Lavapies – El Rastro

This area was in medieval Arabic and Jewish neighborhood outside the city walls. When they were expelled in 1492 Lavapies became the most popular neighborhood of Madrid. In the first half of the twentieth century, the neighborhood had fallen into decline and it was not until the 80s and 90s when it became fashionable among young people and artists. Then began a process of renewal that continues today and has revalued the area. It is a neighborhood with a high immigrant population, which, along with its bohemian and alternative, it the most multicultural neighborhood of Madrid.
In Lavapies there are plenty of bars and cafes, restaurants and shops that reflect the multicultural character. There are many affordable restaurants, and a wide range of ethnic food - Indian, Pakistan, Cuba, Argentina, China ...
In the district, especially in the closest area to the Reina Sofia Museum, several important art galleries.

The Lavapies is bounded by Calle Atocha east, Ronda de Valencia to the south, west Ambassadors Street and Calle de la Magdalena north. Its nerve center is the Plaza de Lavapies (the output of Lavapies Metro). This square is usually full of colorful characters many sources: African, South American, Indian, Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, Gypsies, Spanish .... can impress that is not used, but if someone comes up to you and whispers if like hashish, do not panic, just say "no thanks" politely and go on your way, no one will threaten, nor is there any danger, it's just supply and demand.
The Argumosa Street, leading directly to the Ronda de Atocha and the Reina Sofia Museum in its extension topped by bright red "beret" architect Jean Nouvel. This street is full of bars and restaurants with alternative style outdoor terraces, has become the hub of social life in the neighborhood. Also Lavapies street is full of terraces, many Indian restaurants, allowing you to enjoy a tasty meal spicy outdoor ...
madrid flower market

The streets Hail Mary College are known for its nightlife, there are a variety of local, from a coffee Barbieri, street Ave Maria, which preserved the nineteenth-century atmosphere and brings a bohemian-intellectual groups, to local hard rock of various radicals with dreadlocks and flamenco.
If you want to see and hear is flamenco, we recommend the Candela bar on Elm Street, a real place where they are Roma and non-Roma musicians playing, the "jam sessions" in the back, are famous, but access restricted. Casa Patas, Cañizares on the street, and is best known attraction, the spacious living room, a restaurant and tapas bar is nice and their shows are accessible.

From Plaza de Lavapies, climbing uphill reach Plaza Tirso de Molina,
dedicated to the playwright of the Golden Age who wrote the amoral escapades of Don Juan in "The Trickster of Seville". This square is a point of intersection between several neighborhoods of Madrid: Sol north, the Latin west, east and Lavapies Huertas south.
The square was the meeting place of junkies and Kumar, but has been redone, making pedestrian, and is now occupied by flower stalls and terraces.
Tirso de Molina goes Magdalena street leading to the cinema Doré, at Santa Isabel 3, headquarters of the Spanish Film Archive and excellent original programming: cycles of directors, countries, etc ...
From the Plaza Tirso de Molina arriving in the square plisplas Cascorro, starting point of the famous El Rastro flea market:

El Rastro - The market used to Madrid

This area between Lavapies and La Latina, is known for the famous El Rastro flea market, which is an institution in Madrid and apparently, one of the largest in extent, the world. The trail runs on Sundays and holidays from 10.00 to 15.00. The market covers an area forming a triangle whose vertices are the metro La Latina, Puerta de Toledo and Glorieta Embajadores; being Tanners Bank Street its central axis. (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) map location.

The market is a tourist attraction for its bustling atmosphere and exceptional concentration of curiosities. Its name comes from the trail of blood left by the cattle to be slaughtered, for there the slaughterhouse was Madrid and its surroundings tanneries tannery where the nickname comes the Tanners Bank were. One can find there the most unimaginable objects .... Although not want to buy anything is fun to wander through its streets lined with stalls and objects scattered on the ground and then take in the many tapas bars in the area, in the days Trace, offering the best in their specialties.
Although the market only works Sundays, equipment shops, antiques, crafts, etc. that maintain the "spirit of the Trail" throughout the week. Trail agglomerations are, on the other hand, a good habitat for pickpockets, so you should walk around the market enjoying the bustle, but with the portfolio under control. We recommend you read our safety tips visit Madrid without problems.

Not everything sold at the flea market is a bargain; in fact, the Rastro market is counterfeit and stolen items, authentic antiques are now inside shops: Tanners Bank in Several galleries antique shops and galleries Piquer New Galleries, combining several of them.
At the southern end of the trail, in the Puerta de Toledo (monumental arch built in 1827) is another interesting market: Market Puerta de Toledo.
