"Restored Finca with Mediterranean courtyard"

Taking the Moscari road out of Campanet, the road narrows briefly as it circumnavigates a bend after a little over 1 km and almost hidden in the wall, the double gates of Villa Campanet Vell open into a driveway that sweeps around to the courtyard entrance and inspiring views of the Tramuntana Mountains. This courtyard, an enchanting introduction to the centuries old Finca is bordered on three sides by covered outbuildings and the Finca itself. A tall, neatly clipped hedge almost completes the fourth side, making for total privacy and this erstwhile working farm yard has been transformed into a pretty garden of rooms, planted with flowering shrubs and trees, with a beautifully tiled roman step entry pool (depth 0.9m - 2.10m), surrounded by paved terraces.

The open plan living room of the Finca itself opens directly from the courtyard, where a sofa and chairs are arranged around a fireplace and brightly whitewashed walls are hung with a host of artefacts from days gone by. A dining table and chairs are close to the doorway to the farmhouse kitchen, well equipped with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and micro-wave with, at the far end, a second door returning to the courtyard and a covered terrace, furnished for outside dining and with a purpose built barbecue close by. Just across the courtyard garden is a barn now used for drying washing out of the sun and there is a washing machine in a separate building.

A tiled hallway leads from the living area to a twin bedroom on the ground floor, with window to the rear courtyard, and a double bedroom with antique furnishings, which faces the road. There is also a full bathroom on this floor. A door leads to the aforementioned small courtyard with gated steps down to the road and a gate to the neighbouring villa, S’Alqueria, ideal for two families who would like to holiday close to each other, whilst remaining totally private.

Back inside, a traditionally tiled stairway leads a twin bedroom, where thick walls and a tiny window with views towards the mountains help keep the temperatures down inside when temperatures rise outdoors. There is also a shower room on the first floor.

In the warm Mallorcan summer, the courtyard becomes the main living space and various rooms have been formed to suit differing moods, with shady corners, sunbathing terraces and a couple of seats in the cool old entrance barn which catches the occasional breeze and makes this an appealing spot to disappear to, with a good book.

As this lovely old Finca has its back turned to the little used Moscari Road, the occasional car will be heard.

Campanet & Buger, Mallorca

Situated on the edge of the green and wooded foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, the village of Campanets one claim to fame is its amazing limestone caves, said to house the longest stalactite in the world! It also makes a good starting point for an exhilarating drive to the mountain top Monastry at Lluc via the picturesque village of Caimari.

Campanet has no less than three bakeries, as well as a well-stocked supermarket and a delicatessen. The sunny church square has a number of simple bars and small shops and its a pleasant spot to linger over a morning coffee and sugary ensaimada before heading off for the day. Of an evening there are also two or three bars that serve authentic tapas or simple meals, but the village has surprisingly remained a peaceful backwater, virtually untouched by tourism.

Perched twin like atop a neighbouring hill and just 5 mins drive away, Buger (pronounced Boohair) is Mallorcas smallest municipality and holiday accommodation is still rare. Having received enthusiastic feedback about this drowsy little town from customers staying nearby, we were delighted to be offered a house on the outskirts. In the shady streets surrounding its magnificent church, life continues at a measured pace, much as it was before Mallorca became a holiday destination but a bank, post office, a small weekly market, minimarket, three simple caf/bars, a popular weekend restaurant with a pretty terrace and an excellent baker provide the necessities of life.

Old Pollena with a good choice of shops and restaurants is no more than a 15 minute drive. However for a truly memorable occasion, book a table at a small hotel in the nearby village of Binibona where gourmet food is served on a candlelit terrace. If you dont want to drink and drive theres even a local taxi.

For serious shoppers, the town of Inca, famous for its leather goods and with some excellent cellar resaturants, is a 10 minutes drive and from here or, even nearer Sa Pobla, you can also catch a train to Palma.

The nearest beaches at Puerto Pollenca or Alcudia are approx. 20 minutes drive.

Staying at Villa Campanet Vell was a lovely experience of authentic rural Mallorca. The Villa was furnished simply and immaculately clean. Peaceful location and stunning views of the mountain range, our family had a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

The villa was absoloutely beautiful and we had a fantastic week there. It is located just outside of Campanet, you could walk but we usually drove in as parking is quite easy. The villa itself had everything we needed and we spent a lot of time in the garden which is beautifully kept. Our son loved the pool and it was lovely to cool off for the adults too. Campanet is a lovely quiet little town, there are a few supermarkets, a bakers, pharmacy and several bar/restaurants so enough options if you don't want to stray to far. The motorway is a short drive and it's easy to access nearby towns which we did on several occasions. The Freelance Holiday team were great, very comprehensive instructions and directions and they were extremely responsive to any queries. Sanjeev who is based locally couldn't have been more helpful. We'll hopefully return!

The Freelance Holiday Team were excellent to deal with, very prompt and the directions from the airport were perfect, we found the villa no problem. The Villa itself was impeccably clean on arrival. We basically lived outside. The courtyard is beautiful and private and the pool was excellent. Inside the villa has everything that you could need. The small town of Campanet, is very close by, (walking distance, although we didn't due to heat) and has everything you need a bakers and 3 small supermarkets for supplies and 3 or 4 small bars for food and drinks. It is not a tourist hotspot and mostly you only hear spanish voices. If you you want peace and calm then this is the place for you. As a previous reviewer has said some cars do peep their horns as the villa is on a blind bend (behind a very high wall), however this isn't a big deal and doesn't happen at night.

We loved staying in this charming house. Perfect for 6 persons travelling together. The pictures are very promising, but in real life the house is even bigger and more beautiful. The terrace is cozy and warm - with palm trees, cactusses, a lemon tree and lots of plants. We ate breakfast in one place, and dinner in another - lots of possibilities to eat outside in the sun or in shadow. The pool was great for both adults and our four children (age 8-12), because of the varying depths. A pool man came to clean it half throught the week. The location is really good. Once you have passed the narrow streets of Campanet, you find the house surrounded by olive and fruit trees and fields with sheep. But just 5 minutes drive takes you to the motorway, which makes it very easy for you to go to all the corners of the island. The stone house is definitely built for warm summers. The windows are small with shutters to keep the warm out. Therefore it gets quite chilly inside in the evening if you don't turn on the heat (in April anyway). If you have a sensitive ear, you might want to bring earplugs, as some of the cars passing use the horn because of the narrow path. We got used to it after a day or two. We can really recommend this house and hope to come back one day.

Hi, our names are Diane (rear left) Paul (rear right) Chris C (front left) & Chris L (front right) together we are the team at Freelance Holidays: We've been in the villa rental business since 1984, and are still going strong.

Since 1984 we have been keen as mustard about seeking and offering the best villa rentals in the best locations. In the beginning these were simple village houses and studios in Crete, and some villas in Mallorca. over the years we have added more choices of Mediterranean islands where we have sourced some great villas. Tastes have changed and we are now able to offer some fantastic villas, each with something special and different from the mass market operators usual selection. We have continued to keep our roots and proudly continue to offer typical village accommodation
