Nestled in the remote crofting hamlet of Skerray and a stone's throw from the magnificent Torrisdale beach, Between the Rocks and the Sea is a wonderful base to explore the North Highlands and Islands. With a log burner in the sitting room, a unique dining room with an oil fired rayburn, rustic features, two cosy double bedrooms with oil fired heating, 2 lovely shared bathrooms ( one with a free standing bath and the other with a bath and electric shower) and a large private garden, you can really relax here. There is Wifi available but mobile phone signal is pretty much non-existent. We run a veggie/vegan pop up cafe and events including yoga nidra and ecotherapy, please check our website for more information.
We can cater evening meals. Let us know if you would like this option when you book and we will confirm availability. All food is vegetarian, let us know if you are vegan and/or have other dietary requirements.
The area of Skerray is wonderful walking country with sea cliffs, hills, moorland and beaches and big skies, you may even be lucky enough to see the northern lights! We are about an hour from Durness and 50 minutes from Thurso where you can get a boat to the Orkney Islands. Our closest mountain is Ben Loyal, about 10 miles away.

You have access to your bedroom, a shared bathroom upstairs (shared with one other bed and breakfast room), another shared bathroom downstairs a cosy lounge with a log burner, a gorgeous rustic dining room and large private garden with a picnic table. Sorry but we do not offer self catering for bed and breakfast guests. We can cater evening meal and also make up packed lunches at an extra cost.

Andy and/or Lauren will be around at times during the day and evening to welcome you and share information about the area.
We live next door in our cottage which we are currently renovating.
If the pop up events are on, you are very welcome to join in and to chat more with us and the locals and other visitors to the area. We often cater evening meal which is veggie/vegan and delicious! If you would like to check evening meal availability, please get in touch.

This is a very remote, wild area with just a few settlements dotted along the coast and through the hills. There are places to eat and drink along the north coast as you explore the wonderful area. The beaches along the north coast are stunning, we love our local beach called Torrisdale, but there are many others as well as small harbours such as Talmine. Heading east, you can visit Castle Varrich in Tongue and drive across the Kyle on your way to Loch Eribol and Durness where you can visit Smoo caves. Beyond there, the wonderful Assynt geopark awaits you! Heading east from Between the Rocks and the Sea, you can explore Strathy point, the Orkney islands (take a ferry from Scrabster), the Castle and Gardens of Mey (previously owned by the late Queen mother), Dunnet Head (the most northerly point of mainland Britain), Wick and Castle Sinclair and the intriguing Hill O' Many Stanes. If you enjoy swimming but the sea is too cold, there is a swimming pool, gym, sauna and jacuzzi just 10 miles away in Bettyhill, our local village. Bettyhill is also home to the Strathnaver museum and you can drive the Strathnaver trail and learn about the highland clearances. Heading south from Between the Rocks and the Sea, you can visit places such as Helmsdale, Balblair forest, Dunrobin castle, Inverness (capital of the Highlands) and Fort George. And of course, for keen walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, the area has more than a lifetime of opportunities for you to explore. Puffins, Cormorants, Guillemots, Oyster catchers, eider ducks, pine martens (if you are lucky), otters, deer...the possibilities for spotting wildlife are endless and there are often guided walks run by the ranger service which you can access. Why not climb Ben Loyal, one of our closest most prominent mountains if you are a keen hiker?

You can park outside Between the Rocks and the Sea. There is space for several vehicles. The nearest train station is Thurso, about 30 miles away. You can get a train to Thurso from Inverness. There is a bus once a week that runs from Thurso to Skerray and Skerray to Thurso, please contact the bus company for up to date information. Many people cycle the north coast either from Thurso or Durness and you are welcome to bring a bike and store it in our barn. Our nearest airport is Inverness airport, a short bus ride from town. You can hire a car from the airport and the drive here is anything from 2.5-3.5 hours depending on whether you take the inland route or the coastal road (recommended in the winter). If you are travelling here by car, you can follow the sat nav BUT please note that it will take you to a location just south of Between the Rocks and the Sea. If you are coming from Bettyhill, once you go past Borgie lodge hotel, DO NOT turn up towards Torrisdale but carry on along the road, past the cemetery on the right and keep going. You will see the old church on the right and Between the Rocks and the Sea is almost directly opposite on the left of the road. If you are coming from Tongue, stay on the road towards Bettyhill (A836), do not take the first Skerray turning but keep on until you reach a turning on you left which will take you past the Borgie lodge hotel. Once you go past Borgie lodge hotel, DO NOT turn up towards Torrisdale but carry on along the road, past the cemetery on the right and keep going. You will see the old church on the right and between the Rocks and the sea is almost directly opposite on the left of the road.

We are quite remote but there are a few local shops and amenities within 10 miles of Between the Rocks and the Sea. Our nearest large town is Thurso, about 30 miles away. our nearest local shops are in Tongue and Bettyhill, about 10 miles away. Children are welcome here. There is an extra charge for a child staying in your room, please contact for more information or with any queries.
