Our Blue Room is available for one month or longer at a SPECIAL Rate sans breakfast and room services. A detached bathroom for guest use only is just outside your door. Linens are included, a Compact Refrigerator/Freezer in the room plus use of kitchen, Parking, W/D, Cable TV, WIFI, and...beach mats. The privacy, significant storage and work space within the room make it very practical for those singles on short assignment, relocating or seeking an unforgettable Hawaiian Island Holiday.

Anthurium Hale is located behind Hilo town, on the island of Hawaii, commonly referred to as "the Big Island" and also known as the "the Volcano Isle" and "the Orchid Isle." Aside from being the 2nd largest city in Hawaii , Hilo is also on record as the rainiest city in the USA, with around 150 inches per year. However, in-between those tropical rain showers you will find lots of sunshine, flowers and island flora.

Hilo is the home of the MERRIE MONARCH FESTIIVAL an International Hula Competition honoring King David Kalākaua and the preservation of the cultural arts of Hawaii. 2018 willbe the 55th year of the festival.

Ours is a well appointed home conveniently located in Waiakea Uka, in the hills of Hilo Town, approximately 2 miles from the University of Hawaii Hilo campus. The Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands but the population is somewhat sparse, thus a rental car is considered essential. We are located approximately 5 miles from the Hilo International Airport, 3 miles from Prince Kuhio Mall, 4 miles from Bayfront (old downtown Hilo.) It is a quiet neighborhood but for the chirping of the coqui frogs in the evening, off the "main drag" and we are on the side of the island that rarely gets heavy vog. Distance to Volcano National Park is 30 miles and up to the top of Mauna Kea approximately 40 miles. .

We have two guest rooms that share a hallway bathroom (tub/shower).

Our home is very private as our objective is to create a little piece of paradise within the confines of the city, close to all of the conveniences, yet a place where one can relax, enjoy the solitude and smell the flowers. The interior decor is a rather eclectic mix that reflects both our passion for things of old, the arts and our love of nature. Our yard features koi ponds and exotic birds plus many wild visitors for our morning and evening feedings; Java Sparrows, Saffron Finchs, Cardinals, Rice Finches along with numerous Doves. It is extensively landscaped with blooming tropical flora plus ferns, palms and many Anthuriums.

This is also the "home" of Mandarin Books HAWAII, an online antiquarian entity that deals in rare books exclusively about the Pacific Rim/Oceania and the arts and antiques that relate to it's people.

Each room features a 22" cable TV, the WIFI is very fast and cell phone signal excellent. (They just put up a new tower that they are making look like an evergreen tree!) International guests are welcome to use our House Phone for local calls if their own phone plans do not offer free Hawaii calls.

We invite all of our guest to enjoy our gardens, smell our flowers and snooze on our punee. An assigned parking area is provided on the paved driveway and a secure lighted entry after dark.

Parking is in the driveway, off street. Please review our detailed directions and don't hesitate to contact us via telephone should you have difficulty locating the house. (Please refrain from bothering the neighbors.)

Courtesy and consideration are always paramount. In keeping with Hawaii tradition, we do not wear shoes in the house and No smoking please. Alcohol in moderation of course. Our SPECIAL EXTENDED STAY Guest is always included for Holiday dinners or festivities.

We are a pet household with small friendly dogs on the premise, fish ponds and exotic birds in the garden.

This was my first experience with AirBnB and I couldn't have been happier with it. Jean was an excellent host. She was easily reachable and always made sure to keep me up to date on when guests would be staying in her other available room. The amenities were great as well. She had more than enough towels and extra linens. There was even extra soap/shampoo in the bathroom for use until I was able to make it to the store. I felt both welcome and like I had enough personal space/privacy. Just an overall great experience.

Jean's place was a perfect place to stay temporarily when I moved to the Big Island. The room and the home were very comfortable and exactly as described. Jean was a kind host and very welcoming. The house is on a quiet street with a lovely backyard and easy access to Hilo. I felt right at home.

Jean was one of the kindest people I have ever met and a perfect hostess. She made me feel at home and her friendly little dogs were my buddies. She has a home that is immaculate and the room is more than anyone would expect with a very comfy bed, and everything you need.She has a garden like a garden of eden. Its a perfect spot.

My stay with Jean was wonderful it was close to where i wanted to go and Jean was a very kind host, very hospitable I had a great time in my 37 days with her. She has beautiful gardens and birds in her secluded back yard.
