FOOD AND DRINK
The Grove Inn, a few steps away from Huxleigh Cottage, is a wonderful old village pub, said to have been frequented by authors Henry Williamson, the author of Tarka the Otter, and R.D Blackmore famous for the Exmoor based story of Lorna Doone. Robert, who runs the pub with his wife Deborah, is very friendly and knowledgable about the area. There are wood fires in both bar and restaurant and is the ideal spot to settle in with the locals for a traditional Devon supper or local beverage at the end of a long day out in the countryside. You can meet more of the local community and buy their produce at several traditional weekly markets in the surrounding towns. South Molton (Thursdays and Saturdays) still has a cattle market in the centre of the town where you can buy local fish from Dan The Fish Man; Barnstaple ( Fridays) in the grade 2 listed Pannier Market and the small town of Chulmleigh - your closest town - has a good variety of shops, including a baker, butcher, delicatessen, several pubs and restaurants. There are lots of country pubs in the area, most of which serve both pub lunches and full lunch and dinner menus: The Bell Inn at Chittlehampton, The Red Lion in Chulmleigh and the (recently rethatched) Kings Arms in Winkleigh. The Rising Sun, by the river Taw at Umberleigh, is a famous fishing pub with an excellent and inexpensive menu and a good place to talk 'fishing'. For an authentic Exmoor experience try The London Inn at Molland, The Sportsmans Inn or the Royal Oak at Withypool. There is fine dining available at the the Michelin Star Masons Arms which serves both pub lunches and full lunch and dinner menus with modern take on British and French classics, and for restaurants with a country house setting you can try the nearby High Bullen Golf and Country Club or the 18th century Northcott Manor.

GETTING OUTSIDE
When night falls, the darkness in Exmoor is "absolute"
"In London you can only see about 200 stars," says Simon Ould, a science teacher and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. "On Exmoor you can see thousands."

Huxleigh cottage and Kings Nympton village is set in a timeless landscape of rolling hills, steep river valleys and ancient woodland, set well off the tourist track and perfect for exploring. Public footpaths and empty farm roads take you deep into the countryside and to the neighboroughing villages and beyond. The area was considered by early Celtic settlers to have special sacred significance and the names of their many “Nymets” or sacred groves still appear on the map and give Kings Nympton and the nearby villages their name.

At the heart of North Devon's exciting new UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Huxleigh is the perfect base from which to explore a varied and spectacular landscape of cliff top walks, sandy beaches and rugged moorland - all a short car journey away. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are both visible from the hillsides surrounding the cottage. Exmoor is the closest and is designated an International Dark Sky Reserve – the first place in Europe to receive this accolade. The low levels of light pollution allow visitors to enjoy night skies that have long since disappeared from view elsewhere in England. Dartmoor to the south offers stunning views, awe inspiring granite tors, deep wooded valleys with fast flowing rivers, and rugged, wide open spaces. it is ideal for a day out walking or for sitting in the heather having a stream-side picnic. Other outdoor experiences available from Huxleigh include, hiking along the many footpaths and woodland trails, horse riding, fishing, cycling the Tarka trail and golf at Chulmleigh and the nearby Highbullen Country Hotel which also has a first class leisure complex and restaurant.

WILDLIFE
In the valleys below the village a network of rivers provides habitat for a wide range of animals and plants alike, resulting in many stretches of the river being protected as sites of special scientific interest (SSSI). Deer are plentiful and Otters are once again numerous and can be seen most summer evenings by anglers or nature lovers willing to remain quiet and unseen on the river bank. The Taw estuary, below Barnstaple, forms part of the UNESCO Biosphere reserve and is a fantastic place to spend the day watching the many different types of wading birds that can be found there. The number of wading birds, including lapwings, curlews and redshanks, can reach over 20,000! There are excellent opportunities for salmon, sea trout and trout fishing along the Rivers Taw and Mole, either nearby at the Fox and Hounds Hotel in Eggesford or the Rising Sun at Umberleigh, or on a variety of beats along the Taw and Mole valley. Owner has fishing one of the best beats of the middle Taw and a program of fishing can be arranged on a variety stretches of the local rivers. Please allow at least two weeks for us to arrange sporting trips and guided walks. There are also fisheries nearby for the amateur fisherman or for the family.

DAYS OUT
Belstone on Dartmoor and Tarr Steps on Exmoor are great places to have a picnic in rugged and unspoiled countryside and are only a half an hour away. Nearby National Trust properties – Filleigh Estate, Arlington Court, Castle Drogo. For miles of sandy beaches for bathing and surfing go to Saunton, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay. The Devon Coastal Path takes the intrepid walker along miles of beaches and cliffs in areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Braunton Burrows, the largest dune system in England, is a National Nature Reserve and borders the Taw estuary, within the core of the Unesco Biosphere Reserve . (URL HIDDEN)

Julie and I love returning to our Magical Country Hideaway in the Devonshire countryside to relax and have fun away from the big city of New York where we live part of our time. My roots are in Devon and I love to fish the local rivers and explore the North Devon countryside just as I did as a boy. The river Taw valley retains many of the qualities I remember from that time and is a great place to reaquaint oneself with the simple things in life. Julie loves to visit the surrounding villages and small market towns and we spend as much time outside as possible, taking long walks or driving in my old series 2 Landrover "the Beast" – a rather uncomfortable testament to our love of the old and authentic. We visit whenever possible but because we travel a lot, there are plenty of opportunities for others to share in the delights of this magical place. We recently fell in love with a charming thatched cottage in the nearby village of Kings Nympton and have made this into another "home from home". Please take a look. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21244654?
