A Henry David Thoreau experience! A log cabin, deep in the woods, no electric, no running water, no central heat, no toilet. No noise, no traffic. Just a whole lot of nothing... Just peace and quiet to think, to write, to feel more alive.

El alojamiento

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately...”
― Henry David Thoreau

A unique hand made log cabin, deep in the woods yet only 90 miles from New York City. You get to "fetch" your water from the pond. Heat yourself with the wood stove. Light your way with a candle. Yes, you are back in time. You are close to nature. You are on your own!

PS. If you choose not to ruff it. There is electric lights, a hot plate, a mini fridge and a heater. (What next? Wifi, cable TV, streetlights and traffic...)

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”
― Henry David Thoreau

Servicios y zonas comunes

In fair weather access is "driveable" to the cabin via a dirt road. In winter... If you have a 4-wheel drive or Subaru you can drive into the site. Snow shoes or cross country skies recommended for heavy snow conditions. In winter please call to confirm our local conditions.

Atención a los huéspedes

This a special place for very special people. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Cell service is not available from the cabin (AT&T works sometimes).

Otros aspectos destacables

Just remember you are going to be on your own. Dress for the season and weather condition. Bring extra clothes that may get wet. There is a wood stove for heat while you are in the cabin feeding the wood.

Be mindful of your surroundings. Carry out any trash with you. Have fires only in the designated fire pits. And have a good time.

Remember that you are in the woods, about half a mile from the nearest road. So plan your supplies carefully. There is civilization a few miles away, even a Walmart.

A Special Note for City Folk:
You share the woods with wild animals, (lions, tigers and bears...Oh My! skunks, bees and spiders too), don't eat yellow snow and don't get lost in the woods...

“Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”
― Henry David Thoreau

A special note:
There are two cabins in the area about 100 yards from each other in the woods. If both have visitors you may bump into each other in the hundreds of acres surrounding the cabins. The cabins also share the hot tub located between them in the woods. If you want to be assured total privacy you may want to book both cabins.

We loved staying in the cabin and really enjoyed our stay. It rained the first night we were there so we had to make a trip to buy wood. I'd suggest bringing extra firewood and looking up the closest Wal-Mart ahead of time! The cabin is cozy and secluded with a dock right outside the cabin. Definitly will book again!

We had a great stay at the cabin. We came up for labor day weekend with our dog. The weekend turned out to be quite rainy. We brought plenty to do and just relaxed in the cabin and explored the surrounding area. We went up to Sam's Point,(about 50 min away) but just made it to the lookout before it started raining heavily. Would love to go back to see the ice caves and waterfall. We also checked out Bashakill Vineyard (about 30 min away), which was beautiful and dog friendly! Our last day there we took the kayaks out on a quick trip around the lake and had a great time. It was just what we needed. Even though there were guests in the other cabin, we only saw them once. With all the rain, we didn't get a chance to use the hot tub, but we did hear it running! The small cabin felt very secluded, yet it was still only a short drive to town for food and drinks. We did have a lot of rain and there was some dampness in the carpet of the cabin. Other than that, it was a wonderful stay! Also, be sure to pack light, as the cabin is small!

What a special place. Truly a gem for those wanting to escape the city for some quiet. The perfect amount of roughing it with the comforts of home. Will definitely be back.

Walden was the perfect little getaway for my dogs and I. The cabin has everything you need and the town of Monticello is close enough if you need supplies or want to venture outside of the beautiful property.

John's place is fantastic. Would absolutely stay again. There is electricity and a mini-fridge. Location is great and so much to do if you enjoy the outdoors. Jacuzzi was a nice touch!

Johns place was amazing! I came here with my boyfriend and my dog and we all loved it. Beautiful cabin in the woods right on the water and there was even kayaks ready to be used with life jackets and all. The cabin is small so it's more for couples or very close friends. The outhouse bathroom had some spiders in it but what do you expect for an outhouse in the woods. All in all John was an unbelievable host he was very helpful and understanding especially since we booked this the day of our arrival. I will definitely be returning again. Thank you John! :)

The cabin was incredible! The pictures are stunning but they don't do it justice. It was the perfect weekend place. John was very accommodating, flexible and communicative. Will 100% recommend to our friends and go back! Many times over! Thanks, John!
