloes or take a guided foraging tour.
For the more adventurous, there are plenty of watersports to be had in Lyme Regis & West Bay, paddle boarding, swimming, surfing, kiteboarding, ribbing, sailing & deep sea fishing
Buses are frequently available to go to Lyme Regis as well as all the towns and villages locally
