There is nothing else like this in Western North Carolina. It's a converted car dealership from the 1920s with an integrated two-story modern loft apartment attached. The loft is in Marshall which is a cool small town with everything you could want, and it's only 20 minutes from Asheville. It's an art-filled, architecturally unique property with large decks overlooking the French Broad River.

El alojamiento

The property is spacious, comfortable, private and fun. There's plenty of on-street parking with a protected car port if needed. The architecture and artwork are unique and there are many artistic details throughout the space.

The upper riverside deck overlooking the French Broad River is a great place for cocktails, coffee or for dining. The living space is two levels of over 1900 feet of private space which you have all to yourself. There are two living rooms, one overlooking the river. There are three outdoor spaces--two decks and a private kitchen garden with culinary herbs, a table, chairs and a charcoal grill. There's conventional heating and AC and a wood-burning stove when things get chilly.

It's right in the center of Marshall, which is a very cool small town just 20 minutes from Asheville. Marshall itself has loads to offer with restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, galleries, artist's studios, a health food store, and live music several nights a week, and most of the music is FREE! There's a music hall next door. There's also yoga and Pilates classes, massage, and acupuncture all within a short walking distance.

It's perfect for bicyclists, hikers, rafters, kayakers, horseback riders photographers and tourists. Some of the best wet and dry outdoor activities in Western North Carolina are right outside your front door or a short drive. Also some of the best hiking in the world is just a few miles away on the Appalachian Trail.

This property is literally right on the train tracks that run through the town of Marshall.

There's currently no cable but there's a Roku box with over 80 entertainment and sports channels, and there is super fast wireless internet and an HD TV that you can hook up to your computer. You can also cast from your phone, tablet or computer to the attached Chromecast device if you have a Chromcast app, meaning anything you can see in your Chrome browser you can "cast" to the TV.

There is a cleaning fee of $80 for bookings of less than five nights. If you stay five nights or more I will refund the cleaning fee separately.

The place is not set up for younger children but children over 12 are welcome. It's not unsafe. It's just set up for adults.

Servicios y zonas comunes

Guests will have secure private access to the entire living space. This includes two bedrooms, two living rooms, one bath, a kitchen and a dining room. This also includes a private patio, and two private decks with outdoor living and dining spaces. There is a second full bath available, if needed, that is shared with the owner who sometimes occupies a completely separate adjacent apartment.

Atención a los huéspedes

I will usually not be present at the space but I may be staying in a separate private apartment in the building, or in the area while you are there.
Usually I will make arrangements to get a key and instructions to you. I can meet you in person or arrange to have someone meet you if you prefer.
I'm available 24/7 by text or phone and by email.

Otros aspectos destacables

This property is literally right on the train tracks that run through the town of Marshall. The trains that come through are close and loud, particularly the train's horns. But they only come through a few times each day. The trains are both awesome, and awesome.

Watch the video of the train in the Residential Space page on the site at 31northmain.

There's a music hall next door, but it's not very loud, and they don't play late. If you're interested read the reviews to see what other guests say about the train and noise. It hasn't been an issue. And I get lots of repeat guests!

David was so attentive and quick to respond upon my inquiry to staying at his place. This continued upon our arrival date. He texted us to make sure we had arrived safely and everything was going ok. This place was absolutely amazing! There was so much character to this place while still providing a VERY comfortable place to sleep and hang out. The place was very clean and I felt extremely safe in the neighborhood. The view from the back deck was gorgeous (nice touch to have the binoculars to watch the birds!) and I couldn't get enough of the train. It took my breath away when it first came through. Every time we were there and it came through, I jumped up and just sat and watched it. This is the first place I have stayed that I want to tell all of my friends about.

Great host and great place! David provided detailed instructions on everything and was quick to respond when we had questions. Everything was as described in the listing… if not better. The wifi is very fast! The loft itself is amazing, unique, and unlike any other we’ve ever stayed. Very comfortable, lots of space and great views. We chose this location to be centrally located to Asheville, Hot Springs, and other outdoor activities; but the town of Marshall turned out to be a highlight of our trip. It has great places to eat and friendly people. We highly recommend the music and food at the “Good Stuff” bar & grill next to loft. Would definitely stay again!

David's loft was one of the most interesting places I have rented. The description was accurate because the loft would not be conducive to children, but if you are looking to get away from it all, Marshall is a unique and friendly town. My son and husband enjoyed biking at Bailey Mountain Bike Park while I relaxed, visited the quaint shops, and read a book by the river. There's plenty of room and lots of interesting art work displayed throughout the workshop, loft, and in the town. The train was very close, but I enjoyed seeing it go by. There's also a bar next door with live music, but you can enjoy it on the deck or go have a beer and partake in the fun, as suggested by David. I would definitely stay again.

David's Riverfront Loft in Marshall is magical. We really liked the way that that the warehouse feel of the bottom floor transitions into a beautiful and cozy sitting room and two bedrooms on the second story. The view of the river and old school/artist studios on the island is stunning! The contemporary art that is hanging is also quite interesting and contributes to the uniqueness of the space. The little town of Marshall is wonderful, with a good coffeeshop and bakery nearby. The Madison County Arts Council, which is just down the street, and Zuma Coffeeshop next door, present music on a regular basis. This region of the Southern Appalachians is rich in musical tradition and the performers that you can hear in Marshall are extraordinary. My only advice to potential visitors is to make certain that you like trains! Freight trains come through Marshall 4-5 times a day/night; the track runs right along the river and you can almost reach out and touch it from the deck when it passes through. We found this exciting and part of the wonderful ambiance of the town. If you are a sensitive sleeper you may want to bring something to mask or block the sound. All told, this is a wonderful place to spend a vacation and we plan to return on a regular basis!

We loved the loft apartment . It was very spacious and the art work was an added bonus - the deck overlooking the river was wonderful :my husband couldn't wait for the the trains and I found I enjoyed them just as much ! the neighborhood is adorable. Clearly this is David's second home and not just an investment Prperty which makes it that much more inviting .

Although I never saw David, I found him to be charming, funny, and easy to communicate with. I will say that this loft was the most unique, artsy, and unusual place I have ever stayed through Airbnb. The amount of personal items and overall estetics made me feel uncomfortable, probably because I am boring and not super adventurous when traveling alone. The view of the river from the balcony was beautiful.

Respuesta de David:
Thanks, Lauren. I appreciate the constructive comments. It has given me ideas on how I might make the place more comfortable for each sort of guest. I'll make some adjustments to the photos and enhance the descriptions so guests can better appreciate the unique character of the place even before they arrive. David

This stay was one of my favorite!! The host was beyond accommodating and helped me with last minute travel plans.... Even helping me find a place under shelter to park my vehicle, which didn't have a top, to keep it out of the rain. The property is as described..... Only better. It has that rare quality of adding up to more than the sum of the parts... The best word I can think of to describe it is "Charisma"... It's just full of character enough to make the stay like an "Adventure" vs. an overnight stay. But in a comfortable, relaxing way... I'd stay again.
