The Blackberry Cottage exudes warmth and comfort in a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom package that can comfortably sleep up to 4. Stay inside or venture out onto the covered deck to cook up some steaks on the gas grill or just sip your favorite beverage. You're within 10 to 15 minutes of the Magnolia Silos and Baylor or, you are less than two minutes from Waco's number-one-rated eatery, Cafe Homestead. So, whether you are looking for a ricochet point or a place to dig in and rest, you'll find it here.
The Blackberry Cottage is well named. It overlooks a working blackberry vineyard whose fruit is used for jams and jellies at the nearby Homestead Heritage. We built this cottage for "Cozy." It has warm tones and most of the lights are on dimmers so you can create the atmosphere you want. There's a wonderful kingsize bed and the sofa makes down into a queen bed. Even the sofa's mattress is way better than the typical sofa mattress.
HEATING AND COOLING
...all handled with a quiet central mini-split A/C and heat pump that you control. It can get pretty hot here in the summer but your cottage is foam insulated and the air conditioner is sized to overcome whatever is going on outside. Unobtrusive comfort is what we're after. Hope you like it.
The Blackberry Cottage has a large deck that looks out over the blackberry vineyard and our chickens. The propane grill is great for cooking out and there is a table and chairs for four. It seems there is always something going on on the deck--humming birds, squirrels, painted buntings, chickadees, cardinals--depending on when you come. We'll put a "Birds of Texas" book in the cottage so you can identify everything if you're interested.
More than just a "kitchenette," you have a small gas stove and oven to cook your masterpiece, double sink and microwave. So, if you're the cooking type, you're good to go--from turkeys or roasts to birthday cakes!
Behind the barn door is a huge shower that's powered by a water heater that never runs out of hot water. So, if a long shower is your way of pampering yourself, this is your dream-space. We hope you'll love the antique lavatory and the copper vessel sink. Look inside. If you forgot your toothbrush, we have a replacement for you.
Whether you are sitting on the sofa or lying on the bed, you can open (or raise) the blinds to look out on the ever-present wildlife on the deck or look past that to the fading sun. Or, close the blinds and enjoy seclusion.
THINGS TO DO/SEE
Most of our guest come for Magnolia or Baylor. But, because you are so close to Homestead Heritage, most guests "discover" a place they love but didn't know was here. If you go to Homestead Heritage to eat, be sure to allow time to walk around their craft shops. You can watch craftsmen make baskets, throw pottery, forge architectural pieces, make heirloom furniture with hand tools or make a dress from cotton they have planted, raised, carded, spun and woven (seriously!). My favorite shop is their newest, the Basket Shop. You can find beautiful baskets made from pine needles harvested locally (semi-locally?) and, if you want to learn how they do it, they'll teach you.

Doug and Donna, live on the same property in a completely separate house. Otherwise check out the blackberry vineyard, the chicken tractors, whatever. Our land has another vacation rental (the Forest Cottage) but you are visually isolated from each other.

Donna and I have been happily married for over 45 years and it seems like it just keeps getting better and better. She's a homemaker and my day job is as a web designer. We have three grown kids that all live within a couple of miles.
We've just started in the vacation rental business and it keeps both of us hoping to get more landscaping done now that we've finished the cottages. It's a supplement to our retirement but the real pay from owning these vacation rentals is reading your comments and feedback in the Guestbook. The guests we have had have all been absolutely wonderful.
We had another company managing the property until recently but decided to take it back because we felt distanced from everything except washing sheets and towels. So, as mentioned elsewhere, we will protect your privacy but we want to at least meet you--even if it is just to say, "You're Welcome Here."
