Información sobre este anuncio
One of three old stone buildings on Airbnb adjoining the castle (two cottages and a turret). Entirely self-contained and private. Quiet, beautiful setting, by a river and gardens on the historic estate. Perfect for a couple. Fold-out bed option.
East Cottage (along with the adjoining West Cottage, and The Turret, both also on Airbnb) is one of a number of listed historic buildings around the mediaeval Clonbrock Castle, a National Monument.
The cottage consists of a kitchen, living room, double bedroom, and shower-room. There is a private courtyard at the back.
The main room is heated by a Dru multi-fuel stove (logs and turf supplied), which when it is cold will be lit before you arrive. This is supplemented by electric panel heaters in the bedroom and kitchen, and a towel rail radiator in the shower-room.
There is a 22" HD TV with a Freesat tuner and Wifi.
The kitchen area has an electric oven and hob, a fridge, a kettle and toaster. The ingredients for self-catering breakfasts, including speciality teas and coffees, butter, marmalade, cereal and fruit will be supplied. A small loaf of bread, a litre of low-fat milk, half a dozen eggs and a litre of orange juice will be in the fridge.
Ingredients for cooking including olive oil, salt, pepper and a range of herbs, are also provided.
There is also a washing-machine, an iron and ironing-board, a clothes drying-rack, a hair-drier, garden table and chairs, and a barbecue.
The long decline of the once grand Clonbrock estate left the cottage (along with adjoining West Cottage) roofless and overgrown by 2005. It was renovated, using reclaimed slate and lime plaster in 2012-4.
Detailed information on the history of Clonbrock and the recent restorations - plus all the things you can see in and around the grounds - including maps and photographs, will be found in the cottage when you arrive.
Servicios y zonas comunes
Guests have access to about ten acres of atmospheric private woodland, gardens and riverbank. You will be welcome to explore inside the castle from the ground floor to the battlements, though a few small sections may still be roped off for safety until work is completed.
We (and our guests) can also access other local woodland walks. Fallow deer, red squirrels, pine martens, foxes - even very occasionally otters! - as well as ravens, herons and many other birds - may be seen.
The immediate grounds will be of interest to gardeners, with many old specimens rescued from neglect, and many more and often rare varieties planted in recent years.
There are fish in the river. Guests are welcome to attempt to extract them!

As little as you like! But someone will always knock on the door after you arrive to see how you're getting on, and be on hand if you have any questions. Beverly and I live in Garden House next door.
Galway city, colourful, vibrant and cosmopolitan - and now a major tourist destination - is about 45 minutes away.
The Burren, to the south of the city, is a picturesque and fascinating area of limestone pavement, while the legendary beauty of Connemara is well within range for a full day out.
But there are many local attractions too, from historical sites to golf courses, from lively market towns to the lakes on the River Shannon. Clonbrock is in the heart of old rural Ireland, but within easy reach of the counties of Roscommon, Mayo, Clare, Sligo, Tipperary and others. (See the flags on the 'Guidebook' below.)
But many of our friends have chosen mainly to explore and enjoy the romantic setting here at Clonbrock.
We are an easy, two-hour motorway drive from Dublin airport. Ballinasloe is 15 minutes away by car, and has good coach and rail services to both Dublin and Galway city. If you don't come with a car, we can supply phone numbers of local cab firms. Private parking is outside the front door.
Otros aspectos destacables
In case you and your companion don't wish to share the double bed, we have one generously-sized fold-out bed (with memory foam mattress, bedding supplied). Message us if you want us to reserve this for you, and we will offer to amend your booking with a one-off €12 extra charge.
Our rescue/renovation project at Clonbrock is a work in progress. On weekdays there will usually be something going on somewhere, but it should have no impact on guests in the cottage.
You will find a mobile phone signal, but probably not indoors.
The internet connection, though generally fine, does play up occasionally. Although we have no download limit it's not really suited to streaming movies as the copper line is shared with the rest of the site.
Because the cottage is self-contained, there are no pets in the property as such, but you might encounter our cats, Pumpkin and Edith.

English, now living here full time. My wife Beverly and I bought Clonbrock Castle in 2005, and have been slowly but steadily repairing/renovating the tower, other buildings and the gardens. I have also worked as a scriptwriter and a computer programmer, while Beverly was a journalist and is now very knowledgeable in historical matters and gardening. We value our privacy but love meeting new people too!
