A beautiful room for two in a Georgian townhouse. In the centre of town yet step inside & it's tranquil. The interior has an elegant/bohemian mix with an atmosphere that soon calms & rests. Healthy/hearty breakfasts are much complimented and there's the treat of breakfast being brought to the room in courses. Relax by the fire in our candlelit drawing room, and taste some Wild Beech Leaf Liqueur! Come to write or sketch - even one night is a special, soothing retreat for the creative soul.

Brendan House & Tin Jug Studio are close to Birr Castle gardens & Historic Science Centre, as well as the town's charming shops, good cafés and restaurants. This is the home of an artist/writer and a journalist/poet. This is the 'secret' B&B of Birr, with no sign outside the door and no hoards of people staying. Guests have said and written that they felt very relaxed and welcome in this bohemian and elegant Georgian house, filled with art antiques, books and more. Creative and a few famous folk have stayed, from musicians and composers to dancers and poets. There are three lovely period-style rooms: an antique four-poster (double) and two single rooms with canopied and cushioned beds. Each room has its own wash-hand basin (one from Morocco) but guests share one unusual bathroom. The bath was the second installed in a house in Birr in the 19th century, and it was renovated in the late '90s to its original, rich colours, (discovered under flaking white paint.) Have a candlelit bath with scented salts and oils to choose from.

It is a very personalized experience to stay here, with hints of luxury. There are little extras such as spring water and chocolate in the room and of course, electric blankets. No need to get dressed to rush to the dining room in the morning - breakfasts are brought to the room and there are vintage dressing gowns and Moroccan slippers for wearing at ease. Find sketch books and pencils in each room for sketching or writing.

The guest wing corridor has been painted and decorated as if an Arabian tent, with shelves of books on travel. There are masks and lots of pictures with images of foreign places, and a silver tray has all you need to make cupfulls of refreshing herbal or China tea at any time.

There have been many compliments about our breakfasts, some written into the visitors book, such as, 'The best we've had, anywhere'. Much of the food served is local, organic and home-made, and presented with attention to the visual as much as to the flavours and variety offered. Breakfast options can be large or small; hearty or healthy.

When the drawing room fire and candles are lit, it is a wonderful room to relax in. Occasionally an informal dinner is served (with advance booking) such as Rozzie's Casseroles of Lamb in Cider or Beef with Guinness, etc. There are no televisions but a good selection of DVDs of Hollywood and vintage films as well as Russian, French, Japanese classics and opera, favourite old TV series, comedy and children's films, etc.

Tin Jug Studio, our arts studio and gallery, is open to the public on occasions for art exhibitions, poetry readings and film screenings, as well as seasonal, weekly art classes for children. Art classes for 'total beginner' adults can be booked - from one up to three people maximum - for a unique, encouraging two hours tuition in Still Life, etc. The studio is also available at certain times of the year for tourists budget, self-catering/semi-self-catering accommodation (maximum 2 people, for up to 4 nights) with an optional experience of sleeping in an original Irish Settle Bed in the gallery. (A free whiskey included!) The studio is also available during the Summer months to artists who wish to work and stay in Birr for a week.)

Whilst many people come for one night, it is recommended to stay for longer - two or three nights - to enjoy lovely walks and trails. What's to see and experience in and around Birr? Many things: our new artist-created trail, The Famous & Notables of Birr; performances and exhibitions at Birr Theatre and Arts Centre; view ancient castles and monastic sites; experience the landscape and sky in the expanses of boglands or cycle around the Lough Boora Sculpture Park; and see glorious treasures of the Harry Clarke windows in nearby churches. There is lots of outdoorsy stuff such as hillwalking in the Slieve Blooms, cycling (downhill trails) horse-riding and trekking - as well as a local airfield for flying lessons. A custom small bus tour with an excellent guide, can extend your tourism experience in the region, on day or half-day trips. Depending on the night, or the time of the year there are also excellent traditional music nights at pubs or Kinnitty Castle. Birr has lots of festivals too! The longest running being Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival and Scripts Playwriting Festival in Summer; Hullabaloo Children's Arts Festival and OFFline Film Festival in Autumn. Biorra le Gaeilge celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge and at other times there are other Irish language gatherings. Hire a local landscape artist for en plein air tutorials. Still Life drawing lessons bookable at Tin Jug Studio - or simply borrow the key to paint and draw in our arts studio and courtyard garden. Other arty options can include buying-visits artists' studio visits, and current exhibitions.

Other possibilities for an even more romantic stay for two at Brendan House can include afternoon teas, champagne and chocolates, gourmet picnics with Prosecco, guided walks, and spa and beauty extras - just enquire!

Rosalind is an excellent host: from quick and informative communication to a very warm welcome to her beautiful home. We spent two blissful days in absolute comfort and were truly spoilt with the divine breakfasts - a Michelin starred chef couldn't have done as well. Rosalind's home is eclectic and unique while being extremely comfortable, we felt at home straight away. It's rare to feel that the rest of the world is a distant memory, we relaxed completely.

Rosalind's home is beautiful, bursting with character, cozy, warm, relaxing. We put our own logs on the fire, read beside it, slept beside it - the living room was a sanctuary, and the bedroom was amazing from the four poster bed to the neat sink and lamp hidden in the wardrobe. There were candles everywhere, soft lights, and thick duvets. The highlight was the breakfast. Rosalind brought up to courses one by one and we ate amazing plates of fruit, breads and bacon and eggs (all locally sourced) at the table in our bedroom. One of our best, maybe the best, overnight experience on the road in Ireland.

Respuesta de Rosalind:
Oooh! Many thanks indeed for your most kind review, France. For me there was the added delight of hearing a few of those little, soft snippets of your beautiful language spoken in our drawing room (while choosing one of Wild Food Mary's liqueurs for example!). It left a happy imprint in the atmosphere. On that note, I will write again 'thank you' for choosing Brendan House to stay at on your visit to the deep Midlands, and I finish that thanks in Irish (as Gaeilge): go raibh mile maith agut, agus go n-eiri an bother leat. (Had to leave the fadas - accents - out, sorry but the message reads 'thank you a thousand times and may the road rise up to meet you.'
