Double Room at Kookal Eco Farms

Kookal is a beautiful and quaint drive away from Kodaikanal, the Princess of Hills. If you are able to overcome the temptation of stopping by at the charming spots that dot the route, you can cover the distance in a little over an hour from Kodaikanal. It is a perfect destination for those on the lookout for offbeat places to stay.

The Double Room in the Mud House is in a 5 acre property facing the Shola forests and the Kookal lake.

El espacio
The Double Room can accommodate 2 people. (There is also a Wooden Cottage that can accommodate 5 people which is listed separately. Both together can accommodate 7 people.)

Dark skies are spectacular in Kookal and will be a treat for star gazers.

Full moon nights are generally brighter and create a blissful ambience.

You can check the Moonrise, Moonset and Moon Phase calendar for Kodaikanal online to know the above.

Guest access
Feel free to access all areas of the property which include the campfire spot and the gazebo. A barbecue can be arranged on request at extra cost.

Other things to note

Kookal has no fuel stations. So remember to refill fuel before you leave Kodaikanal. There are no liquor shops either.

¿Dónde me voy a quedar?

Kookal, Tamil Nadu, India

Kookal has the biggest patch of the rare Shola forests in the entire upper Palani Hills located in the Western Ghats. It would be interesting to note that the Western Ghats is one of the two biodiversity hotspots in India, out of the 35 worldwide. Kookal is home to 165 species of butterflies and a number of relatively uncommon birds such as the wood pigeons, Nilgiri pipit and 15 types of dabchicks besides the bison (Indian Gaur), mouse deers, barking deers, wild dogs, leopards and tigers.

There are three beautiful water falls. One can be reached in a few hundred metres of trekking and another needs about 2 hours of trekking. Guests may visit these if they wish to. Another one inside the Kookal forest which provides water for the entire village throughout the year requires permission from the forest department which is difficult to obtain.

The Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI) at Mannavanur is just a few minutes drive from Kookal. The site is one of the last extensive chunks of high altitude rolling grasslands left in the Palani Hills, spread over 1,340 acres. There are vantage points from where you can get breathtaking views of the sheep farm. The centre breeds sheep and rabbits for wool and meat.

The Mannavanur Ecotourism site is next to the sheep farm. Horse riding by the lake is one of the highlights of the site.

A 4 km drive from Kookal will take you to a farming village nearby called Gundupatti, where you could visit floriculture and vegetable farms developed inside polyhouses.

The Kookal caves (also spelt Kukkal) are ancient rock shelters that show traces of the descendants of the original Palaiyar (meaning "old ones") tribes who used to wear leaf clothing. The caves are overhanging slabs of different types of metamorphic rocks called charconite and granulite. Till the mid-1980s, over 30 families resided on the hill top, where a small temple is located. The vicinity of the temple commands a spectacular 360 degree view of the mountains and plains.
