Private, sunny, furnished and fully self contained studio apartment with large deck, beach access, gardens, gorgeous view of ocean and Mount Baker. Double bed with firm mattress/soft topper. Large window seat, easy rural walk to Eastsound.

Orcas Island - Lovely, sunny, warm, furnished and fully self contained writers lair with large deck, beach access, gardens, gorgeous view of ocean waters and Mount Baker. The Loft has a Full size (as opposed to a "Queen size) bed with firm mattress/soft topper. Large window seat with sea and garden view out front. K
There is a small kitchen, pantry, writing desk, easy chair, dining table, bathroom with shower, skylight at the roof peak and over the bed for star gazing. No smoking in the house or on the property. Internet service is pretty poor at this spot, but free and good in town at the library and Enzo's Cafe. Please do not ask to bring your dogs or cats along as we cannot accommodate more than we already have. The resident cat "Zumi" is the official host and greatly enjoys visiting and relaxing with the guests, so if you are allergic this is something to consider. The Loft is kept as clean as possible but guests do often invite Zumi inside. There is an easy 2 mile walk to the village of Eastsound where you will find tennis courts, the library, theater, restaurants, a great book store with coffee, a brewery, groceries, shops, schools, spa and medical clinic. The hiking in Moran State Park and on the Turtleback Mountain Preserve is not to be missed.
And if you leave your car behind: The best part is you won't have to wait in the car lane to board a ferry - but you must make a ferry reservation if you bring your car over. Hitch hiking is allowed on the island. Many hardy souls come over on bikes, but be aware that bike lanes are not always existent and Orcas is hilly.
Starting on Solstice weekend and running through the Labor Day weekend, Orcas Island has a shuttle bus service which is available on weekends, Friday through Monday.
Travelers can download the schedule and pick-up sites at sanjuantransit/orcas-schedule. There is a local taxi service as well. Orcas also has a bicycle rental shop in Eastsound, and a moped rental shop just above the ferry landing.

Guests have their own private deck looking out over the Salish Sea and towards Mt Baker, access to the beach below, and to a beautiful yard in front. There are stairs up to the Loft.
The internet can be iffy or even unavailable in certain spots on the island. Right now it is not working well here, but who knows about tomorrow... AT&T and Verizon smart phones do work in this location but wifi is poor unless you have your own hotspot. One can most always get fast and excellent internet reception at the Eastsound library even in the library parking lot and at Enzos cyber cafe.

I enjoy sharing this lovely place with my guests, and am happy to get to know them; however, often they come to be by themselves and have quiet time - which I do respect - and so I am friendly but careful to allow them their privacy.

This is a very small old rural neighborhood about two miles from the village of Eastsound, with Buck Mountain very nearby, and many birds, wild turkeys, and deer who roam freely on the road and in everyone's backyard. Because they do roam freely and some people feed them, they have no fear of people or cars, so it is necessary to drive very slowly as you drive on Buckhorn Rd. Bald Eagles, seals, and resident River Otters can often be seen on the beach. A few young children also live at Buckhorn and play in the neighborhood and on the beach.

Best to have a car, or a bicycle with you, although we encourage carpooling and hitch hiking and there are designated signs and spots for catching a ride. There is a summer transit bus operating throughout the island, and taxi service year round.

I do have small dogs, my own highly trained heeler/corgi mix named Lulu, who adores everyone even if she doesn't know them, and two small neighbor dogs that moved in a while ago. I thought I was just fostering them for elderly neighbors but of course that was my mistake and they are determined to stay here....these two little guys, Bertie and Leonard, need to be introduced before you access the garden because they are 10 pound chihuahua mixes and can be territorial. Just so you know....I kick myself for ever letting them through the gate, but there we are....

This is a no smoking property. Maximum of 2 guests in the Loft per night. This is a private fully self-contained very comfortable living quarter. Guests are expected to clean up behind themselves and to leave this private apartment as clean as you found it, tidy and ready for the next people coming in. This effort on your part keeps the Loft rates exceptionally reasonable and there is no added cleaning fee. You may enjoy Zumi the cat because he will greet and adore you, but you must be firm if you don't want him to move in! Please do not ask to bring your own pets along. We love animals but we already have plenty and we just cannot accommodate more.

I retired from a 25 year career as an artist two years ago to become a service dog trainer. Spending time and interacting with dogs and other animals is just something I've always loved, and although the majority of my "work" time here on the island is spent training basic obedience skills and agility, I still do get the occasional service dog to train.
My schooling was in theater arts, with a B.A. from Stanford University, and later Bergin University Assistance Dog Institute. I also play concertina and fiddle in an Irish band for friendship and good fun.
The writers loft is above my art studio and my cottage is just a short walk away. The loft can actually accommodate two people as it has a comfortable double bed. Americans are often used to a queen size bed - you can decide for yourselves if two of you would be comfortable. There is also a window seat that is quite useable for sleeping. Although I enjoy long distance walking and travel, I love returning to my home and this wonderful community. I have lived on Orcas and owned the property for 36 years.
