El alojamiento

East Cottage (along with the adjoining West Cottage, and The Turret, both also on Airbnb) is one of a number of listed historic buildings around the mediaeval Clonbrock Castle, a National Monument.

The cottage consists of a kitchen, living room, double bedroom, and shower-room. There is a private courtyard at the back.

The main room is heated by a Dru multi-fuel stove (logs and turf supplied), which when it is cold will be lit before you arrive. This is supplemented by electric panel heaters in the bedroom and kitchen, and a towel rail radiator in the shower-room.

There is a 22" HD TV with a Freesat tuner and Wifi.

The kitchen area has an electric oven and hob, a fridge, a kettle and toaster. The ingredients for self-catering breakfasts, including speciality teas and coffees, butter, marmalade, cereal and fruit will be supplied. A small loaf of bread, a litre of low-fat milk, half a dozen eggs and a litre of orange juice will be in the fridge.

Ingredients for cooking including olive oil, salt, pepper and a range of herbs, are also provided.

There is also a washing-machine, an iron and ironing-board, a clothes drying-rack, a hair-drier, garden table and chairs, and a barbecue.

The long decline of the once grand Clonbrock estate left the cottage (along with adjoining West Cottage) roofless and overgrown by 2005. It was renovated, using reclaimed slate and lime plaster in 2012-4.

Detailed information on the history of Clonbrock and the recent restorations - plus all the things you can see in and around the grounds - including maps and photographs, will be found in the cottage when you arrive.

Servicios y zonas comunes

Guests have access to about ten acres of atmospheric private woodland, gardens and riverbank. You will be welcome to explore inside the castle from the ground floor to the battlements, though a few small sections may still be roped off for safety until work is completed.

We (and our guests) can also access other local woodland walks. Fallow deer, red squirrels, pine martens, foxes - even very occasionally otters! - as well as ravens, herons and many other birds - may be seen.

The immediate grounds will be of interest to gardeners, with many old specimens rescued from neglect, and many more and often rare varieties planted in recent years.

There are fish in the river. Guests are welcome to attempt to extract them!

Atención a los huéspedes

As little as you like! But someone will always knock on the door after you arrive to see how you're getting on, and be on hand if you have any questions. Beverly and I live in Garden House next door.

El barrio

Galway city, colourful, vibrant and cosmopolitan - and now a major tourist destination - is about 45 minutes away.

The Burren, to the south of the city, is a picturesque and fascinating area of limestone pavement, while the legendary beauty of Connemara is well within range for a full day out.

But there are many local attractions too, from historical sites to golf courses, from lively market towns to the lakes on the River Shannon. Clonbrock is in the heart of old rural Ireland, but within easy reach of the counties of Roscommon, Mayo, Clare, Sligo, Tipperary and others. (See the flags on the 'Guidebook' below.)

But many of our friends have chosen mainly to explore and enjoy the romantic setting here at Clonbrock.

Cómo moverse

We are an easy, two-hour motorway drive from Dublin airport. Ballinasloe is 15 minutes away by car, and has good coach and rail services to both Dublin and Galway city. If you don't come with a car, we can supply phone numbers of local cab firms. Private parking is outside the front door.

Otros aspectos destacables

In case you and your companion don't wish to share the double bed, we have one generously-sized fold-out bed (with memory foam mattress, bedding supplied). Message us if you want us to reserve this for you, and we will offer to amend your booking with a one-off €12 extra charge.

Our rescue/renovation project at Clonbrock is a work in progress. On weekdays there will usually be something going on somewhere, but it should have no impact on guests in the cottage.

You will find a mobile phone signal, but probably not indoors.

The internet connection, though generally fine, does play up occasionally. Although we have no download limit it's not really suited to streaming movies as the copper line is shared with the rest of the site.

Because the cottage is self-contained, there are no pets in the property as such, but you might encounter our cats, Pumpkin and Edith.

The East Cottage was simply perfect. We had a very difficult day of travel with our 13 month old and we were able to close the shutters and recover from our jet lag in the most comfortable bed and the fresh fruit and stocked refrigerator was a very welcome gift. We explored the grounds and the ruins surrounding the castle and had a very sweet calico cat guide. The pictures don't do the gardens justice. The birds and wildlife in the area were such treat. This was everything you want and more from a castle in Ireland. It is remote, so as long as you are not looking for a place with walkability, you will surely love Clonbrock!

This is an amazing place to stay. The cottage itself is finished to a very high standard. It is cozy, snug and everything that we hoped for. The estate itself is beautiful and you really are away from all the hectic pace of life. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and we had a lot of fun discovering places to visit. I would definitely recommend Connemara which is about one and a half hours drive. We would also like to thank Jonathan for ensuring that we had all that we needed for our stay. He goes above and beyond to make sure his guests have a great time. Would highly recommend this place. It is very special.

We loved our stay in the charming East Cottage. Our immediate impression on entering was that it was exactly what we were hoping for. The cottage feels very cozy and yet has plenty of room. Jonathan and Beverly have decorated the cottage with an attention to detail that makes you feel that you are stepping back in time. The accommodation itself was enough to make us want to return, but the opportunity to explore the castle and the grounds, with a written commentary and map provided by Jonathan and Beverly, made our stay even more special. The cottage was well equipped, communication was good, breakfast items were provided, the stove was laid and ready to be lit and Jonathan was very flexible about arrival time. The directions were good, but we would recommend trying to arrive in the daylight. While we were staying at Clonbrock we visited Clonmacnoise, had dinner in Ballinsloe and enjoyed walking the country roads. We would not hesitate to recommend East Cottage!

If you've ever felt proud of yourself for doing a home renovation, then staying here will certainly humble you after seeing the gigantic project that Jonathan and his wife are undertaking. As listed, we got to stay in a finished part of their castle project with almost unlimited, unsupervised access to the grounds. As Americans, we never get to see such old buildings so close up. We stayed for several nights and had some good walks. Strong wifi, clothes washer, full kitchen. Book with confidence.

Our stay at the cottage was perfect. It was cozy and thoughtfully decorated. Being on the grounds of a 12th century castle which they are restoring was magic.

English, now living here full time. My wife Beverly and I bought Clonbrock Castle in 2005, and have been slowly but steadily repairing/renovating the tower, other buildings and the gardens. I have also worked as a scriptwriter and a computer programmer, while Beverly was a journalist and is now very knowledgeable in historical matters and gardening. We value our privacy but love meeting new people too!
