It is an old tradition in Florida to throw together a tiny cottage or a fisherman's shack somewhere on the property for the enjoyment of guests and relatives. This is how my cottage began its days, and indeed, the funky construction habits of the original can still be seen in the renovated version! But it also has A/C, ceiling fans, and a small but nice bathroom (shower only). These days, the cottage is the winter retreat of Susie, my sister, a retired opera singer. Off season, it is open to guests who want privacy and Old Florida charm.

My street is a short, unpaved road off Stringfellow Rd. ("the" road on Pine Island, which runs 18 miles from north to south. The Cottage is at the back of the property, behind the main house and separated from it by a trellis upon which Carolina jessamine grows. Guests have sole occupancy of the cottage, including the little lanai and the secret back deck, as well as a parking space. My goal is to make you feel that Susie's Old-Florida Cottage is your home during your stay.
Atención a los huéspedes
I am in my Summer Headquarters in New York during the off-season, but I am always available by text or phone. My wonderful manager, Mel Meo, lives next and will answer all your questions and assist you out if you need help. The gardener comes every couple of weeks to weed and mulch.

The Cottage is an older home, and it is most definitely not a motel. We are not hoteliers. This is my winter home, and it has both the charms and the annoyances of a home. You make your own bed and sweep/vacuum the floor yourself. For longer stays you can arrange with Tammy to change sheets/towels and tidy up. Otherwise, you're on your own! If such things bother you, skip it. If the idea of having osprey for neighbors sounds appealing, this is the place for you!
My 70 year old sister occupies the Cottage during the winter months, so it's important to me to keep the premises clean and neat. She is allergic to cats and dogs and cigarette smoke, so, sorry, no pets, and no smoking. Springfield Ave is a quiet neighborhood and not suitable to late night jamborees. Your neighbors work and have to get up early! If anything breaks, please let us know -- do not try to fix it yourself.

I am a freelance writer and the editor. I love gardening and mountains and trees and animals. I play tennis and duplicate bridge. I have traveled around the world, and lived for many years in Egypt. I know what a gift it is when someone opens up their home to a traveler.
I live most of the time in an off-grid cabin in upstate New York. But since 2005, I have wintered on Pine Island in Lee County, Fl. In 2014, I finally bought a place of my own on a quiet side street on Pine Island. I fell in love with the beautiful yard, with its wonderful tropical plants and trees--so different from the northern flowers and trees I'm used too, but just as wonderful. There are two habitable buildings on the property--a 1970s single-wide trailer that has sprouted extra rooms, and a two-room fisherman's cottage in the back. The place needed a lot of work, so I've been renovating ever since, "upgrading" as I call it. And I planted citrus trees, a Gumbo Limbo tree, and a seagrape hedge that is well on the way to giving the yard the jungle feel I crave. Both buildings (I call the main house "Seagrape Escape," where I live each winter and the cottage "Susie's Old-Florida Cottage," in honor of my sister, who visits every February) are humble, but comfortable and private. I offer both homes exclusively on airbnb in the off season. If you have any questions, just ask!
