The North Fork consists of a 30 mile narrow spit of land extending into the Atlantic Ocean at the easternmost end of Long Island. The hamlet of Southold was named so when settlers from Europe arrived in 1640. The villages that dot the two main roads bisecting this part of the island from East to West, each have their own historical society interested in maintaining and nurturing our history through their museums and historic districts. The North Fork, unique to our part of New York, has retained it's character as a New England community, graced with many historic buildings, barns with many square miles of working farms. The rural nature of the areas with over 50 vineyards and even more farms is a surprise to many who think of Long Island as suburban, or the resorts of the Hamptons on the South Fork.
The North Fork is of course surrounded by water; the Long Island Sound to the North, and the more placed waters of Shelter Bay to the South, the body of water that separates us from our sister fork. Some of the best fishing in the world is to be found off our shores, and all the activities associated with an ocean side community are available to our visitors, such as sailing, kayaking and swimming. Some of the best chefs on the East Coast have chosen to set up shop here because of the great local fresh, organic produce and our restaurants are amongst the best in the world.
Beautuful landscapes, stunning sunsets, great food and wine are just some of the favorite things our visitors love about the North Fork. We look forward to helping you enjoy them too.
The Shorecrest Beach House is located on the northern shore of the hamlet of Southold, approximately 25 minutes drive from the town of Riverhead, (exit 73 off the Long Island Expressway from NYC). Having a car to get around can be very convenient, as this is a rural area where villages, amenities and places of interest like farms, farm stands, museums, golf courses and wineries to name a few, are scattered along the two main roads from Riverhead to the west to Orient Point at the far western end. However many travelers prefer to take public transportation and travel by bicycle or even boat once they are here.
From New York City, Brooklyn and points west, visitors can take the Long Island railroad to Southold or Greenport, or the Hampton Jitney North Fork service which stops at all village between Riverhead and Greenport.
Visitors traveling from Boston or the East coast north of Long Island often take the Cross Sound Ferry which can transport visitors by car or on foot, from New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, or from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, a 55 minute drive west of here.
Once on the North Fork there is a local bus service which travels route 25 to and from Orient Point and Riverhead and plenty of places to rent bicycles if needed.
Coming from the more easterly part of the South Fork visitors can take the car ferry from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island on the south side and then drive to the North Ferry to get to the maritime village of Greenport. If you have a boat it is easy to find a mooring at the local marinas and even tie up at one of the many waterside restaurants or bars. For a map showing the location of the house and useful local places to visit, visit the Area page of the Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast website.
There is no smoking permitted inside the house or rooms; however you may smoke in the Garden or deck area. Pets are considered based on a pet fee and adherence to house rules which can be found in more detail on the Shorecrest Property Management website.
