We love our cozy nest at the back of an old home in the historic district, just 2 blocks from downtown. Decorated in our favorite style (uncluttered cottage charm) with heirloom furniture and lots of sunlight, it's perfect for 2 but can sleep 4 thanks to a queen size sofa bed in the living room. The bathroom is accessed through the upstairs bedroom, so for parties of 4, it's best if you are pretty comfortable with each other. We use minimally scented, eco-friendly cleaning products.
The house was built in the early 1860s, and we think the back annex may have been added a bit later for a maid or mother-in-law. The layout of the Roost is a one-up, one-down configuration, with the living room and kitchen on the main floor, and the bedroom and bathroom on top.
Servicios y zonas comunes
With this full apartment rental, you'll have a private entrance through a 3-season porch, a storage shed off the porch for bikes, etc, an outdoor deck off the upstairs bedroom, plus a patio table and four chairs for summer backyard dining under the apple tree.
Atención a los huéspedes
We live right next door and will be happy to greet you when you arrive if you prefer, but most often we'll just leave the door unlocked and the key on the counter so you can check in on your own schedule. You'll find information inside about Decorah but feel free to ask us anything!
Otros aspectos destacables
We've set check-in and check-out times based on the time we need to clean between guests. If we don't have other guests right before or after your visit, we are happy to have you arrive early or stay through the day! Just ask.
The Roost is one of three apartments in the house. Your neighbors are our friendly year-round tenants and we ask that you keep voices and music at a reasonable volume after 10pm on weeknights, 11pm on weekends.
No pets and no smoking please.
I'm originally from the SF Bay Area and am now happily rooted in this beautiful corner of northeast Iowa. My husband Mark works for admissions at Luther College, Simon is in college at Lewis & Clark in Portland, OR, and I'm a freelance theatre person. We love our local organic food scene, cooking, and eating. We love old houses, vintage and repurposed stuff, and creating cozy spaces. Ask Mark (a 5th generation local) about Decorah and he'll delight in telling you the best place to get a cocktail, take a hike, or look for antiques. I like that too, but am more likely to strike up a conversation about Shakespeare, kids and the arts, or what's playing in regional theatres these days.
