The cottage faces the sunset, Blue Hill Mountain and Newberry Neck across the inter-coastal ocean area of Union River Bay. The confluence of fresh and salt water create an interesting habitat for wildlife. A small set of wooden stairs steps down to a typical rich Maine tidal zone.
At low tide rocks draped in thick tangle of yellow-green and brown-purple seaweeds (rockweed) surround our pebble beach and are an important part of our coastal ecosystem. The shore also has mussels and nooks for beach combing and exploring. A year-round brook empties into the Bay on the south side of the property and encourages birds and other wildlife to visit the property.
A large deck and the balcony off the second-story bedroom are great places to picnic or for sitting still and enjoying songbirds, ducks, loons, gulls, eagles, on occasion some wild turkeys, squirrels, even seals, and osprey, depending on the time of year.
We equip the house with the amenities we enjoy when we travel and request that our quests treat the house as they would their own vacation home. Our guests agree not to smoke in the house, light fires, or use fireworks on the property. The Cleaning fee is usually $200 and may be as high as $300. There is a refundable security deposit that ranges from $200 to $600 depending (as does the cleaning fee) on the size of the group and pets. If the cleaning fee is $175 we charge $40 and hour for any cleaning over 4.5 person hours. Guests agree to put a load of sheets in the washer and their garbage in the dumpster. We charge extra for cleaning up after pets including hair etc, on our property as well as our neighbor's.
Native to Bar Harbor Maine transplanted to Portland Oregon where I run a non-profit called Still Standing Oregon, which we created to advocate for measures that increase the market value of seismically retrofitted homes. It turns out that extremely liberal Oregon is not as farsighted as one might think regarding planning for the risks associated with a major earthquake. My wife and I vacation in places on the water. We love to kayak.
