Set in an acre of wild flowers and up a mountain .
The Space
Set in the beautiful Dyfi Valley Biosphere the Boatel is literally a bed in a boat! Not to mention a beautiful open plan cooking and living space – all in a shed AKA the Boat Roofed Shed. Recognised for its amazing and unique qualities, it even won the infamous Cuprinol’s Shed of the Year in 2013. It’s our absolute pride and joy and we love sharing it with our guests!
We’ve hosted comedy festivals, exclusive concerts and curious tourists in our little mountain hideaway and Alex (aka DJ Badly) even uses it to prepare his sets for festivals such as Glastonbury.
We built the shed in 2012 using recycled materials and it was our first major project. Alex is normally a rubbish DIY person, so designing and building the whole thing ourselves was a great achievement and we couldn’t have been happier to win both the ‘Cuprinol Shed of the Year’ Unique Category and the Overall category in 2013.
From the shed you can see across Cader Idris (part of the Cambrian Mountains of Snowdonia). It’s so beautiful even in the maddest of weathers, you can close the door, light the candles ,pop some kindling in the wood burner and be snug and warm in moments.
Our guests all love staying in the Boatel - they love the peace, the location, the structure, the ambience, and the curios (Alex is a big collector and has been on antiques roadshow with his Poole Pottery collection!). As well as the relentless throwing of Frisbees for the dogs!

Guests are welcome to use the house if they need to connect to WIFI/wash up /use the bathroom or retreat from bad weather

As much or as little as you like or think appropriate.

We live in the dyfi valley biosphere and we are very committed environmentalists. There are a lot of fantastic Visitor attractions in the area, particularly the Centre of Alternative Technology, Talyllyn Railways and of course Cader Idris – which is part of the Cambrian Mountains of Snowdonia which can be seen from the boat roofed shed!

We are located on a farm up a mountain. Access is a bit difficult for the less abled between the parking places and the Boatel, shed and other facilities.
Public transport. Nearest railway station is Machynlleth 7 miles away. Buses from Machynlleth are infrequent and your best bet would be for us to pick you up!

The field kitchen is in the boat shed which has a fridge and basic cooking facilities. You can either wash up al fresco or come to the house to wash up.
There is a compost loo and an outdoor solar powered shower which is attached to the back of the house that you access via the back or front garden and an outside flushing toilet. You are also welcome to use the loo and shower in the house too.
It is very peaceful here, ( and occasionally windy)
You’ll need to bring your own towels.

Please note that we have our own private water supply from a spring. Our water is ultra violet and particulate filtered before it leaves the tap!

7) Suggest you bring appropriate wet weather/ out door clothing just in case

Sarah and Alex

The Boatel is a wonderful getaway for couples. The Shed of the Year 2013 is a wonderful shelter, and a sight to behold! We had a wonderful weekend, it's an amazing stopping point if you're looking to stay somewhere on the way up to Snowdonia and the likes (Also, just a great place to get away from the wicked world and chill out) This place is described to the detail with accuracy for the page, Sarah and Alex are wonderful hosts. As a side note, be prepared to throw a frisbee a lot- I didn't have a good arm for it and I think the dog knew... oh the shame... *****

This was our first experience with air bnb, and it was such an amazing experience. The photos and descriptions are incredible but still don't do it justice to just how magical it is. Our hosts were helpful and friendly with detailed directions on how to get there, we were given a tour on arrival and even some fresh eggs from the hens! Staying in the boat could get chilly however there are many ways to heat up with a fan heater in the bedroom and a lovely fire in the shed. We had many visits from the various animals that live there and replaced our alarm clocks with sound of lambs each morning. We would happily visit again with friends!

A truly unique stay with fantastic views over to Snowdonia. Alex and Sarah were wonderful and welcoming hosts. It can seem rather cramped but as long as you're tidy and watch your head on the low beams you'll have a fab time!

We stayed for 2 nights and it was excellent! The sleeping was in a boat and the cooking/lounging in the award winning boat shed. It is situated high up a hill with an excellent view of the mountains. The hosts are absolutely lovely and make you feel incredibly welcome. Everything you need is supplied - the boat and shed is of course quite small and this just adds to the character. We had a lot of fun and would happily return :)

What an amazing place! The photos don't do the location justice. My friend and I had a great time. I would recommend bringing food to prepare in the shed and taking it easy on the surrounding roads if you're new to the area. Sarah sent super helpful directions. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for an outdoors get away and we hope to come back.

What an amazing place to stay! The boatel and Sarah and Alex's place was in a beautiful wilderness surrounded by greenery and sheep. We loved chilling out in the kitchen/living room shed with candlelight and the wood burning stove. Sarah andAlex were really welcoming as were the dogs and cats, and it was great to chat. The shower is hot and powerful, the boat is really cosy. I'd definitely come again for a countryside escape and lots of fresh air.
