Our much-loved cottage is located on the River Wakefield in the hamlet of Undalya, at the gateway to the Clare Valley wine region. Recently renovated, it’s a comfortable one-bedroom home with wonderful views of the historic basket bridge. Our 120-hectare property is on your doorstep, with kangaroos and abundant bird life along the river and in our wooded hills, and the river pools are home to brown trout and redfin.
Great for couples and solo travellers, and dogs are welcome inside and out.

El espacio
The original two-room cottage was built in the 1850s and has been in our family since 1932 when my grandparents bought the property. Over the years it has been used as a home, an art studio, and for several years served as the Undalya Post Office, run by my grandmother.

From the front verandah there are fabulous views up the valley and out over the river with its old red iron bridge, built in 1879. You’ll find plenty of wildlife if you walk along our stretch of river or through the hills, which have been left to regenerate for the past 30 years and now provide fantastic habitat for native fauna and flora. And if fishing is your thing, you can try your luck in any one of the 5 or so long pools in our section of the Wakefield River.

The cottage has been added to over the years, and our recent renovation has turned it into a comfortable and welcoming one-bedroom home – the perfect base from which to explore the local area and beyond. There is a lovely living/dining room with a large wood heater that warms the whole cottage on cold nights. The kitchen and back room look out over our pistachio orchard and from the bedroom you’ll wake to views out over the river and more often than not the sound of kookaburras, magpies and a wide array of bird life.

Our place is great for singles or couples, and your four-legged friends are welcome to stay … but you’ll need to keep a close eye on them while they’re outside as there is no fenced garden area attached to the cottage. We know from our own spoiled doggo that they may end up on the sofa or bed, so it would be great if you could bring a dog blanket with you to minimise muddy paws and hair!

Amenities
The cottage is set up with Netflix and broadband WIFI but we no longer have free-to-air TV as the reception is too unreliable.

We provide all the basics you’ll need for a comfortable stay, including bedding, towels, firewood for the combustion heater, tea, coffee, some breakfast supplies and kitchen essentials.

The historic town of Auburn is a short drive away and has a well-stocked IGA, a couple of good restaurants/cafes and is the starting point of the Riesling Trail – great for cycling and walking enthusiasts. The Trail has replaced the old railway line and passes through some spectacular countryside, and past numerous wineries, restaurants and cafes on its 22 km journey from Auburn to Clare. If you're looking for bike trails closer to home, the Rattler Trail runs from Riverton to Auburn, where it joins onto the Riesling Trail. The Rattler passes by Undalya just to the east of Horrocks Highway.

The township of Clare offers good shopping facilities, a number of great restaurants and cafes, and an excellent golf course. There’s also a gas barbecue for your use if you’d rather just relax at home and enjoy the views from the front verandah.

Servicios y zonas comunes
The cottage and surrounding garden is yours to enjoy. You're also welcome to walk in our hills or along the river and we're more than happy to point you in the right direction, and there is more information in the house manual at the cottage.

Undalya, Australia Meridional, Australia

Undalya was once a thriving township with three hotels, a school, general store, butcher, saddler and more. Our property now encompasses a number of these old stone buildings and they form part of our work sheds and studio. Ruins of the Cob and Co changing station and Queen's Head Hotel can be seen on our hills to the south, and along our stretch of river are the remains of old wool washing operations and the lime kilns used to power them. Other historic town buildings are now privately owned dwellings, predominantly on the north side of the river. Our cottage is easily accessible from Horrocks Highway and is situated on the old main north road (now a local access road) on the southern side of the old basket bridge, just over 5 km south of the township of Auburn.

The things I love include travel, art, food and exploring different cultures, and I enjoy a glass of good wine or two ... especially shiraz from the Clare Valley in South Australia where we have a property. I'm a graphic designer by background but most recently I was general manager of a national not-for-profit arts organisation which was full on but fun. I love to work out ways to improve systems and processes, for myself and others, and I always try to leave things better than I found them. I share my life with a fabulous partner and a spoiled dog who's taken over our lives!
