Lavis grew next the Avisio River, from which it draws its name. From its original, historic nucleus located at the foot of the "Paion" hill with its narrow streets called "pristoi", the hamlet soon expanded in the direction of the national roads of Brennero and Cembra as well as along the slopes of the hills towards Pressano. Today, Lavis is an important farming and commercial town, in part as a result of its closeness to Trento and the industrial area of the Piana Rotaliana.
Numerous Roman coins and barbarian tombs have been discovered here, proof that Lavis has always been - since ancient times - used to ford the Avisio. For several centuries, the town acted as a sort of "terminal" for wood, which was carried to town by the waters of the river, along which several deposits (channels called "vodi") and sawmills were found.
Sights in the area include the archbishop's church of S. Udalrico from 1450, which stands at the foot of the westernmost slope of the Dos Palon, the Casa Schuldhaus with its ostentatiously decorated ashlar-worked portal and the small Baroque church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno, while the inimitable hanging gardens of Ciuciòi - with their stairways, dungeons, protective walls and small castle - are found on the porphyry crag above.
by airplane:Verona "Valerio Catullo" (90 Km). It is the closest large airport to Trentino. Trento can then be reached by car in about an hour on the A22 motorway. There are daily flight connections with Rome, Palermo, Catania, Cagliari, Bari, Naples as well as with other main European cities. It is serviced by major airlines such as Alitalia, Air Italy, Air France, British Airways and Meridiana Fly. An aerobus shuttle service to train station in Verona is available every day of the week leaving every twenty minutes from the airport. Several car-rental companies are also present in the airport.
by train: Arriving in Trentino by train is a convenient option as it avoids worrying about motorway traffic conditions or snow related issues in winter.
The main towns of the province, Trento and Rovereto, are reached by Italian and European long-distance trains and both stations are close to their respective town centres. From these stations you can reach other resorts using the provincial transport network (see "Travelling in Trentino") offering local train and bus services that reach all the towns in the province.
At Christmas, special trains are available to reach the traditional Christmas markets.
Trentino is easily reached by car, motorbike and camper-caravan. The A22 Brennero-Modena motorway (European road E45) connects Germany and Austria to north Italy and runs through the whole province. Trento can be reached in 3hrs 30min from Munich (337 km) and in 2hrs from Innsbruck (176 km).
The A22 is also connected to the A1 Milan-Naples (for those arriving from the south) and to the A4 Milan-Venice (for those arriving from east or west). National roads (Strade Statali, S.S.) branch off from motorway exits and lead to each town or resort.
There are numerous road signs that also indicate prominent historic and artistic attractions, local food specialties and the most renowned ski resorts. A capillary road network connects the centre of Trento to every valley.
In Italy, motorway tolls are calculated on the distance travelled and are paid at the exit tollbooths.
Speed is limited to 130 km/h (80 mph) on motorways, 110 km/h (68 mph) on national roads (strade statali), 90 km/h (55 mph) on secondary rural and local rural roads, and 50 km/h (31 mph) on urban roads.
Road conditions are perfect year round, even in winter, as a large fleet of snowploughs are always on hand to free the entire road network from snow and ice when needed. From 15 November 2012 to 15 April 2013, all cars must have snow-tyres or carry snow-chains aboard.
The whole region has a large network of equipped rest areas and parking sites for camper-caravans (over 140, a record in Italy), confirming Trentino as a "camper friendly" region.
