In the quiet hamlet of Newbiggin, below the 'Street Head Inn', my stone cottage resides, with a pretty garden featuring its own burbling beck and beautiful panoramic views. Guests have sole use of the lounge (including their own mini-fridge), where I serve a choice of 11 distinctive breakfasts.
This listing was added in 2019 but is supported by my recent superhost credentials from the county of Kent (please see reviews) and culinary qualifications from Ballymaloe in Ireland. Registered B&B

El espacio
Newbiggin (near Aysgarth) is a 'no-through road' hamlet and is very peaceful at night. Only the locals use the one vehicle wide road to access their houses, my home is at the furthest end of this dead end hamlet and I have off road parking on my drive. I am within walking distance of the very popular 'Street Head Inn' and you can also walk to the Thoralby and West Burton pubs. It is a great place from which to start cycle rides or walks - no need to drive anywhere.

I host one bedroom giving guests complete privacy and allowing me to offer the living room as a private room to guests during their entire stay.

The twin-aspect guest bedroom, with lovely views from both windows, is situated on the 1st floor, above the lounge and immediately opposite your private bathroom. During guest stays the 1st floor becomes the private area for guests. Towelling bathrobes and matching slippers are provided for your comfort and can be used for taking breakfast in your private lounge. There is a TV in the bedroom with limited Freeview channels, however wifi is good in all rooms and there is a smart TV (new in November 2018) in the living room.

Your private lounge is directly below your bedroom so no one else will disturb you either above or below during your stay. At one end are French doors giving access to the sheltered patio and at the other end is a wide window with a view of the front garden and Newbiggin dwellings. Breakfast (or evening meal) is served in this room. A kettle, Nespresso coffee machine and a selection of nespresso coffees and assortment of teas are available 24hrs in this room. In addition there is a mini-fridge where you will find milk but enough room for you to chill your own cans/bottles - large enough for a wine bottle. There is a 'smart' TV with limited Freeview channels, but access to online TV. Also available are a number of board games and cards and on your landing is a bookcase with a selection of books for your enjoyment.

BREAKFAST. Everyday includes: orange juice, tea, coffee (decaff available) cereals, porridge, selection of homemade breads: seed, sourdough and soda, butter, skimmed milk (or full milk if ordered), preserves. Toaster placed by your table for your own convenience. In addition please choose from the following:

1. FULL ENGLISH - bacon, black pudding, sausage, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled/fried/poached egg - see photo
2. CONSERVATIVE - fruit compote/stewed fruit (depending on the season) with greek yoghurt and boiled eggs
3. SCOTTISH - smoked haddock with poached egg or a whole Artisan smoked kipper (please note this is the whole kipper served the old fashioned way on the bone, - a favourite with traditionalists)
4. SMOKED SALMON with scrambled egg
5. EGGS BENEDICT (or combo of any 2 options 5/6/7) - see photo
6. EGGS ROYALE
7. EGGS FLORENTINE
8. DEVILLED MUSHROOM TOASTIES - sauteed mushrooms in a creamy slightly hot sauce served on buttered toast.
9. INDULGENT - French toast made with sliced brioche, caramalised banana, maple syrup and cinnamon - see photo
10. FIONA SPECIAL - whole rolled oats soaked in milk served with a selection of a minimum of 5 different fresh chopped fruit - can also have an egg with this selection
11. PORRIDGE SPECIALS - apple/cinnamon/sultanas or apricot/pecans/honey or almonds/prunes/vanilla - all can be served with cream and a boiled egg to follow.

EVENING MEALS. You may want to consider an evening meal on the day of your arrival (if travelling a long distance) I offer the following choices - 2 courses for £25 or 3 courses for £30 pp, the following is a small selection of what I can offer:

Option J Warm pear and walnut salad with blue cheese dressing and croutons - White fish fillets in a sweet red pepper sauce served with panfried potatoes and broccoli - Hot lemon curd souffles

Option K Cauliflower cheese soup - Crisp Roast Duck with Confit of Sour Cherries served with roast potatoes carrots and peas - summer pudding

Option L Salad of persimmon, pommegrantes in a balsamic shallot dressing - Roast Pork chop with braised red cabbage and panfried potatoes - lemon meringue pie

Option M Sauteed scallops with lentil sauce - ragu bolognese - Meringue nest filled with fruit and topped with mascarpone

Option N Curried lentil, carrot and coconut soup - Cheese souffle and roasted cherry tomatoes served with a green side salad - Tiramisu

I have access to a super fish monger (on a Friday morning only) and if you are a fan of 'seafood' (shellfish included) I could on a Fri or Sat provide a 'seafood' meal please ask if interested - their mussels from Shetland are wonderful.

IMPORTANT: Please not that agreement and ordering must be ahead of your arrival due to the limited access to food shopping and ingredients could change depending on the season. I can cater for vegetarians but I am unable to cater for vegans. As I am not licensed for alcohol please feel free to bring your own.

FOOD SAFETY: I am a registered B&B with Richmondshire D.C. number 19/00103/MIXED. If you have any allergies please inform me prior to arriving, I keep and use both tree and ground nuts on my property.

There is a high-quality 'Dancook 1900' BBQ and a supply of charcoal always on hand. I can provide salads and marinated meats as a full meal for you to cook on the BBQ (if this suits and subject to prior email arrangement) alternatively you are welcome to keep your own purchased ingredients for a BBQ meal in the fridge positioned in the outhouse garage for easy access.

In addition to the TV there is reading material, board games and cards in the lounge for your entertainment.

There is plenty of room for parking and bicycles can be stored in the garage and repaired there under cover.

There is a very warm boiler room where there are clothes dryers for wet clothes and foot wear can be placed to the boiler to dry. My recent guests said I should mention this for cyclists.

A washing machine and separate dryer are situated in the garage for guest use and iron and ironing board can be provided in your room upon request.

For additional guest comfort I provide bathrobes and slippers.

Servicios y zonas comunes
Guests have sole use of the lounge during their stay and this is where breakfast is served facing the patio and back garden. Full access to garden and patio and their own private bathroom. Kitchen is not available to guests. N.B. CYCLISTS - Bicycles can be stored in garage where repairs/change of tyres can be done under cover. There is a very warm boiler room where wet clothes shoes/boots can be placed to dry.

Otros aspectos destacables
Prior to guests arrival it would be appreciated if they could confirm which breakfast option they want on their first morning and perhaps indicate what would be required on other mornings as shopping is not as convenient in the National Park. If I don't hear I will make assumptions.

There is a pub within a short walk of the cottage, very popular would suggest booking if planning to eat there over the weekend and the two nearest villages are within walking distance and both have pubs, they all serve food.

There are five highly rated restaurants (see Trip Advisor) within a short driving distance, ‘White Lion’ at Cray, ‘Blue Lion’ at East Witton, ‘Wensleydale Heifer’ at West Witton , ‘The Sandpier Inn’ at Leyburn and the 'Stone House Hotel' at Hawes.

There is no street lighting in Newbiggin.

Other than the mentioned pubs the only local facilities are a post office at Thoralby, a butchers and a small village shop at West Burton. The nearest town, Leyburn is 9.4 miles away. As a community we are served by the 'air' ambulance for emergencies.

I can prepare a light meal or tray for an evening if discussed and ordered at least 24 hours before arrival.

GUEST SAFETY: I am a registered B&B with Richmondshire D.C. number 19/00103/MIXED. In my kitchen I use nuts. Any guests who have ANY food allergies should discuss with me before booking as I may not be able to cater for them. N.B Food intolerance is not he same as an allergy.
To conform to UK legislation I have carried out a Fire Risk assessment, a certificate is not required as I only let one bedroom and do not have more than 6 bed places in total in my property despite only letting one. My house was converted from an agricultural workshop into a 3 bedroom home in 2002, it conforms with all building regulations and was approved by YDNP planning and Richmondshire district planning authorities. There are hard wired smoke/fire/alarm/detectors outside all the rooms guest use and in addition there is one in the kitchen. There is a portable led lamp which flashes in the dark for easy location should power fail and it is dark and a fire extinguisher on the landing on the first floor. No rooms used by guests are either above the 1st floor or below ground level. Photos of the escape route in event of fire are all posted with the caption beginning 'Safety' - they are the last photos. There is also a floor plan showing escape routes in the event of fire.
FOOD HYGIENE. I am rated as 5 - highest standard. Inspected January 2020.

Ubicación

Leyburn, North Yorkshire, Reino Unido

The Yorkshire Dales National Park, is renowned for its beauty and is very popular with walkers and cyclists offering a relaxing and reflective time away from the hustle, bustle and stress of working life.

Within easy driving distance of my home you can visit Hawes, Aysgarth Falls, Hardraw Force, Bolton Castle, Wensleydale Creamery (Hawes), Coverham Abbey, Constable Burton Hall and gardens, Wensleydale Railway, Forbidden Corner, Town of Leyburn and Town of Richmond – with the only surviving 'Georgian' Theatre, who offer entertaining and detailed tours. I can also recommend a visit to the beautiful garden belonging to Millgate House in Richmond - see tripadvisor reviews.

For nature lovers of interest might be the "Red Squirrel Trail" with The Little White Bus. The bus takes you from Hawes to the trail (20min ride) and you can follow the trail.

Four very highly rated restaurants, are within easy driving distance for an evening meal: 'The Sandpiper Inn', 'Wensleydale Heifer', 'Blue Lion' and 'White Lion'. We have our own pub and the two adjacent villages (both within walking distance) also have pubs. In December the Black Swan in Leyburn reopened after a renovation and it getting excellent reviews on tripadvisor. Please check reviews for all eating establishments.

There are open markets at both Leyburn and Hawes and a huge auction room (Tennants) at Leyburn.

There is a limited bus service (drivers are volunteers) to Hawes and Leyburn from Thoralby/West Burton.

Airbnb 'superhost' in Kent and then moved to North Yorkshire in July 2018. Keen gardener and passionate cook (Ballymaloe certificate highest level achieved). Enjoy home life and comforts and recently moved to North Yorkshire from Kent. Retired from a career in IT, travelled and lived/worked abroad, but now very content and making the most of my new environment. Enjoy socialising but not social media, playing bridge, reading, walking, crafts, listening to the 'Archers', watching 'Strictly' and 'Great British Bake Off'. Would enjoy helping you to make the most of your holiday/break in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

Durante tu estancia
I meet and greet guests upon arrival and show you around my cottage and garden. I give guests their own key so they can come and go as they please. I am available at all times as I live in the property, and I do not use the first floor or lounge when I have guests.

I am naturally sociable and enjoy chatting but like to think I am understanding enough to give my guests their own space. My aim is to make your stay a memorable break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with personalised attention.
