Beautifully decorated-well equipped stone cottage with wood burner set in a 50 acre private nature reserve with lake. Woodland and riverside walks, or cycle (borrow our bikes), Dartmoor, Fingle Woods. Excellent walking, biking, horse riding, golf, wildlife, best wild swim spot in South West, games barn.

Mardon is accessed via a stable door into a lounge with woodburning stove and dining area, a separate well equipped kitchen and a cloakroom with shower and toilet on the ground level. There is a TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs. A DAB radio which connects via bluetooth to your ipad/iphone enables you to bring your own music on holiday with you. There is an OS map in the bookcase so you can plan your walks in the local area and not get lost in the 45km of recently opened paths in Fingle Woods.

Upstairs there is one double bedroom and one triple bedroom, and a family bathroom with a bath. The triple bedroom has stairs up to a mezanine level. This is an ideal play area for older children or younger children under supervision, since it is accessed up steep stairs (there is a stair gate at the bottom). All beds have pocket sprung mattresses as we know from experience how an uncomfortable mattress can spoil your holiday.

The well equipped kitchen includes electric cooker, fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster and Nespresso Machine with complimentary coffee pods. There is access from the kitchen via a stable door to a south-facing private fenced garden with paved area and garden furniture. A bird feeder just outside the lounge window attracts a wide range of birds to the garden.

A new district biomass central heating and hot water system, alongside double glazing throughout and a woodburner make the cottage extremely cosy.

The cottage is beautifully decorated and all soft furnishings are home made, making it a really relaxing space. There are plenty of areas to relax in outside. You can relax in the private garden and watch the many birds that come to the feeder, you can take a stroll or sit on one the benches by the lake, walk up Sunny bank field to watch the sun set. Play table tennis/snooker/table football in the rustic games barn.

Space for children to explore, make dens, games barn or large undercover barn for wet weather play.

A communal washing machine is also available for use.

Guests are welcome to wander around the lake and the 50 acres of private Nature Reserve at Clifford Barton. There is also a washing room with washing machine. Guests also are welcome to use the games barn with table tennis table, snooker table, table football, a rustic piano and a stage for any budding actors/actresses.

We have a bike pool of kids and adult bikes which guests are welcome to borrow (there is a great cycle along a track next to the River Teign to a riverside pub). We don't have helmets and other safety equipment so please bring your own.

We are very happy to help plan walks, trips etc and are on site to help in any way we can.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful wooded Teign Valley on Dartmoor - a stone throw from the National Trust's Fingle Woods (850 hectares of ancient woodland - footpaths, wildlife haven, mountain biking), Clifford Barton is surrounded by 50 acres of woodland with stunning 2 acre lake (½ mile away), which you are welcome to wander around and enjoy. Rustic games barn (table tennis, snooker and table football). 4 miles down river from Drewsteignton. Short walk to Dunsford Nature Reserve at Steps Bridge, spring daffodils, riverside walks to Castle Drogo, riverside pub. Great pubs for food and beer. Wonderful for wildlife and birdwatching, cycling. The best wild swimming spot in the South West. Three golf courses within 5 miles. Exeter, 8 miles.

A kids paradise with space to be outside, build dens play in the games barn. Miniature Pony Centre nearby. Haldon Forest- go ape, rent bikes, bike trails and skills area.

A taxi from Exeter station costs approx £20.

Once here there are great walks onto Dartmoor, Fingle and Dunsford Woods from the doorstep. There is not a shop close by (the nearest medium sized co-op is in Moretonhampstead which is 8 mins drive away), however Sainsburies, Waitrose and Tesco all deliver here.

The cottage is very well equipped with plenty of pots, utensils, microwave, fridge freezer. We are on hand in case there is anything you might need for your stay. There is also a nespresso coffee machine.

The cottage also has a radio/speaker that you can bluetooth music to from your device.

We have a small library of wildlife identification books, local interest books, maps, walk books and mountain biking guide books.

We had a fantastic two night stay. Vicki and her family were incredibly friendly, helpful hosts, and the area was beautiful and tranquil - perfect for a weekend away from the city. The house was decorated in a way that made it feel exceptionally homely and cosy and the woodburning stove was fantastic to have on a cold February evening.

Can really recommend staying here - we hired all the accommodation for a big family event and it was so lovely that no-one wanted to leave for the whole long weekend. The attention to detail in terms of colour schemes, decoration, lighting, tiling, kitchen ware is outstanding, it has just the right balance of comfortable homeliness and beauty. Everywhere was clean, everything worked, the grounds are absolutely stunning and the dog owners in the family came across deer on a walk one morning. Every member of the family, age range 0 - 60, and city dwellers to country bumpkins, loved it, not one negative comment from anyone for the whole three days - well done Vicki and family you have worked really hard to create a beautiful place for people to stay and it was really really appreciated

What a beautiful, tranquil and friendly place! We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay. A great base for exploring the area...we received a warm welcome from the hosts and felt very much at home. The cottage was immaculate and had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend and already planning our next stay!

Had the most wonderful stay at the cottage!! It was an oasis unto itself! Stayed here two nights while attending a wedding in Dartmoor. My friends and I all adored the cottage and didn't want to leave! Would love to come back!

We chose to stay at Clifford Barton because it's located in a particularly beautiful part of Dartmoor, and we wanted to do some walking. We had a wonderful, relaxing few days. The directions to the cottage were clear and accurate (don't use GPS for the last bit! Follow the written instructions!!) We liked not having to stick to a specific arrival time - you never know what the traffic will be doing, so it was great to have a bit of flexibility. Vicki and Gavin are really kind, welcoming hosts and we felt at home immediately. It was so lovely, on walking in, to find a home-made Victoria sponge on the dining table! Vicki had mentioned in the pre-arrival information that several supermarkets do deliveries, and it's probably a good idea to take advantage of this as it's a bit of a drive to the nearest shops. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean, with plenty of light, and an airy feel, and just as described on the website. The furniture and equipment was modern and comfortable, as were the beds, and the linens were of good quality. There was plenty of hot water in the two bathrooms, one of which had a shower, and the other, a bath. The Wifi worked fine. There were many places to see in the area and things to do, and there were bikes that we could borrow any time we liked. It's a great place for families - there's a whole games room in the old barn! Clifford Barton is within easy access of riverside and high moor walks, fabulous old villages such as Chagford, great Dartmoor pubs, and only 30 minutes' drive from Exeter with its cathedral and shops. We're really glad we stayed at Clifford Barton and can't recommend it highly enough.

Myself, my husband Gavin and 3 kids live at Clifford Barton. We fell in love with the place in the summer of 2013, as a wonderful location to raise our family. Having renovated the 3 cottages to a high standard, we are delighted to invite others to come and enjoy the peace and quiet and rich natural environment that this part of the Country has to offer. We manage the 50 acres of woodland, meadows, lake and ponds for wildlife and its enjoyment. We are all on hand to help you make the most of your holiday and advise you of local walks, pubs, activities.
