Enjoy a carefree easy stay in our clean, bright, spacious home on Hill Road in Sister Bay, three quarters of a mile from Lake Michigan. The private 1,200 square - foot dwelling offers one large king loft bedroom (2nd fl) and a 1st floor bedroom. There is a well equipped open kitchen/living/dining room with gas fireplace. South facing sliding doors open to the meadow and amazing sunsets. There is a sofa sleeper for extra guests, washer and dryer & lots of extras! See house manual for details.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The private house apartment is 1200 square feet and attached like a duplex to the main house. It shares a wall with the main house but is completely independent and private with a locked door separating the two dwellings.

The private entrance is closest to the driveway platform and has three stairs and the lockbox for the keys inside the jamb of that door. We will provide you with the code to the lockbox the day you arrive. Expect that the cleaner will leave the front door unlocked for you and the evening outdoor lights on for easy arrival.

In the foyer there is a closet for hanging clothes, coats, boots, beach bags, coolers. This closet also is where we store the SMART TV which you can set up if you like. We have the highest speed WiFi offered in Door County. We leave extra cozy blankets on the top shelve to use, they are especially nice for night sky star watching in the meadow.


There are hardwood floors throughout the house and beautiful wool area rugs. The main living space of the Meadow Sweet is a 21x 21 room with 10 foot ceilings, it has an open kitchen/dining /living room design and offers sunlight from north, south and west windows. A gas fireplace in the main room provides additional heat in the spring, winter, and fall. There are two sofas including a pull out sofa for extra guests ( additional fee after 4 guests) and other comfortable furnishings. South facing patio doors leads to a new large deck that wraps around that west corner of the house giving access to the open meadow and outdoor furniture. There is short mowed walking trails around the property to enjoy and large circle of furniture we call the counsel for gathering anytime of day but is particularly special at sunset and for dark sky star watching.

The kitchen has a hardy Dacor gas range with a large griddle that sits on the top of the stove for cooking pancakes, fish etc..( feel free to store it) a dishwasher, large fridge. Lots of spacious countertop and a kitchen island bar with four stools, plus a small kitchen table (extra leaf and two folding chairs in pantry) makes it fun and easy to enjoy meals in the Meadow Sweet. There is a full set of tableware, cookware, baking ware, small appliances, cutlery, and kitchen accessories most everything you might need. You are welcome to use any condiments, spices, oils, and cooking staples like flour, sugar, coffee, tea, rice, pasta and all paper products are also stocked.

The 2nd floor king loft bedroom is a roomy, 21x21 gabled room with a north and south windows. There is a king bed, large dresser cozy couch, lamps, area rug etc. The second bedroom is on the first floor down the hall from the main room and across from the bathroom so no need to climb stairs. It has a queen bed set, dresser, hanging closet and chair.

We live on a hill so it is high and dry land and the many windows with screens let the meadow breeze flow through the house nicely. Please feel free to use the clothesline for wet and sandy beach stuff. We use it to dry the sheets on the line in the summer so they are super fresh. We do have central air throughout the house which is controlled the main house and a remote nest thermostat. In Northern Door we seldom have a need to turn the air on so most of the time it is off. We have installed portable AC units in each bedroom and if this does not cool enough for you we can turn on the central air if requested.
Additional Things to Note
GARDEN GABLES WEDDINGS - Our neighbors have a beautiful property where they host six weddings a year, usually on a Saturday night with either live music or amplified music, often we book garden gables guests but please be sure to inquire if this dynamic is not desirable during your stay.

PETS- We love animals and have a Border collie named BLUE and two cats TULIP and TRUFFLE who live on the property. We are more than happy to host you and your pet if you can agree to the standards and practices below.

-Dogs are not automatically approved, please introduce your pet to us in your inquiry. -

DOG BEST STANDARDS AND PRACTICES- We love dogs and have welcomed them for years so have learned a few things and made some guidelines so that we are on the same page. Please try your best to follow these guidelines so that we can remain pet friendly.

1. Dogs must be completely house trained, no exceptions
2. If dogs are off leash they must be well behaved when sharing outdoor space. If you know your dog can get territorial or aggressive he/she should not be off lease on the property. If your dog chases or is aggressive to cats they should not be off leash on our property.
3. Dogs barking or growling continuously while owners are home or away are not ready to be our guests.
4. Dogs are not allowed on furniture. We know this is hard to manage on vacation when you want to snuggle with your dog. So if you know you may not be able to enforce that rule please bring your own blankets to throw over the furniture.
***We don't expect or have the time to clean animal hair off the furniture, it is very time consuming and this task is not included in the cleaning fee. So please remove all dog hair yourself with the vacuum and lint brushes (under the sink) we provide.
5. Dogs that chew on furniture, rugs etc.. are not allowed. . All damages will be paid for at pet owners expense.
6. Maximum two dogs unless otherwise approved.
7. Please deposit all poop bags to the main garbage receptacle next to the green pole barn.

We live near the intersection of Hill Road and County ZZ in Sister Bay. It is an 2.5 miles drive down Hill road to the center of the Sister Bay village and the bay shore/ sister bay beach. To the east of our home about 3/4 mile is the lake shore with easy access to Sand Bay beach where we often enjoy a private morning swim with the sunrise. Also, a few miles further north is Rowley's Bay which is a great boat launch for small crafts.

Our DOOR COUNTY Profile Tim's parents purchased a modest lakefront vacation home on Door Bluff Road in 1969 when he was nine and the second oldest of six. His mother Inger had arrived in the US from Sweden ten years earlier and found this idyllic Swedish connection thriving on the northern door peninsula ! Tim's dad deepened the family roots when he acquired a small 36 ' sailboat so the whole crew could recreate on the summer waters of Lake Michigan. I was first invited to join Tim and his family eight years later on one of their vacations when I was 17 and we were newly sweet-hearted . Now 40 years later after thousands of all weather hikes on Hotz trail, hundreds of good beach days at Newport and countless cold water life changing swims, we have the honor of caring for a few special vacation homes in Northern Door including our own. No matter where we lived throughout our life, or how life was unfolding, neither of us have ever missed a summer vacation in the gentle woods of northern door. We honor and are protective of the delicate escarpment land, we respect the long time year round family residents who have kept the peninsula alive in the winter and we admire the hard working perennial business owners that make door county so naturally welcoming . We relish our days in northern door, enjoying the lingering springs, cooler restorative summer weather and inspiring magnificent fall colors. Being close to such a rare clean fresh body of water we consider a luxury. We feel blessed to have been supported by our families, friends and community throughout life's progression. Now to be able to recreate our own door county home haven experience to share with our loved one and an expanded community is a privilege. We live six months of the year in our sweet meadow home on Hill Road in Sister Bay. Our MadisonWI Profile We became the second owners of the Chamberlain house in 1991, caring for this now 100 year old house in the heart of Madison's historic district has been an experience of on going culture building for our family over the decades.... After being relatively light on our feet for nearly a decade after college, we returned to our home town married with two babies girls needing a nest. We knew we wanted to live near the grandparents and began our search! The Chamberlain house was listed for just one day in the newspaper and somehow I managed to persuade the owner over the phone to let me walk through. He had pulled the ad because he realized the house was not ready to show. It had become a rental property over the years with little to no maintenance, suffice it to say the house had lost its sparkle. I specifically remember my mother in law at the time saying after her tour, “I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.” From the street, the aging dark brown paint job, the falling off gutters and gapping whole under the front porch stood out like a sore thumb in this tidy historic residential neighborhood. I was drawn in by the rustic street appeal, sitting there weathered on this sweet little raise in the land, this 80 years old house charmed me and called out for care. Right off the bat, upon entering the screened porch, childhood memories of cloud watching for hours and day dreaming on the couch of my Gram's front porch in the UP were revived...... when we pushed open the solid oak front door we were met with waves of cat pee emanating from the gold shag carpet which shook me right out of my daydream. i imagined with ease that beneath the old soiled covering (which I immediately wanted to begin tearing out) was a protected hardwood floor. The smell was strong and begged to distract us from the rich patinated wood and leaded glass built-ins. The fact that there was no light shining through the windows didn’t help. I took the liberty of moving aside the sagging Mexican blanket covering the morning sun from streaming through the prominent east facing picture window. The sunshine lit the room up and as we walked through each room I was able to imagine it in its original splendor. The quality of the craftsmanship inspired me, some focused skilled crew built it back in 1915 for $4000.00. I began envisioning our family living under this roof.........twenty nine years later, several dozen home repair projects completed (including even before we moved in a complete rewiring of the entire electric system of the house) it became a home base to our three amazing daughters, a fervent partnership, four beloved border collies, many regal cats, ancient friendships, countless family gatherings, and thousands of shared delicious meals. Today we continue the tradition of deepening our home base and culture by welcoming in folks from all walks of life and from all parts of the world.

We are family oriented, love the summer in door county, tending to our garden and always have a project or three going. We like to get to Newport Beach daily with our dogs and swim the lakes. The nearest beach is just a three minutes drive to Sand Bay Beach, this beach is great sunrise beach and perfect for small children because it has a long shallow soft sand entrance. We also hike the Hotz trails in Newport State Park and love the beautiful sandy beach. We relish the quiet offered by the meadow life at all times of the day and try to take in the sunsets daily. We have a small gathering hearth in the meadow where we sit and wait for the evening choir to comes alive as saloon time. We respect and appreciate the privacy of our guests.

Directions ***If you are driving north on 57 ( the lake side option instead of HWY 42 the bay side option) you turn right on Old Stage Road before you reach SIster Bay . This road is a main central road on the northern peninsula between Sister Bay ( Hwy 42 ) and County road ZZ. You can either take Old Stage or County road ZZ to Hill Road. if your are on Old Stage take a right to get to our property, if you are on ZZ and come to Hill Road take a left.
