El barrio

The house is located in the the municipality of Stio Cilento, a small village about two kilometers away.

The first settlements on the site date from the fifth century BC, although the borough of Stio originated in the year 1000. The name derives from the Latin "ostium", which means entrance, to indicate the place of access to the state of Magliano, one of the five states of the Norman barony of Novi, which was part Stio together with the villages of Gioi, Capizzo, Gorga and Magliano Vetere. It was an independent "University" and boasted its own symbol, consisting of three hammers on a rampant lion.

He followed the fate of the State of Magliano and subsequent Barony until 1806, when with the end of feudalism by Joseph Bonaparte, Stio was elected chief town, and it was aggregated fraction of Gorga.

Characteristic is historical center that already in the Norman period was fortified. Recent surveys in the former church of St. Peter, in the south of the village, during the restoration works have revealed walls of medieval construction, and the type of structure built suggests that there was a fortress to control the road connecting the two castles of Gioi and Magliano.

Cómo moverse

At about 2 km from the town center, through dense vegetation and dirt paths, we come to the "Valley of the Mills": here, along a picturesque river, you can see the ruins (some dating back to 1300) of five water mills.
In some areas, the river makes some basins similar to cold pools: among them, really special is the "Puzzo re Rafaili", located downstream of a wild natural landscape and characterized by wooden stairs and stone tables and chairs.
A little further away, you can visit some important UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Paestum (27 km) and Velia, the ancient Elea (33 km), or reach the spectacular sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte on Mt. Gelbison (1,705 meters) in the municipality of Novi Velia (18 km).
About 35 km far away, the beautiful Cilento coast, full of beach resorts with crystal clear water (Pioppi, Acciaroli), where you can taste fresh fish.

Otros aspectos destacables

It can be especially interesting stay during certain special occasions celebrated in the village:

- Fair of the Cross (September 1)
The most important fair of Cliento, whose origin dates back to the Middle Ages, when monks Basilian Chapel of "Santa Maria della Croce" recalled pilgrims not only to visit the precious relic of the cross, brought on site at the behest of San Nile, but also to trade their products.

- Feast of Saint Vitus (15 September)
Introduced in 1887, it is a votive feast dedicated to the saint for protection from rabid dogs.

- Feast of St. Paschal Baylon (May 17 and last Sunday of August)
Feast of the patron, during which typical ceremonies and performances take place: the procession with the saint through the streets of the village, the musical band, concerts, fireworks.

- Feast of Corpus Christi
The SS. Sacrament is carried in procession through the streets of the village where, in appropriate corners, altars decorated with flowers of gorse, branches of ferns and "leafy branches" are set. At each altar there is a stop for the blessing of the people.

- Chestnut Festival
It takes place in November and allows you to taste local products (honey, cakes) made with chestnuts.

- Festival of the poor dishes of Cilento (August 17 to 23)
In it you can taste typical dishes of Cilento, prepared with simple products of the earth.

The house, the hospitality , location make for a simply extraordinary stay. Everything was impeccable: from communication prior to being welcomed most generously by Giovanna , to the discovery of this remarkable house in a pristine and glorious environment. Breakfast every morning on "The Crow's Nest" , a small spit of a terrace overlooking a wild valley with mountain crests dominating the distance.I certainly would like to return to this astounding place. Very suitable for anyone wishing some peace in exceptional surroundings in a most amenable and beautifully restored property. Discovered a little bit the area: the gola del fiume calore and the coast which is lovely.

Endroit magique !!!

This is a hidden gem, a beautifully restored landhouse on the green and diverse countryside of Southern Italy. We thought of not writing a review, as to keep this wonderful place to ourself ;) But off course, this place should be enjoyed by all people who love nature and real quietness! Before arrival we had pleasant contact with Fransesco, who gave us all sorts of advice as to where we could eat the best mozzarella and so on. His brother Paolo was there to pick us up in the village of Stio, because the road to the house is somewhat unpaved and very remote :). Paolo explained everything about the house and also recommended us to go to the local foodfestival held in Stio (which was great!). He was always available if we had any questions. The house itself is spacious, beautiful and makes for an authentic countryside experience. There is a big vegetable garden where we could pick whatever we wanted (We made delicious tomato soup with mascarpone!). You need more than a day to soak in all the beauty that surrounds the house; they have kiwi's, olives, kaki's, prunes, eggplants, tomatoes, peaches, peppers, apples, pears and a lot more. The view is simply stunning and quiets your mind. That's why we asked Paolo if we could stay another night, which was thankfully ok. Thanks for this experience, we would definitely come again! Also, Paolo told us he had two beautiful houses at the shore nearby, which are also not too touristic; would love to go there as well! Thank you.
