El alojamiento

Please note: This old house has it's original, large, Victorian bath... but NO SHOWER!! You will find spiders here, if you look for them but they tend to stay in the corners and don't bother anyone!

As mentioned in the opening summary, the house is old and happily retains the character of it's era. I should point out that while it is comfortable, it has GENUINE "shabby chic", GENUINE distressed paintwork (in the places where as yet I haven't managed to get up the ladder!), and the garden has a somewhat overgrown aspect. It is of course, the wildness of nearly three acres that encourages a huge variety of creatures that also lives here! As I write it is a warm summer's day and the widows are open, light pouring in, balmy breezes blowing through, bugs flying in and out, and a multitude of birds is singing.
The winter is special too but be aware that should you chose to stay in the cold months, only certain rooms are warm. Rest assured that your bedrooms and the kitchen and living room are kept warm thanks to a constant effort by the chief stoker (your hostess!). As long as it is clear that moving from the kitchen to the living room will feel like crossing the Urals in February then all will be well. The Rayburn heats radiators that keep the chill off in the bedrooms and there are thick feather duvets and blankets galore AND hot water bottles for each bed. This more than suffices for anyone who has ever stayed here but again, if you do need to sleep at equatorial temperatures…you may not have read this far anyway!

You will have the means to make real coffee in your room with proper milk and breakfast can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish, within reason! I make all my own bread and preserves and provide organic food where possible. Omlettes are no trouble and I am happy to make porridge to your specifications. For the record, I make my own porridge with lots of whole milk, cooked well with a pinch of salt (tiny, barely discernible) and a pinch of brown sugar on top. If there's cream to hand, a bit of that goes in too!

Please see addenda at bottom, "Other things to note"

Servicios y zonas comunes

As this is my home without divisions, separate entrances or those nasty fire doors that snap shut behind you, guest space is under the same roof as my space but guests of course have access to their rooms, the living room, the kitchen, and the bathroom. I am happy to let folks use the oven to warm up take aways, or fix their own food, etc. and if you desire a change I could be persuaded to do evening meals! Dining in the winter months is in the kitchen. There is also a barn which can be used to store bikes, etc.

Atención a los huéspedes

You will have gathered by now that the house is always occupied and I am usually here all day. I work from home and I am assuming that most people would be out and about during the day. However, if you wish to stay in your room and read all day that's absolutely fine. My intention is to be an agreeable hostess without being imposing!

El barrio

The surroundings are superb with plenty of walks in all directions. The beaches are never far away and I can heartily recommend the café at Ettrick Bay, which is an easy walk from here and open almost every day of the year. If a sea view while you eat your lunch is what you're after, this is it! While there are a few cottages and a house in the vicinity, the manse is still secluded though not totally isolated. Nevertheless, the landscape is very sparsely populated and can be best described as truly rural. If a place to escape from the din of modern living is what you seek then this is the place for you!

Cómo moverse

Bute is easily reached from Glasgow and the airport by train, which brings you directly to the ferry at Wemyss Bay. I am happy to collect guests from Rothesay ferry terminal if need be. It is possible to get around the island on the bus service and you can also rent bicycles in town from The Bike Shed.

Otros aspectos destacables

It is perhaps worth mentioning that the bathroom is shared with the owner. Nevertheless, guests have priority and all the hot water! Please note there is no "power shower" or shower of any sort but the original Victorian bath is very pleasant!. The rooms provide ample space for a family of four with a comfy spare mattress to hand. I am happy to offer reduced prices for children 12 and under. Just ask.

Please know that a very friendly, fuzzy dog lives here!

Addenda, 10th August 2016:
I wish to make it crystal-clear that there are no "24/7" power-shower facilities at my house. As originally stated, there is no shower of any other description either. There is, however, a large and by most accounts, luxurious original, i.e. old, Victorian bath and a large capacity hot water tank that supplies near-boiling water in the mornings (6-9) and evenings ( 5-10). Outside these times, I am more than happy to over-ride the emersion to give a boost of heat should it be required. Please, just ask : ) !!

Normas de la casa
Prohibido fumar
No se admiten fiestas o eventos
Horario de llegada: de las 16:00 a las 20:00.

No rules pertain beyond those which one would expect from any guest. The one exception is that it is helpful if people are not back too late, especially in the winter. Calm and relative quiet are essential in the evenings as your hostess makes an early start! It would be greatly appreciated if guests could vacate their room by 10:00 or thereabouts on the day of departure. Please no smoking in the house.

The adventure begins as you inch forward up the mysterious driveway past the tall grass to the old manse which beckons gently from its characterful windows and old stone walls. Once you head round the corner you enter a magical courtyard full of plants blooming proudly from old French pots placed here and there. Wild birds a plenty are feeding from one of several feeding posts. The back door leads to the kitchen which is definitely the heart of the house bursting with country style illuminated by flickering candles Home made pots of this and that ( esp the strawberry and lemon marmalade yum!) are all around and I felt instantly at home. I had arrived too late to dine out and Margaret very kindly made me the most delicious omelette for supper before I retired to my spacious bedroom and had the best nights sleep in a long time. The sleigh bed is extremely comfortable as was the wonderful old bath which was the perfect length and even had a heart shaped marking under the tap which spouted generous helpings of hot water. You will never tire of looking around and enjoying all the many different paintings and antiques this house has to offer .. there are a few small patches crying out for repair and a wave of the DIY wand but somehow this adds to the charm and I can't think of a lovelier or more interesting place to stay on the island Margaret is the perfect hostess and I'm looking forward to coming back again soon!

Thank you so much for this epic praise. Yes, the DIY wand, I know I have one around here somewhere, ha ha....I am reminded of the scene in the Half-Blood Prince when Dumbledore waves his wand to fix the damage to the Muggle house temporarily inhabited by Prof Slughorn!

I had a wonderful time at Margarets Place, her house is so cozy and beautifully decorated , tucked away in a wild garden -It felt like stepping right into a fairy tale. Everywhere you look there are antique objects and paintings and beautiful rugs.My room was very comfortable, I even had a all the necessities to make coffee first thing in the morning without having to leave my room. And still it was like stepping into another time, the antique furniture and decoration gave the impression Jane Austen had just left the room... My favorite room in the house was her kitchen, with an old gas oven and stove and so many antique pots and pans and china... I never got tired just sitting there and looking around -not to mention the smell of freshly baked bread in the air, as Margaret makes her own bread and Jam... so I even had delicious breakfast in the Morning. Margaret is alovely and very caring host, she was very kind and fetched me from the ferry terminal, despite my arrival beeing delayed several times due to train cancellations ,that was such a relief, after a long journey. She made me feel right at home during my stay, and her lovely and very friendly and cuddly dog Flo was a great housemate, too. So I am already looking forward to coming back and have a cup of tea in her cozy kitchen!

Margaret was a wonderful Host. I loved staying at her old manse very much. We had long chats and I enjoyed her bread and marmelade very much. And she was very helpful with all the questions I had. I would love to come again.

We had the perfect weekend break at the Manse and were equally charmed by house and host. Margaret was friendly and thoughtful and made us feel very welcome, and the house itself is atmospheric, comfortable and full of character; it feels a world away from the busier parts of the island while still being very accessible without a car. We would like to have stayed for longer, and would definitely return. Five stars all round.

The manse is in a perfect location - very peaceful and out of the way, but an easy walk to both Port Bannatyne and Ettrick Bay for lunch or evening food and drink. Margaret's house is very spacious, so would be easy to find a corner to hide away if you need complete peace and quiet (though I spent most of my time in the kitchen!) Margaret is the perfect host and the food and atmosphere was very much a home away from home experience. The bedroom was clean and airy and the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast (porridge - love it - plus bread and home-made jam/marmalade) was made to order with REAL coffee. Can't recommend highly enough as a perfect bolt hole from which to explore Bute.

I am painter with a particular passion for the landscape. Gardening and cooking are life-long interests as well as reading, tennis and sailing, and I am particularly keen on long-distance walking. I also have a passion for old houses and architecture in general, which may be evident from my listing!
