Unplug, unwind, restore your senses at Clara's Cottage, a romantic, private, quiet garden retreat on the spectacular Mendocino Coast.
Clara's Cottage is located in Inglenook on several acres, just 10 minutes north of Fort Bragg in a unique microclimate with very little fog, tucked behind the MacKerricher dunes. Access to the dunes and MacKerricher State Beach is located at the end of our private lane. Clara’s Cottage is a small, warm space with lots of light and easily heated with a glass-front wood stove (firewood provided). The studio accommodates 2 with a firm queen-size bed. There is a well-equipped kitchenette for light food preparation. A Weber charcoal BBQ is available for use off the outside patio area. Clara’s Cottage has an indoor 1/2 bath and an outdoor claw foot tub/shower located in a serene and private garden setting (think hot tub, hot springs ambiance). Owners reside on the property and greet guests personally and enjoy making recommendations for restaurants, activities, hikes, etc. There are abundant opportunities for hiking, bird watching and beach-combing nearby. The cottage is equipped with excellent hiking and bicycling guidebooks. The cottage has no TV, phone or WIFI. Cell phone reception is spotty on the coast; internet cafes are located in town. NO PETS, NO SMOKING. Nightly rate includes 11% county bed tax. Guests are expected to have a high regard for personal property and leave the cottage in the condition it was found - there is no additional cleaning fee. There is a refundable security deposit. Check-in time is 3pm - 10pm; check-out is 11am.
  • Tenaya was an EXCELLENT host! The cottage was exactly as described and everything was so nice and clean! She really goes the extra mile by putting homade preserves and muffins in the fridge for guests. Tenaya made us feel even more welcomed when she stopped by the second day to make sure we were OK and had everything we needed to make our stay perfect! Tenaya was a great, warm and friendly host and we'll recommend Clara's cottage over and over again! We can't wait to go back!

  • It's the little things that make a vacation memorable, enjoyable, and relaxing. Clara's cottage has all those little things: from the beautiful outdoor bath--equipped with bath salts, bubbles, etc.--to the sugar cubes in the kitchen, everything about our stay here was comfortable and easy. Hunting for sand dollars is hardly a hunt on the nearby beach, and Tenaya's clear directions and recommendations will keep you from getting lost in the dunes! We were at the cottage in foggy, drizzly weather and enjoyed reading, games, eating, talking, and napping in the cottage, but the cottage is sure to be a delight during the sunny months as well because the garden has lots of little places to sit and smell the flowers, or fruit trees, and watch the birds. The nearby town of Fort Bragg is adorable, but there is really no reason to leave the cozy comfort of the secluded cottage--so we didn't! Maybe next time we'll get out and about in the surrounding area...or then again, maybe not. Our stay at Clara's cottage was a wonderful introduction to the Mendocino coast as well as Airbnb.

  • Tenaya and Ed were very gracious hosts. The cottage, outdoor bath and woodburning stove were fabulous. We could not have asked for a better way to spend our babymoon. Very romantic and secluded. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking to get away, decompress and unplug!

  • The best. Our third time here, and definitely won't be the last. Don't know what else we can add at this point, so just book already.

  • Arriving at Clara's cottage was a wonderful experience. Ed and Tenaya greeted us with a warm heartfelt welcome. This being our first Air BNB experience they were so helpful in explaining to us how everything works on the property. They gave us lots of suggestions of things that we might want to see and do during our visit. Upon entering the cottage it was evident that much thought and love went into the preparation for our stay. All our needs were anticipated for our stay and were met beyond our expectations. Ed and Tanaya exhibit a great love for the environment which was reflected in the garden setting and all the creatures that live there with them. The artistic flare that they have for creating a serene and peaceful environment was simply wonderful.

  • We never wanted to leave Clara's Cottage. My fiance and I came up here for a weekend. Here are some of our favorite perks: -It's only a 10-minute walk to the sand dunes and beach, complete with hammock overlooking the ocean. The beach is private - we didn't see another soul, but were accompanied by a whole flock of snowy plovers (an adorable threatened species of bird) -The outdoor shower is walled in by privacy fences and lush greenery. It feels like bathing in the secret garden! Tenaya provided bath salts and herbal shower gels...literally the best shower of my life. -There is a wood-burning stove inside of the bedroom. We stoked it in the mornings when we woke up to heat up the cottage - it gets warm very quickly and provides a lovely sputtering ambiance. Tenaya and Ed keep the wood flowing and even reset it when we were gone on Saturday. -Tenaya and Ed have really thought of every single detail. Everything that we forgot to bring was already in the cabin - matches, a flashlight, a really beautiful set of dishes for the kitchenette, big, soft fluffy towels. AND homemade jam and muffins were waiting for us when we first arrived. We made tea (also included) and had a delicious snack in the sun-filled front room. Seriously, one of the best weekend retreats we've had. Thank you!

  • great experience, really beautiful place. so peaceful. perfect for couples, real memorable and special getaway

  • Cozy, clean, enchanting cottage in a gorgeous, lush garden! The azaleas were in full bloom and hummingbirds were very present. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our Mother's Day/Birthday weekend here. This was our home base before and after riding the Skunk Train. Tenaya has thought of every possible amenity and Clara's Cottage has all the comforts of home. The bathtub/shower outside was a rugged, delightful treat for us, although someone more modest might be too shy to enjoy it. Bring plenty of bubble bath and bath oils! The hike through the sand dunes outside the property was great too! We will treasure the memory of our special time here and would certainly return again! Thank you Tenaya!! Upon your recommendation, we visited Hendy Woods State Park on the way home :)

Come to the wilderness and enjoy quiet, stars and beautiful views with plenty of wildlife. Our newly built apartment is a great place for a get away or a stop over. Cool nights and warm days are the norm in the summer, spring and fall. Winters can be rainy but there are days in the 70's. This apartment is upstairs. Be sure you can climb stairs before booking. 17 miles from Hwy 101
This 730 Sq Ft apartment is great for staying at our place and enjoying the golf, the lake, fishing, the views and going to the Redwoods. It is in our warehouse and although the entry has an industrial look, once you are inside you will feel cozy and at home. There is air conditioning for the summer and heating in the winter. The apartment is double insulated. Everything is included and you should find what you need for cooking and enjoying the space.
Wilderness beauty is all around you when you are here! Wildlife, views, quiet and stars are the main things in our neighborhood. We are surrounded by mountains and are at 1500 feet elevation. The atmosphere is rural. All of the land around us is privately owned. Please stay on the main roads or our property. Closest grocery store is in Covelo about 14 miles away on a winding road. Takes about 1/2 hour. Best to get supplies in Willits on your way up to our place. There is a restaurant in Covelo called the North
  • Came here with my fiancée and our dog and it was a wonderful experience. Diane's and Franks ranch is very secluded in the wilderness and makes it very nice to get away from our busy lives. I enjoyed fishing for bass in the lake and we took a few day trips to the redwoods and fort Bragg. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet retreat surrounded by wildflife.

  • Great home. Had a blackout due to a fallen tree but they assisted quickly

  • A beautiful and idyllic property. A great place if you want to get away and be off the grid.

    Dwayne2017-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for a place to get away from it all, Diane's place is it! Tucked away, clean, comfy and remote and comes with a lake where you can boat and fish as much as you like. The apartment is lovely, well furnished and works for a family. Plenty of wildlife around. A true break and Diane is such a lovely host.

    George2017-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Diane's house is great! The apartment is peaceful and close to nature and the neighborhood is quiet and friendly. The house is big enough for a family with five people and is great place for vacations.

    Cameron2017-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend the place and its amenities. The ladies in the party thought that the apartment would be especially appropriate for a couple with two or three children who wanted to get away for the weekend, Kitchen worked well and in general it was a very pleasant weekend.

    Eric2017-06-25T00:00:00Z
  • Diane was super responsive and helpful. The location is nice as it's equidistant (90 mins) between Mendocino/Fort Bragg and places farther north like Avenue of the Giants. The house itself was clean and comfortable. From speaking with Diane, she is willing and able to accommodate a variety of group sizes - we had 6 in one apartment and 2 in an adjoining apartment. Only one bathroom to share among us but it wasn't a problem. All in all, great trip for our group!

    Sruti2017-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a place to jump off the grid for a few days. This is the place to do it. Serenity and beauty abound. You will have a comfortable place to lie your head and cook your meals. Let nature provide the entertainment. Deer, rabbits, birds, ducks, and an occassional frog will be all of the background noise you will hear. You may get lucky enough to see a few wild pigs, with piglets! I loved our stay.

Comfortable private guest unit, two-story, full kitchen and full bathroom downstairs, loft bedroom and one large bedroom with propane fireplace upstairs. Beautiful setting, marshland view, birds and wildlife, gorgeous sunsets, quiet nights, fresh air and only 8 miles from downtown. Perfect for a relaxing, creative getaway!
Our hilltop ranch is one of the most beautiful spots in the area. We're located just eight miles northwest of downtown, seven miles out a two lane paved country road, across a single-lane bridge, with the last one mile stretch of dirt road leads visitors up the mountain to our private heaven. There's plenty of nature here! The rugged environment of natural sights and sounds will renew your spirit with fresh air, plentiful wildlife (watch for wild turkeys and deer on the road!), lush forest surroundings and wide open meadows. This is a place to relax and let the pressures of life disappear. Our twenty-two acres offers a place for you to breathe deeply, enjoy the view and take nature walks out multiple private roads that meander through the hills. Land parcels here are twenty to forty acres, so neighbors are a distance away yet near enough to create a neighborhood feeling. Our ranch was home to sixteen sheep before we turned it into a horse ranch for our daughter who now has her own ranch. The arena, round pen and horse stalls are still here but aren't used unless horses are hauled in, which isn't often. We call the guest unit where you'll stay the "barn apartment". It's located in our big red barn building where the sheep and horses used to live. Twelve years ago, we converted the animal spaces into a woodworking shop and art studio and remodeled the pre-existing apartment. Since then, family and friends have enjoyed staying in the barn apartment, and now we're sharing it with visitors like you. The woodworking shop and art studio are our private work spaces which we don't share. Our place is one of the last parcels here on the power grid, so electricity is available in the apartment. Our water comes from our well and we have a start-of-the-art filtration system. We collect rain water and store it to insure sufficient water for our needs, and our water system processes fresh, clean water into our home. You'll see several of our water tanks when you turn the corner to our ranch. The apartment is private and quiet, has its own entrance porch and carport parking space. The interior has tile flooring throughout and a large tile shower. The kitchen area contains a full double-oven range, microwave, small built-in refrigerator, toaster, electric coffee brewer and water heater. There is dining space for four and a round folding table where you can sit and enjoy the view while eating, relaxing or working. The stairway leads to a loft bedroom and one large bedroom with propane fireplace upstairs. Both have comfortable queen size beds. One bed is a Bamboo brand, an eco-friendly mattress made completely of natural bamboo, which is topped with a 2" foam memory pad, and the other is a Casper mattress, one of the best memory foam mattresses on the market. Both beds will provide you with a good night's sleep, comfortable rest and rejuvenation. Each bed is made up with fresh soft white linens and pillows to add to your comfort. WIFI is available here on Satellite. Due to our rural location our connection isn't high speed, but it is fast enough for basic online needs. For our guests who enjoy media, we installed a new TV plus a DVD player to watch movies, and a small library of books if you want to curl up and read. Electronic devices work here for email and texting, however, most cell phone services are spotty or don't work at all. Your guest apartment is professionally cleaned and the kitchen includes bottled water, Starbucks ground coffee, breakfast teas, muffins and fruit (seasonal fruit), a few sodas and snack foods, four dinner place settings and utensils, paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, kitchen utensils and cutting board. Our ranch has become a popular destination for friends and family who travel here each year, many from throughout the US and Europe. Everyone enjoys the fresh, natural, rugged environment, local amenities and unique community. We live a different lifestyle, and you will enjoy a much-needed break from fast-paced city living. Mendocino County is rich with plentiful local wineries, breweries, artisan shops, arts and crafts. We are located centrally so you may visit the Giant Redwoods to the north, the gorgeous northern California coast to the west, dozens of wineries to the south and the San Joaquin valley to the east, all within an hour drive. Locally, our small town offers several eateries, many family-owned, and some with organic, natural and vegan choices, as well as small old-fashioned restaurants and fast food favorites. We welcome guests from Europe and are fluent in German and French, as well as conversational Italian.
Our neighborhood is the forest and open meadows divided into 20 to 40 acre parcels. The natural surroundings are rugged and full of wildlife. Our place is remote yet close enough to town to shop or eat out.
  • We absolutely loved our stay at Joy & Burt's place. Everything was as advertised, and the apartment was very well stocked with snacks, drinks and cookware. We came to the area to check it out, as work with the power company may be bringing us that way. Joy & Burt took time in the morning to talk with us about the areas and provide lots of insight, it was so helpful! They are an amazing couple and a joy (no pun intended) to be around. Both have lived amazing and interesting lives and we very much enjoyed talking with them over Espresso. Upon arrival we were greeted by Tommy, the white cat. Easily the friendliest, coolest cat I have had the pleasure of hanging out with. We even got a very light bit of snow as we were getting ready to leave, the property is beautiful!

    Kenneth2017-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Joy, Burt and family are amazing! THANK YOU! You're such a good people! It was a good choice stopping by their ranch and enjoying of one night and an outstanding breakfast together! Difficult to beat their hospitality. We only feel sorry to spend only one night with them. If we ever have another chance to pass by Willits we will repeat for sure, no doubt! The cottage was perfect and beyond our expectations. Nice deco, clean and all in the right place. Internet it was a little bit slow but actually we think this is even better to really enjoy the stay. We hope to come back soon!!

  • Joy and Burt were wonderful hosts. We arrived late at night, they still gave us a very warm welcome. There were even muffins and fruit waiting for us. The cottage is simply wonderful: cozy, stylish, and pleasantly light. The hosts think really of everything: food, drinks, toiletries. There was a toothbrush and toothpaste in the bathroom which made us really happy since we had forgotten to bring one. First thing in the morning we saw deers, wild turkeys, and of course the cat Timmy waiting to be petted. We left after a gourmet breakfast and a stimulating conversation with our wonderful hosts. Highly recommended!

    Aleksandra2016-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • I've stayed at TONs of Airbnb's and this way BY FAR one of my absolute favorite stays. Joy and Burt are one of the warmest (and coolest!) couples I have ever encountered. We absolutley loved staying at their relaxing barn in Willits and getting to chat with them about their life stories and epic romance was a bonus. In terms of the home: the kitchen was packed with more snacks than we could have asked for and everything was 1000% clean. We had a great time just relaxing, being in nature, and watching movies from their FANTASTIC DVD collection. I've already told 3 friends about this place and can't wait to come back to hang with Joy & Burt in the future. Definitely a great place to relax and recharge.

    Jessica2016-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • This was one of the most beautiful and comfortable Airbnb experiences we ever had (and we had many!) Joy and Burt are extremely friendly and caring people! They were impeccable in every detail as hosts and very nice, open and loving people. We had great conversations, shared a bottle of wine and morning coffee and overall felt like long time friends The location is wonderful - you are as close to nature as you can possibly be and yet just a few miles from highway 101. It is a very good overnight spot on the way from Bay Area to Mendocino. We also stopped at Vichy Hot Springs on the way just 40 minutes from Joy and Burt house, spending times in tubs where Jack London, Mark Twain, Elton John and other celebrities soaked The house is very nice and comfortable, very warm even in the cold night. And it was great to seat by the window and watch wild turkeys on the hill and hawks and vultures flying by

  • My wife and I traveled to Willits, CA for the Labor Day weekend and we couldn't be happier with our hosts and their property. It was a pleasure to meet Joy and Burt and it was certainly a pleasure to stay in their beautiful red barn. It turned out to be exactly as depicted on the website, with wonderful views. All was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Everything about the experience was first class. Joy and Burt were the sweetest people, very kind, welcoming, hospitable and ready to help, and answer all of our questions about the area and places to visit. If we ever go back to Willits again we will definitely stay on their ranch. Joy and Burt, thank you for the wonderful experience!!!

    Timothy2017-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Joy & Burt are fabulous hosts. This stay was a major highlight of a fantastic trip. The apartment is very spacious, modern, clean, and well equipped with all sorts of amenities. The property is gorgeous and serene. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and provided a nice tour of the facilities and made to feel extremely welcome and taken care of. It is a nice, short, pleasant drive to Willits which has plenty of dining and take out options. We felt like we had all of the privacy we could want but especially enjoyed getting to know our hosts a little better. Absolutely wonderful people in a wonderful place. Highest recommendation.

    Burt2016-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was an experience! We (3 adults) live in a city so arriving onto Joy & Burt's property was more refreshing than we expected. What made it so refreshing was: helpful directions to locate the tucked away property, incredibly bright stars due to the distance from city lights, the absolute and genuine friendliness and hospitality of Joy & Burt (and Tommy the cat), the comfort of the bed and bedding, the availability of kitchen amenities (as well as tea and coffee makers and a mini fridge), no traffic sounds, the views from their property, snacks available, a flip switch fire place, conversation with Joy and Burt (the list could go on!). We had an unexpected and utterly delightful conversation with Joy and Burt before our departure in the morning and feel as if we were treated with such kindness. We all left feeling satisfied, grateful, and ready to return again soon. We truly enjoyed our stay.

  • Heather was very welcome and her place is the perfect little gateway from the city, it's very quiet and secluded and still you have all you need. We'll come back for sure!

    Erika2016-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is the place to go to get in tune with yourself and nature. The co -op kitchen is a great space as well. Heather is an awesome host. Highly recommended to those seeking beauty and solitude.

    Gail2017-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • This was by far the best mini-vacation my wife and I have ever had. The cabin was the perfect little retreat in the woods with only the basics but everything we needed. Heather was super-gracious as a host and gave an amazing tour of the property. She has done a lot of great work on the property and it shows! Feels like new inside and has all the charm you could ask for. Outside has the perfect rustic feel for being so far out in the woods. This place is almost certainly going to turn into a hotspot once word gets out. My wife and I went on this vacation for star gazing, kayaking, and fishing. This location was perfect for all of them! The polo field is just down the hill and incredibly easy to access. Tons of room to set up the telescope and enjoy the sights! Lake Pillsbury was a very short drive and absolutely no trouble to get to. It's so out of the way that you can very easily find a place to be alone with a little paddling. So, so looking forward to coming back soon.

    Kevin2016-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying here! Super cozy cabin, comfy, nice and warm, and everything was set up for our arrival. We loved exploring the lake every day, and caught plenty of fish. The woods are really beautiful, and although the location is remote it's a beautiful drive the whole way. Heather and her boyfriend are super nice, helpful and friendly and her dogs are super sweet. We loved being able to bring our dog too, who had a blast sniffing around and playing. I would definitely recommend the ranch for a quiet trip away from the city, or for anyone who's into hiking, fishing, hunting, stargazing or anything in the outdoors (but with hot showers!) And no wifi or cell reception were definitely a plus for us! Thanks Heather for everything, we would love to come back some time!

    sofia2016-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • Heather was a great host. The lodge was fun and cozy and the co-op kitchen was easy to access. She gave us all the information we needed to have a enjoyable stay and a easy un-rushed checkout. Very welcoming to our dog and chinchilla. The cabin is a 15-20 min drive to Lake Pillbury Resort and it was nice go back to a nice quiet cabin from large groups of people and families. Would love to stay on that lookout lodge once it gets set up!

    Daniel2017-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful place. The cabin was somehow both very rustic and very comfortable. It is really remote, an hour away from cell phone service, and part of the drive is on a dirt road. Heather provides careful directions and instructions, review and follow them carefully to have a good experience.

    Susan2017-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • My weekend at the Madrone Cabin was exactly as I had hoped: perfectly serene and scenic. A weekend at this spot is more than worth the drive from the East Bay.

1905 Craftsman home built for the president of the Union Lumber Company almost entirely of Redwood. The was the first house in Willits to have electricity. You will be stepping back in time with hosts who have traveled the world. You will be welcomed
1905 Craftsman home built for the president of the Union Lumber Company. The house was built to show off the uses of redwood and each room was done differently. We have been working to restore it to its original elegance. It is a little bit of a museum of the period. It is beautiful to step back in time and yet feel comfortable. The room is a large downstairs bedroom with private bath. There is also a private room off the master bedroom with an addition double bed, sink, and refrigerator. We provide an amazing assortment of tea and coffee. We have spent many years traveling the world and love to talk travel. Our goal is to share the same hospitality we have found in our travels. Willits is the gateway to the redwoods, just north of the wine country and 1 hour to the Mendocino coast. We are located in the center of town within a short walk to everything. The house is 5000 sq. ft. and has a big kitchen. We will do as much as possible to make it feel like your home. Our favorite part of hosting is meeting people. We are happy to talk about what to see in Mendocino County or any other part of the world. This is the premier street to live on in Willits. Quite neighborhood a few minutes from downtown
Redwood Ave is a wide tree lined street where we stand outside and talk to neighbors. It is a short walk to shops, restaurants, theater and parks. Willits is home to a great local museum, Roots of Power where there is a fantastic collection of working steam engines, the Skunk train, and the Willits Rodeo 4th of July week. The local pub always has live music.
  • Peter could not have been more helpful or accommodating. His home is located within walking distance of restaurants. We arrived late but were able to find a Chinese restaurant still open and enjoyed a nice dinner. The rooms are spacious and very clean with a very comfortable bed and mini fridge. This was our first Airbnb stay and couldn't have been more pleasant.

  • Heidi was a great host- she shared her food with us, and although we couldn't meet Peter, he was kind enough to buy coffee especially for us! Pros: -Room is very spacious with a nice ensuite bathroom (pictures don't do it justice). -House is very large and has lots of shared spaces. -They have every form of coffee maker possible, we had delicious espresso and a latte made from Thanksgiving Coffee company, thanks! Cons: -Front and side balconies are very cluttered with old things which make them difficult to use, and backyard is still a work in progress, so your use is mostly limited to inside the house. I'm sure once they are done with the remodeling, both indoors and outdoors will be amazing!

  • We love coming back to stay with Peter and Heidi! They are model AirBnB hosts, thoughtful and considerate of our needs and full of amazing, fascinating stories! The beautiful, historic, museum-like Redwood Manor is icing on the cake!

  • Peter and Heidi are the warmest and kindest hosts you could ask for. Very attentive and helpful. Check-in was perfect. The room is quite spacious, comfortable and decorated well. The bathroom is large with great water pressure. The bed is fabulous. The room had drinks and snacks. Very conveniently located and parking is no problem. Great stay. Great host. Great room. Fabulous deal. Highly recommended.

  • We really enjoyed staying at Peter's historic home. He has put a lot of work and care restoring the old house to its former beauty. If you like antique furniture and interesting artifacts from all over the world you will love this place. Our living quarters were very roomy, comfy and clean. There is a separate kitchenette with a refrigerator and some nice snacks like fresh fruit, organic yougurt, cookies, coffee etc... Peter was a great host all around and made us feel very much at home during our short stay.

  • Lovely faithful recreation of an Arts and Crafts movement house with all home comforts (good beds and bathroom) and not a stuffy museum! We enjoyed talking with the family and sharing experiences. The residential area is small town with walkable choice of restaurants ( we ate at Szechuan with livee music even on a Sunday evening). We would be very happy to return and explore the coast and Russian River from Peter's place. Lovely family.

Studio North is a modern 400 sqft studio. This large room has loads of natural light, and offers a Sustainable lifestyle experience with a solar powered, full kitchen, grey water, and a composting toilet. There is no TV in the room. The private shower room always has plenty of hot water and a supply of fresh, fluffy towels. We built a grey water system so your shower water is helping my fruit trees in the summer!
Escape the city and find peace and quiet in the village of Willits. Studio North is situated in a charming and quiet neighborhood. The street is wide and a series of huge redwood trees are out your front door. Lot of quiet, beautiful walking areas nearby. Permaculture garden in development on-site and a separate entrance for your privacy. Ample parking on our safe village street. A queen sized bed is in place, additional single air bed can be added upon request. Please be sure to let me know to add this bed before your arrival. $12 charge for each person beyond 2 guests. "Country ventilation" is our air conditioning style in the small village of Willits. In the summer, several fans and open windows cool the room at night. During the day, we shut the windows from the outside heat. Easy access from 101 and the downtown Willits live music scene, pubs, local shops...located right in town, a walk able 2 blocks from many restaurants.
The west side of Willits is considered to be the area with the most history in our little valley. This older section of town provides a safe place to stroll and admire the variety of architectural styles, from stately Victorians to the charming Craftsman bungalows. It is a quiet and safe neighborhood a few minutes from downtown.

Basically, this area is the "Gateway to the Redwoods - famous (from Reno) arch over Hwy. 101 at the entrance to Willits. My home is 2 miles from downtown. The property is 2/3 of an acre and mostly landscaped. Willits is also 15 minutes to the famous Sea Biscuit Ranch, 33 miles to the coast, and 60 miles to Richardson Grove - some of the most beautiful redwood groves.
Nicely appointed, antique furnished room with new comfortable, double mattress in bright room. Half of the closet has room to hang any clothes and the two top drawers of the dresser are also available. The bathroom has a tub/shower combo, fresh towels and toiletries. Wifi is available throughout the house.
Neighborhood is in the country, yet close to downtown. Note: Neighbors have chickens/rooster, and the room does face the main road so its not totally quiet - even more so if the windows are ajar. If you need total quiet, this may not be the place you want. Nights usually cool down and there is a fan in the room if needed. None of this has been an issue so far.

Quiet mountain retreat, nestled high in the hills overlooking Redwood Valley on one side and a meadow and pond on the other. Swim and raft on the pond or just watch the fish. Meditate at Abhayagiri Monastery, enjoy the wildlife on 116 wooded acres, hike the headwaters of the Russian River, or just relax in front of the Franklyn fireplace (the heat for the cabin).
The cabin has a large redwood paneled living room with a Franklyn fireplace (the heat for the cabin) and a dining area with a view down the valley. The cabin sleeps 4 (or more with futons). It has a small bedroom with double bed and a bed in the living room that can be pulled out to make 2 twin beds or 1 king-size bed. It has a full kitchen and bathroom. It’s a rustic country cabin. Not a prim B&B, but I like it a lot. It has a deck on the east side looking across the valley. The deck is shaded by big oaks in the summer and the leaves fall off to let in the sun in winter.
Redwood Valley is a rural town about 20 minutes from the cabin. In town there is a little market, a nice bar, a mexican restaurant, and a gas station. For more options and conveniences, Ukiah is a 30 minutes from the cabin. Plan your trip accordingly and pick up supplies on your way. We are just across the road from Abhayagiri Monastery (Thai Buddhist) where I like to go on Saturday evenings for the Dharma talk and meditation. On Sunday I will often go to the monastery for brunch (11 AM). If I can’t bring the traditional donation of food for the brunch I make a donation to the monastery. Mendocino County has many wonderful places to explore. Montgomery Redwoods and it's neighbor, Orr Hot Springs. Look into it if this sounds interesting to you! You must book in advance to bathe in these fabulous springs so call a few days ahead. Vichy Springs in town is also great. In addition, make an appointment for wine tasting at Frey Vineyards, open Monday-Friday. Please call them at least a week in advance.
  • The host canceled this reservation the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.

This is the most beautiful place on the Mendocino coast, and perhaps in all of Northern California. Switzer Farm of Westport is a fully restored 1884 Victorian farmhouse that sits atop 22 secluded oceanfront acres directly overlooking the wild Pacific Ocean. It will comfortably sleep 19 adults and 6 children. The property is located about 35 minutes north of Mendocino and just south of the historic village of Westport.
The home is completely private, situated far away from its nearest neighbor. It is further shielded by forested lands to the south, north and east, while enjoying uninterrupted access to and views of the crashing waves, sea stacks and wild beaches to the west. Because the house and property are all west of Highway 1, there is nothing between you and the ocean but open and very private space. There are majestic, expansive views of the Pacific Ocean from all of the home's west rooms, upstairs and downstairs, and even from half of the rooms on its east side. To top it off, there is a beautiful west-facing veranda overlooking the ocean and headlands below — perfect for morning coffee or a sunset family dinner. The house will sleep 20+ people — there are beds for up to 19 adults and 6 of their children. There are 8 beautiful bedrooms (2 of which have both a bed for adults and sofa bed for their children), plus a living room with sofa bed, and a full size attic equipped with self-inflating queen air mattresses. There is a gourmet kitchen with top of the line appliances, 4 full bathrooms (2 with ocean views), and a laundry room and pantry. The tables in the dining room and kitchen will seat 20 people, and can be arranged in tandem fashion to seat folks contiguously. In addition to the main house, there are two historic barns and a garden shed, all with unimpeded views of the ocean. This is our forever home, and we welcome you to enjoy it as much as we do.
This is the perfect place to get far away from city life and enjoy time cloistered with family and friends, hiking, beach combing, stargazing, or whale-watching from the house, veranda and expansive grounds and promontories. Each evening, the deer and feral goat come out from our forest to graze in the ocean-front meadow below. We spot a whale — or many whales — most days we are here. The sounds of the crashing surf ease us to sleep each evening and greet the new day as we awake each morning. The village of Westport is just a short walk north. The Westport Village Society built a town staircase a 5 minute walk from our house that will take you down to a public beach. There is a terrific hotel, the Westport Hotel, and its Abalone Pub offers great food and drink most nights a week in season. The Westport Store is a terrific country store offering essential items like coffee, wine, soft drinks and beer -- but they make a good pizza and have good bagels too. If you need to do a big grocery shop, Fort Bragg is just a 20 minute drive south. All around the house are great trails for hiking and sightseeing. There are great beaches for surfing, swimming or beach combing within a 10 minute drive north or south.
  • After a four-hour scenic drive from San Francisco through towering redwoods and breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean crashing into the cliffside, we arrived at Switzer Farm of Westport. The majestic home is a thoughtful blend of authentic Victorian period details (beautiful, yet whimsical light fixtures and intricate door hinges) and modern conveniences (microwave, dishwasher, and washer/dryer). The rooms are filled with plush beds that invite sleep and cozy sofas on which to curl up with a good book. Both of the master bedrooms face the ocean, so you can fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves. It was the perfect home for a multi-family getaway to celebrate our grandmother's 80th birthday, as there were plenty of bedrooms for us, as well as indoor and outdoor spaces for each of us to do what we wanted, alone or together. We cooked many meals at the house and made good use of the BBQ grill on the veranda. From the ocean-facing veranda, we watched the sun set on the horizon, as well as gazed at the Milky Way in a night sky filled with stars. We took a short walk to the sleepy town of Westport and climbed down the stairs to the local beach, and picked up some delicious pizza at the general store to eat back at the house. There's also a great grocery store (Harvest Market) in nearby Fort Bragg to stock up the fridge. We were hoping to do more in the surrounding area, but ended up lazing away the day at the house because it was just that comfortable--truly a home away from home. Gary, the host, was extremely responsive as we contacted with him questions and very understanding that there are some quirks to Victorian homes (e.g., how to switch from hand shower to standing shower). We can't wait to return and explore more of the nearby area!

A roadside attraction without the distraction. A car goes by, a bicyclist or walker passes, swallows dip and dart. This circa 1890s former blacksmith shop is twenty feet to the peaceful Pacific Coast Highway, and a quick walk to a secluded beach. Westport boomed in 1878 and was the largest town north of San Francisco, but truth be told, not much happens here any more. Open and airy and cozy and happy, packed with strange and varied art work. Enjoy cooking and napping, reading or staring, and the endless changing Pacific off the deck. Writers, escapists, and creative types will appreciate the solitude of the detached artist studio. One bedroom is cozy and dark, the other bright, with a view to the ocean and a loaded bookshelf. The kitchen has a 4 burner gas range/oven and coffee maker. The living area has a long table for a gourmet spread or a project. Bath with shower, washer and dryer, and the Lost Coast's largest collection of those plaster fish. Watch a DVD or listen to music. Play a game. Be inspired. Soak in the hot tub or just sit on the porch in comfortable adarondack chairs. Outside you will find a 100 square foot artist studio with another large deck. There is a writing desk inside and a stereo system for ipod/computer hookup with two indoor speakers. Great space to do some morning yoga or painting. There is also a very comfortable oversized chair that converts to a twin size sleeper bed. Extra sheets/blankets are next to the sofa sleeper. You will also find a charcoal grill outside. There sandy beaches just a block away and down the bluffs to stairs. All the nearby beaches are dog friendly too and pets are welcome in my home. Buy local! The Westport General store sells beer and staples and makes great organic sandwiches and pizzas to order. The Westport Hotel and Old Abalone Pub serves dinners on the weekends. Off high-way parking for two cars. Note that the side yard is a sculpture construction site for The Westport Whale, a future roadside attraction. This place has all the basic amenities without the frills. The exterior of the house is almost completely renovated fully restoring it to it's historic state. It is my Dream and my favorite place to be in the whole world. I hope you will enjoy it too.
  • My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Kyle's artist studio. I definitely recommend the place to those that are looking to stay at a more individualized place versus your typical generic pad. Kyle was courteous, responsive, and laid back....and the bed was comfy and the shower had good pressure. We made dinner in one night as well which was nice...and the view is great! I'd definitely return here in the future!

    Joe2012-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Kyle did it again! This is the third time my husband and baby vacation here. It seems to get better and better (this time with sun). Truthfully it doesn't matter the weather. You can stay busy at the beach, in the hot tub, near the fire pit or just pick up a book. Relaxation in the name of this oceanside gem. Also in walking distance is a small gas/grocery mart that has local meats and A+ coffee. The house itself is super comfortable and Kyle continues to update and make improvements. Kyle is always prompt in answering every question or concern and always so friendly. Love the experience. Love Westport.

    RaeAnne2014-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our experience at the Whale house. Even though it's on the highway, there is so little traffic on that stretch of road that it was just like being on any country road. The sound of the waves crashing was magnificent, and the house is very comfortable, and charming with Kyle's art everywhere. We also really appreciated the bottle of very good local wine and delicious chocolates!

    Katie & Jay2014-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • We just love staying at Kyles'! My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said a couple of days at Kyles. Our last stay was during a most pleasant time of the year but I must say every season is a great time to come here. We were there for THE STORM. It was positively beautiful! The Wind and the Ocean, so powerful! The little extra things (chocolates, wine, etc.) that Kyle does really makes you feel welcome. And it was sweet to see my whale drawing on the wall with all of the others. You can spend days just enjoying the art and the humor. May sound weird but we feel like we are part of a strange family that never get to meet but still share something magical.

    Susan2014-12-12T00:00:00Z
  • From the beginning Kyle was great! He was responsive to communication, was helpful with information about the area and directions to Westport, and easily accommodated our request to shift the dates of our stay. He truly goes out of his way to make the house feel like home. When we arrived there was a hand-written card from Kyle, whale shaped candies, and a bottle of wine that happened to be from my favorite winery (Navarro) in Mendocino. On top of being awesome, he's apparently psychic as well. The house is charming and conducive to getting your creative juices flowing. The view from the kitchen is fantastic and I found myself meditating on the view while doing dishes. There are two great beaches nearby and we virtually had the beach just north of the house to ourselves one afternoon. The hotel bar is closed and the no longer offer dinner on weekends, however, it is open for tea on Saturday afternoons. The store is a block away and a good place to pick up sandwiches before hiking or canoeing. Grab groceries in Ft. Bragg, heat up the grill, open a bottle of wine and take in the sunset. We can't wait to go back!

    Kevin2015-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • Where to start? This house could not have been better for us. At first glance, I thought to myself, Oh, ok, kinda close to the road but one step onto the property and the road was completely forgotten. When we stepped through the " the white picket fence " into the back yard , immediately our stress started to slip away. the view of the deck was magnificent. Many whale sightings, lovely. And the hot tub was so relaxing after a wonderful meal that we got to make ourselves ( very nice after eating restaurant food for 2 weeks). The inside of the house is undescribable, awakening your senses in every room. We slept in the ocean side room on a wonderful bed that enveloped you the minute you layed down. They days we were there were cloudy and wet, depressing, not a chance! The aura of peace that this house exudes is pure magic. We almost didn't go down to the beach because of the weather but we decided we had to at least see it, so we put on our hoodies and windbreakers and off we went. Oh my, we were sooo glad we did, beautiful and majestic does not begin to describe it. We also made a trip across the street to the quirky little variety store there. It smelt wonderful, they were baking a pizza, handmade on sight, and the people were so friendly, gave us some old newspapers to light the barbq with. I know this is long and your probably tired of reading it but the experience of this cottage/house is life giving. We couldn't have felt more at home. To you, Kyle, thank you for allowing us to be part of your dream. The wine, chocolates, gummies and note just made the whole experience even more touching. I loved that you allowed us to be part of the many works of art on your walls. Have you found the little bit of Canada left behind? It may have blown away with that storm. We will definetly be back, an earthquake couldn't keep us away. If you are looking for your "peace of mind " and a little slice of heaven, this is the place you want to go.

    Nancy2014-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • The restorative effect of this special home has already been described plenty. My husband, toddler, 2 dogs and I returned to our home in the stucco suburbs and Kyle's home, our excursions to two beaches, eating crab patty sandwiches on the deck watching the ocean (twice in one day) felt like it had been a dream. Here are some hopefully helpful details: -Towels included (I wasn't sure about this and was something I looked to past reviews for info on) -Tableware and cookingware all included -Cleaning service does a fantastic job - floors felt and looked clean, bathroom spotless, sheets felt fresh -We drove from Willits to Fort Bragg after 5 pm and the glaring sun setting to the west combined with pretty windy roads gave us pretty bad headaches. So I'd advise driving in earlier, if you can. -Read the book on the coffee table about the history of Westport. Fascinating! made us feel more connected during our stay

    Elizabeth2013-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • We certainly felt welcomed at Kyle's Dream Home in Westport. The location was perfect: very secluded and quiet but close enough for day trips to the towns of Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We dipped our toes into the ocean, massaged our bare feet along the sandy beaches, warmed up afterwards in the great hot tub with a magnificent view of the sunset and idled around our own log fire after grilling steak and washing it down with a lovely glass of wine! The beds were super comfortable and our teen spent hours taking photos of the art works and views. I'm still hearing the sound of the ocean in my head and I can't wait to be back!

  • This place offers an amazing, one-of-a-kind, vacation experience. From expansive views to private beach access and morning tide pools, Westport Landship was an ideal place for our family vacation (ages 18-88). The only note to mention is there was no cell service and very limited wifi (we loved the opportunity to disconnect, but don't plan on working from this vacation spot).

  • This place and this vacation is in my top list now... great and best place to connect with nature.

  • Beautiful home. Poking was very easy and Thomas communicated extremely well. Only downfall is the location of the fourth bedroom. Need to go outside to access it.

  • We most definitely would stay at the Landship again. The house was very comfortable and accommodated our party of 10 people (6 adults- 87 to 35 yrs old ~ and 4 kids ages 5 & 6). The stairs were a bit of a challenge for Grandma but she took her time going up them and was rewarded with a wonder view of the ocean from her bedroom. The bedroom with the 4 twin beds was perfect for the "Little's" as I call them. It has a small tv with a DVD player so they could go up and watch a movie. They have a good selection of DVD's both kids and adults. As a bonus for our 4 day stay the ladies of the house went down to the local Westport Hotel (it also has a bar) on Saturday afternoon to have High Tea while the guys hung out with the kids (4 Little's). We also took the Little's to the community park for an Easter egg hunt complete with the Easter Bunny and a light rain. Loved the private beach even though the steps were steep the Little's had no problems using them and loved it down there. They found a star fish and what was left of an octopus. LOL, don't touch it! Of course they did. They even got to see a foot long gardener snake eating a small lizard and thought that was fantastic. The only thing we found that the house was missing was shot glasses, but then maybe we just missed seeing them. The parking is limited but it was not a issue for us. We made some wonderful memories. Be sure to stop into the North Star Winery on your way to the Landship and have a glass of wine while watching the ocean.

  • Westport landship is amazing!! We were a party of 10, lots of space for all of us. The house has everything you will need to prepare meals & enjoy each other's company. We have cell service thru T-Mobile & had no service in Westport (I would suggest printing out your information before you get there). There is minimal wifi available, but that got everyone playing cards & board games instead of video games or You Tube. Lots of stairs to get to the beach but they weren't as bad or scary as they looked at first, just go down backwards & hold on to the railing. We saw sea lions not that far out in the water. Beach toys & towels are provided also. We drove up to Westport from San Francisco area. We drove 101 to Willits & the 20 to the coast, this route is mountain & tight turns (several got car sick). I would suggest driving 128 from Cloverdale & then up highway 1. This is the way we headed back to San Francisco, beautiful drive & some redwoods along the way. No one got sick & no tight turns. Both ways are beautiful & scenic. I would highly recommend this location to anyone!! We would love to go again!

  • Fantastic getaway for our family! Great Nautical theme throughout the amazingly spacious home. Loved the private beach and the outdoor swing to take in the views. Very private and quiet for a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Close to Fort Bragg and Mendocino for day trips. Made it back to the house in time for a glass of wine in front of the fireplace before dinner. Highly recommend this home. Thomas was very accessible and helpful, a great host!

  • We really had a good time and enjoyed the place a lot. It is amazingly beautiful and serene with private access to the beach. The beach itself was good with nice rocks nearby. The views from all rooms are amazing. The house is loaded with kitchen utensils, and lots of linen etc. Now the issues: we could not connect to the internet at all and had no cellular service too. While this can be a blessing at times, some of us were planning to work from home on one of the days and had to take off eventually. Also, there were no curtains in most rooms and it was difficult to put my baby to sleep with so much light. Another issue was the bbq grill was really old and rusty and we could not use it. While the owner informed me about the dated grill when I enquired a week before the travel, it would have been good to get this information during the booking time. Overall, we really liked the place for its beauty and quiet, but were disappointed for the lack of internet, curtains, etc. We will definitely like to return if these things were taken care of.

  • This house is in such a special place. The house itself is well maintained and is very cozy. The private beach and ocean views are unbeatable.

Super Private Custom Built Home on 388 acres. This is a one-of-a-kind vacation rental because of the privacy and the large piece of property that is yours to explore. The house is a beautiful custom built home in an idyllic setting.
This is a one-of-a-kind vacation rental because of the the large piece of property (388 acres) that is yours to use and explore. The house is a beautiful custom built home with hardwood cherry floors, two large redwood decks, four bedrooms and two baths, a family room, living room, dining room and is in one of the most beautiful locations that you can imagine. Located in the redwood belt you can enjoy miles of trails along cascading streams and little waterfalls that run through fern covered redwood forests. Fish or swim in the pond, bike or hike along the trails. Lay out in the hot tub at night and watch the stars in the crystal clear skies. The quietness of the property is truly amazing and is like nothing you will find anywhere else. Have a quiet family reunion in one of the most beautiful pieces of property that you will ever visit. The custom built house is only fifteen years old and until recently was our home with many homelike qualities. There is a large play set for the children and a gas barbeque for entertaining. A beautiful creek runs past the front of the house and two ponds are on the property. One of the ponds is only 100 feet from the house. There are numerous species of wildlife including hawks, owls, pond turtles, river otters, and great blue herons to name a few. There are two decks, one is covered and faces the pond and the other faces a meadow with 250 year old oak trees. The kids can pitch a tent in the adjacent meadows and explore the forests and creeks while you lay in the hammock among the oak trees. This rental is as close to a wilderness adventure as you can get without actually having to rough it. Additional photos and reviews available upon request

  • This is a beautiful house in an idyllic setting, perfect for a couple of families with children. The meadow at the back of the property has a large climbing structure and hammock, and was teaming with butterflies. At the front, there's a pond with a little boardwalk. The children weren't at all bothered by the thick green water, and had a wonderful time swimming with the inflatable rings that are provided, and trying (and failing) to net the many turtles who were basking there. There were even several kids' life vests, so our non-swimmers could play in the water safely. The grown ups enjoyed taking walks on the trails, and the breathtaking clear view of the stars at night. The listing said there wasn't a TV, which was fine for us, but there is a TV screen and a nintendo, plus board games and jigsaw puzzles, and a foosball table. There are loads of blankets and towels, and a well-stocked kitchen. Note that the broiler is UNDER the oven!

    Clare2016-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was great! The house is very nice and very remote which is just what we needed to disconnect from the daily grind.

  • Great house on a beautiful private property. Cozy and warm with the wood stove and hot tub (and plenty of wood stocked up by Art). Hot water was plentiful. Plenty of trails to explore right on the property. Art was very responsive to questions before and during. Kitchen had everything you will need, including coffee grinder and french press, all cookware. Stove/oven and fridge are smallish, but we had no problem cooking for 8 with a little creativity, including using the nice and plenty-big grill outside. If you want to play iPod/etc. through the sound system being an 1/8" to 1/4" adapter. ~15-20 minute drive down the mountain into town, so plan accordingly. A bit of a drive, but visiting Humboldt Redwood SP and tide pools on the coast make for great day trips. For shopping, Safeway in town has most everything you need, and there's also an organic market.

    David2015-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • My friends and I stayed at Art's place for a long weekend and had a fantastic time. We were looking for a remote, relaxing spot, and that's exactly what we found. We spent a lot of time sitting by the pond in front of the house, as well as hiking around the property. The hiking was great for anyone who doesn't mind bushwhacking (for a more easy going hike, the road that leads up to the property is lined with redwoods and has a stream that runs alongside it).

    Aaron2014-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great time, what a wondeful property, secluded and truly peaceful!

    juan2017-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second year coming back and we loved it as much as the first. The house is great, really well-stocked, and Art is super friendly and easy to work with. I definitely recommend this place (just hopefully not the weekends we want it!).

    Julia2016-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • This home was perfect for my husband's surprise birthday. All 16 of us fit nicely and the grounds were beautiful. It was great to see the 8 kids without internet actually playing and enjoying the outdoors, card games and each other. Perfect for a REAL getaway.

    Kerry2016-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Art's property is true to it's description, it truly is a private park! A wonderful place in the redwoods that our group really enjoyed. The best combo: rope swing into the cold pond followed by a run to the hot tub on the back deck. His place is well stocked with everything you'd need to host dinner and the beds are all very comfy. We'd definitely stay again.

This ranch has been in my family for over 100 years. I love to share the beauty and harmony with others because there is so little of it left anymore. This darling cabin that I had so much fun redecorating from top to bottom, is complete with full kitchen , large bath and giant king bed. While you rest with your feet up inside, you can still see nature from the giant picture windows surrounding both the kitchen and living room area. Peaceful and relaxing for the soul.
A paradise for nature lovers, guests will frequently see great blue herons, pelicans, red tail hawks, multiple types of hummingbirds, flocks of wild turkeys, frogs, quail, and foxes. There are domestic animals like Shetland Sheep( they are new to us). Lambs are born at different times of the year so maybe you'll be lucky enough to witness a birth. Horses love a pet or two and will always have their noses out for a snack ("watch your fingers"). If you want to decompress "off grid", away from your cell phone and email (satellite tv, wifi and landline available but thats your little secret) in a serene valley with views of the milky way on clear nights, mornings filled with fog dripping off of old growth redwoods, and the distant crash of the ocean waves piercing the healing night time quiet, then this is the place. The City of Fort Bragg is just 20 minutes away down our rustic lumber road to satisfy your fine dining, cultural and live music cravings. Ocean walks and horse back trail riding are just a short drive away.
This is a quiet and peaceful property with bright sunny meadows and stands of redwood on the perimeter. The owner's father and grandfather built the barns and many of the buildings with lumber from the property. Some of this exquisite clear grain old growth redwood lumber was repurposed to make handmade shelving units and trim the counters and windows in this cabin.
  • After 15 years of traditional B&B lodging in Fort Bragg for all our special occasions (anniversaries/birthdays), we are converts! This was our second stay with Jay, a wonderful host who bends over backwards to accommodate her guests. There are surprises aplenty! Upon learning that we eat low-carb, it was clear Jay had researched appropriate foods we could eat. Not even family works this hard! Having tried unsuccessfully to book a stay at our usual haunts in August (our first stay), we could not have been happier for the lack of availability of king sized beds in town, as we would otherwise never have found this magical location and beautiful host full of love - where we will return again and again! The cabin is just as pictured and described…However, there is so much more to discover. The fog enshrouded evenings can be mystical, but if you are lucky enough to land a clear night: sit on the deck with your favorite libation or just your companion, look up and just listen. You will not believe your eyes and ears and I guarantee you will not ever want to leave.

  • We've just spent the most amazing long weekend at Swanky Cabin on Working Ranch. If you are looking for rest, relaxation and starry nights, this is the place! This is not a rustic cabin at all - sparkling clean and beyond comfortable, full of modern amenities including well-appointed kitchen and bathroom, fabulous shower and a cloud-like bed. The very best part of our experience, though, was getting to know the owner, Jay Gray. Jay is the best host I’ve ever encountered – friendly, thoughtful, informative and generous – yet she is always sure to give you privacy if that’s what you want. The ranch has so much history, and I wish we could have stayed longer and spent more time with Jay (and her sweet horses!). Swanky Cabin is one of the places that I hesitate to review, because I don’t want the secret to get out! But it would be wrong to keep this gem from others with a sense of adventure and a desire to learn about how things used to be in a simpler time. We hope to return soon!

    Renee2014-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • A slice of heaven! There are not enough superlatives in the English language to relate our experience at the Swanky New Cabin. Jay is an absolutely delightful host, as welcoming as her fresh, beautifully appointed cabin is warming. The pure peace you feel once on the property is overwhelming. The cabin is private and secluded, and Jay provides lots of little extras - from sundries you may have forgotten to spices and oils, etc for cooking in the spacious kitchen, etc. I won’t spoil all the secrets with too many details. Just know this is a perfect retreat!!! I literally felt part of me was missing when we left, but we did leave lighter, refreshed, more in harmony with each other and the world. We frequently visit the Mendocino area, and this was our first airbnb experience, but we will return again and again to Jay’s Swanky New Cabin. We have made a life-long friend!

    Deanna2014-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing stay. It's hard to even explain the level of care and attention to detail that was provided so I would have an amazing stay. Jay is the property owner and Persephone is the booking assistant on property and they both work together to go above and beyond to make sure their guests are comfortable and feel like family. Very warm and king people and a BEAUTIFUL cabin that is modern and rustic all at the same time. Jay thought of everything when she created this special place, which you will see. Beautiful sheep and chickens on property as well, so get ready to be greeted by "bah-ing" sheep saying "hello!" They are adorable and sweet and it's fun to watch them. Their baby lambs enjoy watching birds and chasing about, it's quite entertaining! The kitchen in the cabin is really big and has all the things you will love to cook with if you are a fan of cooking. They have some local markets that are really special, so ask about them so you can venture out and check them out. There are also many local restaurants of course if you'd prefer to be pampered and enjoy the local fare. Drive slowly down the long drive as many dear and baby fawn and bucks are leaping in and out of the forest around you and many species of birds abound, so please drive cautiously as to not injure any of them, not to mention the charming animals on the farm as you arrive to the cabin.

  • My boyfriend and I had an amazing time kayaking on the river, BBQ out side and spending nights playing dominoes and just listening to nature. Thank you Team Otter for sharing your amazing little slice of heaven. We will be back, hopefully next time to use the fire pit as well. (Because of dry conditions we weren't able to light a fire.)

    Lauren2015-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a gem. Our hosts were gracious and kind, and the place itself was beyond our expectations. We took the kayaks out at dusk when the river was still and calm and felt our worries evaporate with the fog. In the morning we watched the ospreys moving through the alders and listened to the woodpeckers in the willows. This place is a peaceful retreat created by thoughtful people. We were grateful for the whole experience and hope to return soon.

    Becky2016-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Judy and Raven were excellent hosts! They took the time to show us around the property and to change the battery in the light for the privy. My husband and I went kayaking for the first time, picked wild blackberries, and built a glorious campfire all in complete privacy. It was incredibly relaxing. I wish I could've stayed longer! Just a heads up : this is SUPER off the grid, meaning no electricity, no cell service, no Internet, all nature. If that sounds like the kind of getaway you like, then you're sure to fall in love with otters' den!

    Guinevere2013-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about our stay was magical. It is hard to overstate the beauty of this spot- a cozy cabin tucked away inside a gorgeous isolated woodland meadow on the banks of an estuary. Everything about the space is brimming with life- during our stay we saw blue herons, otters, storks, deer, rabbits and more. The cabin is a reflection of this liveliness - unique, with a life of its own, it is rustic and charming and very unique. It's quite a good deal to start (considering the scale of the space), and even more so when you consider that kayaks are provided for use at no additional charge. I hope to return.

    Sam2015-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • The Otter's Den is a beautiful getaway! My older sister and I wanted an escape without the work involved in camping...this was perfect. We kayaked, BBQ'd fresh salmon from Noyo Harbor, played cards, explored, and rested. It was perfect. I will return, and it can't be soon enough. Thanks Team Otter!

    AJ2014-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • I can't gush enough about the Otter's Den - my partner & I spent a long weekend there for our rustic backwoods honeymoon & it was absolute perfection ve found it... Judi & Team Otter are wonderful hosts who will show you the land (I recommend arriving before nightfall, make the most of your time!) & give you tips on what to check out - this place is a rural dream come true :)

    Alexis2013-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • I cannot say enough about this magical place. The river is a placid dream. The cabin is a cross between the stern gallery of an old sailing ship and a tree house. Off-the-grid is done with comfort and simple elegance here. No real needs were lacking. The lack of any kind of connectivity was a major plus though. It is beyond private and rich with every natural wonder. I have rarely been so happy with a vacation rental. And, for the record, I am starting my fifth decade, and very hard to please. ;)

    Keith&Lou2015-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • This place exceeded our expectations. The venue is a perfect getaway, in all senses of the word. The cabin is lovely, clean and cozy. The outdoor space is beautiful, remote and quiet. The views of the water are surpassed only by the kayaks which you can use to explore them more. We had two delightful evenings here, and cannot wait to go back. Judi and Raven took great care of us, giving us all the information we needed and leaving us to our own devices when we wanted. I cannot say enough good things about the entire experience.

  • Carla was very helpful and provided us with great tips on local places to visit, picnic and things to do. Her insight into the area really helped us make our weekend trip enjoyable! The house is full of charm, and the layout was conducive to great family time together. Waking up to the sun rising over the ocean and walking on the grounds to see the spectacular sunset was stunning.

  • THANK YOU, CARLA!! We absolutely LOVED our stay in this charming home, on a Spectacular piece of land. The cozy Craftsman style home is decorated with lovely & comfy vintage furnishings, & yet has plenty of modern upgrades. Great mattresses, flat screen TV, solid wifi, central heating & a new washer & dryer. So comfortable I found myself wanting to hang out there with my pooch, rather than go out sight-seeing. And then there is the breathtaking property...just below the house is a huge, open meadow where my dog loved to run & play. And across the meadow, dramatic cliffs & gorgeous coastal, ocean views. Being there during a rainy week in January, the swells were huge & beautiful, & we found ourselves wandering down there on a daily basis, just to enjoy the power & beauty of mother nature at her best! :) We are already planning our next trip back. Thanks again to the Risse family, & Samuel, their very friendly, helpful & yet barely noticeable caretaker.

  • Carla did a fantastic job making sure that we had everything that we needed going into the weekend. She gave very clear instructions on how to get into the house, and had everything ready to go.

  • My husband and I stayed here with my mother-in-law, 3 year old son, and infant daughter. The location is beautiful! Pictures do not do it justice. The view is lovely and it is just a quick walk down to the bluffs. It was a very relaxing place to stay too. The house has all historical furniture but is still very comfortable. My family really loved the fire pit out back, we made s'mores one of the nights. We all talked about how we can't wait to come back!

    Lisa2017-06-25T00:00:00Z
  • The house was beyond perfect. Its really large for an old house, it has a great kitchen and a great old fireplace. Its filled with lots of cool old touches and the views are great from almost every window. Its very secluded and the property is amazing. I dont think you can find anything quite like it on the North Coast. 22 acres and a private cove with a beach?

    Nicholas2015-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Carla reached out to us. The place was beautiful and clean. The location was perfect for us. Easy to shop in ft. Bragg and then get back to serenity!!

    Lilian2016-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • It was a perfect place to stay for a small group of people! The house has a classic oldies look and was well decorated. Beds were fairly comfortable and we definitely made use off the outdoor fire-pit! Just keep in mind this place is fairly isolated with limited cell reception and is about 11 miles away from town. Overall, 5 star service at a 5 star place!

  • We never had the plesure of meeting Carla, but she made sure the house was set up for upon our arrival. The hosue has a lot of antique character, and a comfortable vibe. The setting though is the real winner here. Situated on a beautiful piece of land, with sweeping ocean views over a craggy cove, it also sported a private beach reached only by a clifside rope climb. We had intentions on going to other beaches and hikes, but deciced to enjoy the amazing setting this house sits on. Would definately go back! Make sure you bring all soaps and toiletries. Nothing provided besides towls.

This is an amazing home on a private peninsula surrounded by the sea, sandy beaches and nature. The home is newly remodeled. Watching birds soar, whales swimming by and children playing on the beach below. It is truly a front row seat by the sea !
Everyone that comes here says its the best view of any home they have ever been. It is end of the road privacy. There is a gourmet kitchen and 3 newly remodeled bathrooms. At low tide there is a sea cave below that takes you to a secret beach. This is a destination you'll always remember !
A mostly quiet neighborhood with vacation homes and other vacation rentals. It surrounded by trees and the sea.
  • Seaside point is a gem. Situated on a peninsula overlooking the beach and the sea, the views are unreal. It's tranquil. The waves provided a peaceful soundtrack to realizing in this great home. My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights. It was so relaxing. You can walk the beach below. The dunes just down the road are great running and walking trails. Jackson state park is close by as well for great redwood hiking. At night, the star gazing is so far beyond what you will see in the city. You can see the Milky Way on a clear night. This place is also great because it's 3 and 1/2 hours from the city, a pretty straight shot up the 101 if you hit it with no traffic. Deryl is a great host. His house is beautiful, all the features are gorgeous. The bathrooms and bedrooms are fantastic. The kitchen is great, with plenty of room. The gas range, all the finishes are well done. We recently remodeled so we noticed all the little things and he did an excellent job with this home! Waking up to a view of the ocean: priceless. We will be back! Can't recommend this home enough!

  • I'm not sure I want to let the rest of the world in on this unbelievable property. It is one of a kind. Unique in that nothing compares to this property. There are NO properties that compare. Lucky we found it for a long weekend!

  • This is an amazing home! Secluded, beautiful, comfortable. The view cannot be beat. During the day, you see the ocean, and at night you see the Milky Way from the hot tub. Really a magical place.

  • What an amazing experience! This place is so tranquil, beautiful, and comfortable. Deryl is an attentive and accommodating host, and I'd come back to his place in a heartbeat.

If you wish to spend your stay relaxing or in retreat, we hold space for you to do that as well. Your well-appointed suite was designed by the same Frank Lloyd Wright School architect who designed and built the main house. Our home is perched on top of the highest point west of Highway 101, with vast stunning vistas of elegant Redwood, Fir, Madrone, Manzanita, Oak trees, plus Chaparral and wildflower covered slopes. We are happy to serve as your personal guides on private wilderness trails, direct you to easy walks on our un-paved quiet road, guide you to our special spots for sitting on a rock contemplating the view of seemingly endless wilderness, while surrounded by singing birds, fresh air and ocean breezes. The Gardens have been a popular feature on charitable garden tours. You are invited to experience off-grid living in a thoroughly modern home with all the amenities. Electricity has never been available here, so for the past quarter century we’ve been building up our own abundant solar generating system, backed up by generator on cloudy winter days. Solar energy pumps our pure and delicious well water, and solar water heating is on the roof. Weather permitting, we heat, cool and cook with solar in addition to pumping our well water, powering lights and appliances. This ranch/retreat is perched on a rocky mountain top in the spectacular coast range wilderness 2.5 hours north of San Francisco. We have 360 degree panoramic views (from your private space too!) of big mountains, forest, and ocean with abundant wildlife and lots of hummingbirds. This is an ideal Nature Lover's, Writer's, Musician's & Painter's spot; perfect for a Birthday, Anniversary, Honeymoon or Special Getaway with your Sweetheart, Best Friend, or Best Traveling Buddy. Terrific home base for visiting Redwoods, Wineries, Festivals, Coast and Hiking Trails all over the County. The Guest Suite, like the entire house, is a bit of an art gallery/museum of our personal travels around the world as anthropologists; and contains a portion of our precious personal reference library. The Suite was built with steel framing - recycled cars - rather than wood, the oak & redwood trim came from down trees on the property, milled on site. The ceiling is redwood, made from the wood of a huge old water tank. The floor is sustainably sourced Oak. The house was designed and built by Thomas F. Bingham, of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. The Guest Suite was designed by Thomas F. Bingham and built by Jay Fraser of Willits. This is a fabulous destination in and of itself. Most visitors settle in and do not leave until their restful stay is over. The acoustics are great for singing and non-amplified musical instruments, hence the many house concerts we have hosted here. A good flashlight is a must for after dark, there are no street lights anywhere, no nearby neighbors. We provide flashlights for you. If you ask, Creek will do a star show for you with his telescope - weather permitting - or you can just relax on the deck after dark, soaking in the vast Milky Way and occasional shooting stars. Definitely bring binoculars if you are into enjoying our terrific birding. Don't forget your camera! Prepare for spectacular Sunrises, and long, lavish, lingering Sunsets where the sun slips into the ocean before your eyes. Wildflowers and stargazing are all superlative. We love spontaneity, so we welcome short notice bookings. Though our retreat is on top of a mountain in the breathtaking California outdoors, we are easier to reach than you may suspect. Our property is only 8 miles from Highway 101, and it is quite convenient to arrive by a rental or personal car. Don't worry about getting here with a city car - I drive a Prius on the route you will take. The big UPS truck comes here daily. The road from the highway is all paved; except for a short, mostly flat, 1 mile from the community gate to our driveway, which is paved in all the tough spots. When you follow the detailed directions to get to the house, make sure you take the main road which is all pavement from the highway to the Yellow Gate. Internet is adequate for your getaway vacation. We get our broadband wireless signal from a ridge-top source, 6 air miles to the east of us, line of sight. We are grateful to have the best internet outside of the city limits. Much of this county has little to none, mostly due to the landscape; the forest, the mountains, the canyons, and the small, rural population. As your hosts, we hold space for your goals for this experience. If you wish to interact with us, we are available. If you seek privacy, that's perfect with us as well. For your health and comfort, and that of others, this is a pet/domestic animal-free, non-smoking and drug-free property. Willits (and Ukiah also) has an abundance of excellent restaurants, a book of menus is on your coffee table. It is 25 minutes driving on a mountain road to Willits, so you might seriously consider dining before you arrive, or bringing your dinner - you'll likely not want to leave once you get here, and Willits rolls up the sidewalks at 9 pm. We can easily make ample extra refrigerator space available for you, especially for longer than overnight stays, so plan on bringing food with you, and sharing our humble country kitchen, if you wish.
Our region was recently voted #3 destination in the world to visit... we are so totally honored! In addition, The Washington Post recently published the findings of a USDA Natural Amenities Scale ranking the most desirable places to live in the United States. Not surprisingiy, Mendocino County and its North Coast neighbors, Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, took three of the five top spots! It is obviously time to take a trip to one of the top places to live in the U.S.! This is a stunningly beautiful rural mountainous region with abundant hidden treasures waiting to be discovered and savored. The peace and quiet, the great outdoors, the fresh air, fresh food, the Giant Redwoods, The Skunk Train, The Wine and Mushroom Festival, the extraordinary Pacific coast ... diversity, friendly people, our first class community theatre, top quality local art, world class concerts, music festivals, award winning wineries, Frontier Days celebration and Rodeo, the July 4th parade, Kinetic Carnivale, Roots of Motive Power, eclectic shopping ... excellent restaurants, local artists, farmers markets ... Our two nearby towns are Willits [about 5,000 people] and Ukiah [about 15,000 people]. We are very active in our delightful community, and will love introducing you to the art, music, excellent restaurants, shopping; assist you with your touring and savoring...if you ask us. We have placed menus and local/regional information in your room, as we are proud members of the Chamber of Commerce. Most people here are very interesting, well educated, progressive, artistic, genuinely friendly and well-informed. Ask anyone on the street if you are looking for something! Mendocino County is a noted art colony, no wonder - who wouldn't be inspired to create when surrounded by all this beauty! Especially for birders: Fall is migration time for hummingbirds. We have so many here that it astounds us. They return in Mid March to spend the entire summer and early fall with us and their nesting trees. We have observed a Peregrine Falcon at very close range from the house. They are resident here. In Fall the Band Tailed Pigeons return to our garden, sunning themselves in the tall trees, especially in the mornings. Ravens are offering commentary in the afternoons these days and doing some incredible trick flying in full view of the house. They sure have a lot of fun. We also have many nesting songbirds in our gardens, be prepared for their serenades, especially in Spring. We also hear frogs, crickets and owls at night. There is no background noise of the city, or nearby roads, so prepare to sleep well. Without ambient city lights we get very dark skies at night, the moon and stars pop right out at us. The flock of local birdwatchers are reporting lots of amazing birds every moment on our local e-group MendoBirds. Western Tanagers, Varied Thrush, Grosbeaks, Hummingbirds, a number of types of Warblers, Flycatchers, Rufous Sided Towhees, Bewick's Wrens, Stellars & Scrub Jays, Mountain and California Quail, Pileated Woodpeckers are among the many birds nesting in our garden. It seems there is a bird show going on in every tree. Our raven neighbors check on us frequently. Wild turkeys and Grouse are in the area. We are dedicated birders, and have a fair knowledge of wilderness skills and resources. We have decades of experience living in the wild lands. If you ask, we are happy to share any of our knowledge. • Kitty and Creek were incredibly accommodating, and were such gracious hosts. We arrived nearly 2 hours after we planned, but Kitty and Creek stayed up to greet us and show us around their beautiful home. Their home truly is a small piece of paradise, and they both went out of their way to make us feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed. My girlfriend and I would certainly go back (in fact we hope to do so sooner rather than later), and we are so very thankful to have spent a weekend with Kitty and Creek!

  • Kitty and Creek's property is just as lovely as the pictures and provided an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of SF. The fresh air and quietness were very much relaxing. They were very responsive and helpful with every question and concern in addition to providing insightful suggestions regarding local and global travel. I very much appreciated the snacks and beverages provided. Kitty and Creek's directions were very clear and easy to follow and they gave us enough space to absorb the scenery with privacy. Thank you and we hope to come back to experience the beauty in a different season!

  • One of the most relaxing visits ever. We only stayed for one night, but I felt like I had gone on a week long vacation. Kitty & Creek are amazing, from the moment you meet them it is as if you've know them for years. The drive to the house was gorgeous. We saw at least twelve deer while we're there and tons and tons of hummingbirds. The house is beautiful, the host are wonderful- you couldn't ask for a better place to stay.

  • So nice we did it twice! First off, I would go stay in a shack on the side of the street if we got to hang out and spend time with Kitty and Creek. The fact that this is one of the most amazing pieces of property I have ever had the pleasure of stepping foot on makes it that much better. We originally found the listing while looking for a place to stay between San Francisco where we flew into from Texas and Del Norte Park where we were camping for 5 days. My girlfriend came across Willets and the first ad to pop up was Kitty and Creek's. Things could not have worked out better! We arrived the first night weary from traveling all day around 2AM, Kitty and Creek stayed up late for us and made sure we were comfortable before we all went to bed. We woke up and were offered breakfast while we did a little bird watching from the beautiful patio. We then hung out for a few hours before getting in the car to make the trip up to the Redwoods. We ended up deciding we really wanted to spend a little more time at the house so booked another last minute night for our departure heading back to San Francisco. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We spent that night out on the incredible balcony looking up at the billions of stars while Kitty and Creek pointed out Andromada, Jupiter, etc... I would recommend this property to anyone looking for an incredible get away with some of the best people you will ever meet. The wing of the house that is yours is awesome with so much space, very comfy bed, and so many cool knick knacks to look at. If you're into reading they have a great little library of different books, talk to Kitty about Arthur C Clarke for a while! Make sure to wake up in the morning so you can feel like you're floating in the clouds as you look out your window at the expansive greatness in front of you. Take the time to sit down with Kitty and Creek and get to know them a bit, they are amazing and extremely knowledgeable on too many subjects to count. We can't wait to go back next year and hopefully every year for the rest of our lives!

  • I use Airbnb all over the world and this was the most spetacular view of any place I've stayed! If you are looking for panoramic views, seclusion but near a small town, and great hosts this is your spot!! Kitty and Creek's home was one that I wanted to call my own and was excited to have the opportunity to share their slice of heaven for 2 nights. Due to the home's location it could be very difficult to find but Kitty was incredibly responsive and gave me everything I needed to make the process simple and easy. The star gazing is incredible accompinied by Creek's passion for astrology which made for awesome conversation. He also took the time to set up the telescope so we could look at Jupitor one night! It was so cool! I accompined Kitty on walk through their garden one afternoon while she shared her knowledge of the plants and wildlife that surround their home. If that wasn't enough the brief amount of time I spent in town of Willits I experienced the best organic grocery store, the best state side ramen I've had and an incredible crystal shop. This is five stars across the board!! This is a spot I would go out of my way for and would re-visit cause experience resonated so deeply with me.

  • Kitty & Creek are a very special couple with a very special place here. It IS just as amazing as it looks -- and more so. I have never before seen such a more perfect marriage of modern comforts and untamed wildness. Out on the deck you will have views that one can typically only get by "roughing it" up some old logging roads, yet all the warmth and comforts are home are right by your side. Walking through the woods will give you access to world-class views and put you in the middle of the animal kingdom -- birds, bees, lizards, insects, and other critters -- in such a profusion and abundance you will think you are walking through the woods of 500 years ago. Kitty and Creek themselves are founts of wisdom, optimism and perspective, and have created a true sanctuary for all weary travelers -- they are the type of people who keep our civilization on the right track! Come here for stillness and to reconnect yourself to the power of the natural world. You will not leave the same person.

    Drew2016-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • Kitty and Creek were quick to respond to our spontaneous, same day airbnb request to stay at their beautiful home in Willits. They were extremely kind and inviting -- Kitty gave us recommendations for things to do and provided a tour of the home while Creek took us stargazing on the patio at night. Everything we could possibly need from snacks, water, games, and bathroom toiletries were provided. The view was amazing. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

    Kathy2016-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • Kitty and Creek's home was as breathtaking as the photos! We spent hours on the deck watching the sun go down. Kitty was a warm and lovely host, her garden tour was a pleasure, and we really appreciated all the little touches that made our stay so pleasurable - from spare toothbrushes and slippers to a a nice selection of breakfast foods and drinks.. Our room was huge and comfortable. A wonderful experience

Rustic-chic cottage nestled in a eucalyptus grove along Hwy 1. Just minutes from the magical dunes and ocean panoramas of Mackerricher Park and a quick drive to all the local attractions. Also – check out our newly-listed House of the Forest Dunes. A bigger space with full kitchen. Rent out both spaces on the property for one of the best deals on the coast for large groups!
The space is a lovely 650-square-foot redwood-shingled cabin with bedroom (queen); kitchen (sink, counter, single induction burner, minifridge); full bathroom, and living room (pull-out couch) with loft (full-sized futon mattress). The cabin is well insulated and on cold winter nights, there are a couple of space heaters, which usually does the trick, or you can fire up the wood burning stove and make it super warm and cozy. There's also a small table for eating meals and stereo to plug your mobile device into. The cabin is about 50 yards from our house, and there are trees and a fence between them, so you're entirely private except if we happen to see each other in the driveway. We are right off of a sparsely driven stretch of Highway 1. Family vacation, romantic getaway, artist retreat -- it's a perfect spot for all your Mendo needs. The area around the cabin still needs to be landscaped – it's not picture perfect yet – so there's a substantial discount from what we will charge we create the magic garden of our dreams. But if you don't care about that stuff that much, it's a great bargain for lovely lodging on the coast.
We live across the street from peaceful horse pastures. On the other side of the house are the dunes and the ocean. We have neighbors, but the property is surrounded trees and you won't see anyone else. 20 minutes North is the trailhead to the Lost Coast. 7 minutes South is Fort Bragg... We're a great location for a Mendocino vacation, Ideally situated between the Northward attractions of Pacific Star Winery and Westport and Fort Bragg/Mendocino to the South. And of course, the dunes. We're just two minutes to an entrance to the park. Our guests spend a lot time out there walking, meditating, playing music, adventuring, stargazing... Walk or drive a little ways inland brings you to deep expanses of redwoods on hundreds of miles of old logging roads...
  • Great host, in the midst of renovating his own home. 5 minutes from downtown Fort Bragg. Had great recommendations.

    J Douglas2016-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Home was cozy, and largely as described. My 17 yr old daughter loved the loft, and the space was comfortable for a family of four. The house is on Highway 1, and right by the dunes of MacKerricher State Park. A fence, presumably required by the state, prevents access right from the house (you can see the dunes from the house), but access is available a couple of miles down the road. The host provided clear instructions on how to reach this access spot as well as a couple of others. The kitchen lacks a stove (gas or electric) or a microwave, so you will be limited in how much cooking you can do. The bedroom was lighted with only a string of fairy lights, which was not enough to read by, but we were able to move a lamp from the living room to the bedroom. The fire starter did not work and, lacking matches or a gas stove, we were unable to build a fire in the wood stove the night we arrived. Nonetheless, the space heater maintained an adequate temperature -- just not as fun as a wood fire! Finally, the listing for the cabin said $150 plus $25 for each extra person above 3. We were charged $200 for our family of four, which after I inquired the owner explained was because they charge different amounts depending on the date. It looks like after I brought the contradictory information in the listing to his attention, he changed it, so there shouldn't be further confusion. Overall, though, a pleasant spot, and well located to explore the sea coast around Ft. Bragg.

    Jonathan2016-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Exactly as described, perfect getaway for my family and I. So many helpful suggestions, especially how to access the dunes, which were beautiful. My kids loved the loft, and we all slept great. Thank you Jason!

  • Good location for touching dunes and experience a fantastic sea shore. Great host support with good tips.

  • What an incredible place! Jason was great in timing our arrival and making it an easy stay. The Cabin was super clean and very comfortable. The dunes and the surrounding area are fantastic! Had such an amazing stay here. Can't wait to come back.

    Michael2015-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Jason sent a great text the day before with info about the keypad lock (so useful) and the nearby dunes / beach. We followed the instructions for the closest access to the dunes in the one break in the rain all weekend and it was beautiful! We would love to come back to this part of the state during a non-monsoon and do more exploring and we would stay at this cottage again!

    Karin2016-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • We were greeted by Lauren upon arrival. Our itinerary included all the important details to familiarize ourselves with the cabin and Lauren was happy to offer dining recommendations and bring us logs for the wood burning stove (we ended up using the space heater instead). This place will be amazing once all the finishing touches are in place:)

Architecturally exquisite! Set in quiet, beautiful, peaceful, gardens with large pond. Gorgeous custom-made furniture, Bose surround-sound, spa-like glass block shower. Radiant heat. Deluxe latex bed. Short walk over dunes to deserted Ten Mile Beach.
Stunning Asian-inspired jewel set in gorgeous Japanese gardens with pond. Sand dunes and ocean steps away with private access from quiet neighborhood, making this section of beach relatively deserted. Dunes hold heat and burn off summer fog so the Inglenook area is a sunbelt, yet only 10 min from Ft. Bragg. Custom furniture from local fine woodworkers, Bose surround sound, wi-fi, bamboo heated floors, fully equipped kitchen, glass block spa shower with impeccable craftsman details everywhere. There is a 2 night minimum. All fees are included. Owner lives in main house on the property. On-site massage available from licensed professional- a total treat. Yoga mats and props available.
It's a private lane with private access to the entire Ten Mile Beach Preserve. Very safe and although it feels rural, you can be in Ft Bragg in 10 minutes.
  • The cottage was perfect - beautiful and peaceful, exactly what we wanted. I would definitely return.

  • Lindsay has an enchanted place on the magical coast. It's wonderful to enter into her harmonious dimension. We enjoyed the attention to the details and and the beautiful nature in her garden and outside on the coast. Thank you we will come back!

  • Our experience at the Zen Jewel Sanctuary exceeded our expectations! The beautiful space and thoughtful design was exactly what we needed for a relaxing weekend. The sanctuary had everything we needed from cooking supplies to a diverse selection of reading books. With the floor to ceiling windows, you're able to enjoy the beautiful gardens and listen to all of the nature happening around the area. Lindsay provided directions and numerous local tips about the surrounding towns, which helped us as we were ready to explore. The house was walking distance to the sand dunes and led us to a secluded beach where we were able to collect handfuls of sand dollars. We look forward to making this trip a regular thing!

  • This place is the perfect way to relax. Just outside of Ft. Bragg, you have easy access to groceries and restaurants but it's hard to get yourself to leave. The cabin is beautiful. Very Clean, quiet, nicely furnished and has all of the luxuries of home without any of the distractions. If you walk to the end of the road you'll find yourself in rolling dunes that lead to the ocean and tons of great hikes that can be reached in 60 minutes (usually less) by car. My suggestion is book as many nights as possible.

  • We had a lovely, relaxing father's day weekend at the Zen Jewel. The highlight was having a picnic breakfast next to the beautiful pond on the property. The house was simple yet luxurious, and inspired a feeling of serenity. Lindsay was a friendly and welcoming hostess. Hope to go back soon!

  • Zen Jewel was the perfect getaway! The Japanese design of the cottage, the main house and the gardens is amazing. Lindsay has created a beautiful, restful retreat. It is literally steps from the cottage to the dunes and the beach. Lindsay is a wonderful host and gives great direction about which attractions to visit in the area. I found Lindsay to be very warm and welcoming as well as very respectful of privacy, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with her. I also fell in love with her sweet dog. I am vey much looking forward to returning and hope that she will get to Austin.

The Rose Cottage is located in Inglenook on several acres, just 10 minutes north of Fort Bragg in a unique microclimate with very little fog, tucked behind the MacKerricher dunes. Access to the dunes and MacKerricher State Beach is located at the end of our private lane. The sun-lit cottage is situated in a serene landscaped garden setting with expansive deck, gas bbq & firepit. The studio cottage accommodates 2 with a firm queen-size bed, bath with tub/shower combo & small, well-equipped kitchen facility. Wood heat with firewood supplied. Owners reside on the property, greet guests personally and enjoy making recommendations for restaurants, activities, hikes, etc. There are abundant opportunities for hiking, bird-watching and beach-combing nearby. The cottage is equipped with excellent hiking and bicycling guidebooks. The cottage has no TV, phone or internet. Cell phone reception is spotty on the coast; internet cafes are located in town. NO PETS, NO SMOKING allowed. Nightly rates include 11% county bed tax. Guests are expected to have a high regard for personal property and leave the cottage in the condition it was found - there is no additional cleaning fee. There is a refundable security deposit. Check-in time is 3pm - 10pm; check-out time is 11am.
  • Super cute, clean, comfortable, charming and a bit off the beaten track. Loved it. Really, don't miss spending a day walking the 10 mile beach - you'll be more or less alone and it's absolutely gorgeous. Tanaya was a great host!! A top stay on the coast!

  • I stayed four nights at the Rose Cottage in December 2012 with my partner on a romantic getaway. I would definitely recommend it to couples or a small group of friends. The cottage is charming and cozy, just a few minutes' walk from the famous and almost surreal sand dunes and a short drive from Fort Bragg. It's set in a beautiful private garden and has a fun wood-burning stove inside to keep the place warm and cozy. The bed is extremely comfortable, and the bathroom has a nice shower/tub. As other reviews have noted, Tenaya met us on our arrival with some much-appreciated hot tea and left some delicious, homemade apple sauce and blackberry jam for us in the fridge. She was very friendly and helpful, giving us lots of tips on what to do and where to eat in town. The kitchen in the cottage has a gas oven, a gas stove, and lots of little appliances/tools for cooking. We bought food at the Safeway and Harvest Market in town and cooked most of our meals in the cottage, which was fun. We stayed during a rainstorm but managed to catch plenty of sun and clear afternoons for some nice exploring on the beach and the surrounding coastline. Tenaya told us that she and her husband lived in this cottage for several years, and it's clear that she cares a lot about the very well-kept property. No complaints at all. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Fort Bragg!

  • We had such an amazing time at the Rose Cottage! I could not have asked for a more wonderful way to celebrate my birthday weekend with my girlfriend. - The Cottage: The listing pictures don't do it justice. The cottage was immaculate and so incredibly charming. Perfect size for the two of us, complete with a toasty wood stove. Great little kitchen that was very well stocked for a full weekend of cooking. We could have holed ourselves up in the cottage all weekend if the dunes weren't so tempting. - The Setting: Beautifully landscaped yard and gardens. The property is set up in such a way that we were completely undisturbed by guests in other cottages on the property. Just a short walk down the private road to a MacKerricher Dunes access point. The Dunes themselves were stunning, I've never experienced anything quite like it. Just beyond them was a gorgeous stretch of beach with plenty of sand dollars to find while beach combing. We went out for 3 to 4 hours at a time and only came across a couple of people. - The Host: Tenaya was great! She greeted us promptly upon arrival with her cute little dog Dora to check us in and give us the grand tour of the cottage and gardens. She answered all our questions and supplied us with all the information we would need for the weekend. Tenaya created a very welcoming atmosphere. Homemade blackberry jam and muffin bites were waiting for us in the fridge along with fresh strawberries and coffee. On our last evening lounging on the patio, Tenaya stopped by and left us firewood so we could enjoy the fire pit. Perfect for toasting s'mores! Overall it was a terrific experience. Such a peaceful and serene environment providing us a much needed escape from the lights and sounds of the city. We cannot wait to come back!

  • We highly recommend! My husband and I loved the peacefulness and privacy this property offers. The muffins and homemade jam were delicious. The bonus was how close the cottage is to the beach. If you want a cozy carefree weekend this place is the spot!

  • As this was our first trip using airbnb, we had no idea what to expect. Tenaya's listing was better than described and she is a thoughtful, thorough and generous host. When we arrived Tenaya gave us a complete tour of the cottage, explained how everything worked, had the fridge stocked with delicious homemade muffins and ten mile plum jam as well as fresh strawberries. She also had a fire all set to light in the wood burning stove! The cottage is so cozily furnished and the wood deck surrounded by beautiful gardens so inviting that you almost don't want to leave but Tenaya even helps you to be adventurous and explore by explaining, in detail and very accurately, how to navigate to the dunes and the sand dollar beach as well as to the wonderful hammock that she has set up on the highest dune ready for contemplation and meditation in this wonderful and peaceful haven. Two nights was not enough and we hope to return to enjoy Tenaya's hospitality again in the near future.

  • Long story short: everything was perfect! The cabin itself was spotless, cozy, well-kept, and just the right size for two people. Of course we ended up spending more time outside than in: hanging out on the deck and in the yard, exploring the dunes (which were amazing), getting sunburned on the beach (bring sunblock), traipsing around Fort Bragg (great beer!), and so on. It's far enough from town that we had a real sense of privacy, but close enough that we didn't mind hopping into the car to grab a bottle of wine (or aloe for our sunburns). The beach was the emptiest I've ever been on, which was amazing. (We saw four people total: one nude sunbather and three people on horseback.) There were rumors of recent whale- and seal-sightings in the area, though we didn't have any luck in that department. Overall: a perfect getaway spot, highly recommended, twelve thumbs up.

  • Our stay at Ed and Tenaya's Rose Cottage was all that we hoped it would be. It was simple, peaceful, and radiant with the care that they had put into creating this charming little cottage and the beautiful gardens that surrounded it. Everywhere we looked we saw evidence of the eye of an artist and the skills of a master craftsmen. Ed and Tenaya were thoughtful, caring hosts. We will definitely recommend this to our friends. We also hope to return again ourselves.

  • Wonderful cozy cottage with everything One could wish for in order to power down and relax. Tenaya and Ed were the sweetest hosts providing us even with some munchies to get comfortable. The dunes, the Ocean, the surrounding made the stay perfect. Definetly grade A :)

Private loft with bath and private entrance. Ocean view close to beaches. Located 6 miles north of Fort Bragg Ca.
    Quiet rural neighbor hood.
  • Kenneth's loft was the perfect place to spend a weekend get-away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is located well outside of town, yet was easy to find and not too far from any type get-away need. The loft was outfitted with all the essentials including the ability to throw together a bit of breakfast. Overall a very pleasant experience. I definitely look forward to visiting again.

  • We had a wonderful stay with Kenneth and his wife. The house was easy to find. To echo other reviews, if you're coming from the north, take care to give yourself a lot of time to get there. The roads are very windy and narrow. The room was spacious and private. Towels and soap, coffee, tea, a few games and movies provided. Bed was comfy. The little fireplace did a great job of warming up the room. :)

  • Although we were only there for 1 night, we instantly wished we could have stayed for a week! What a beautiful room in a perfect location! We sat out on the deck and watched the sun set over the beach. Perfect spot if you want some peace and relaxation! Would highly recommend. Kenneth and his wife are very lovely and have two beautiful dogs (all of whom we got along well with!).

    Sophie2016-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful, charming space, actually much bigger than the photos suggest! Tastefully decorated, beautifully appointed, I would have no problem staying here for a week or more, it would be very comfortable. The only downside, and it is quite minor, is the proximity to Hwy 1, during the day you can hear the traffic clearly. At night, however, there really isn't any traffic to speak of, our sleep was peaceful and undisturbed.

    Royce2016-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Kenneth and his place were great. Exactly how it was described online. The room is very big and you have everything you need while your staying in the area. Right off the scenic highway you can see the ocean from the balcony! It was a quiet and comfortable stay a few miles from town. I would stay when in the area again.

    Andrew2017-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • Stay Here! This place exceeded our expectations. It is a huge space, clean, and cozy. It's an amazing value for the area.

    Jeffrey2016-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Kenneth's place was wonderful and very quiet. We even witnessed a buck running in the yard one morning and could see the ocean waves from the deck. Everything was clean and comfortable and the room was very big. He even provided cups, plates, silverware and coffee which was much appreciated! This is a wonderful spot on a beautiful coastline filled with many gorgeous beaches.

Peace and quiet with room to play at the coast end of a private lane off Hwy1 Our fully equipped 2 bed 2 bath home is set on an acre of land with cypress trees, redwoods and fruit trees in a large yard next door to the dunes of Mckerricker State Park.
Our home has everything you'll need: A fully equipped kitchen, smart TV, phone & ipod friendly stereo/internet radio... a woodstove, comfortable furniture, hardwood floors, a new queen bed in each bedroom, with cozy cotton linens... 2 full bathrooms... fast wireless, ambience... central gas heat for your comfort... games, toys, old movies on CD & VCR to play... a great yard full of tress, flowers and abundant with birds... we have spacious decks, front & back, with a hot springs hot tub and barbeque on the back deck and comfy outdoor furniture... best of all: miles of dunes and beach to explore next door to our property in MacKerricher State Park. The beach is just a 1/4 mile walk across the dunes on a trail from our home. Wildlife is plentiful with everything from quail, doves, and talking crows... through jackrabbits, geese and ducks... on the beach you might see whales in season, harbor seals, geese, pelicans and a wide variety of seabirds from gulls to sandpipers and the local endangered species: the snowy plover.
Our neighborhood is a quiet residential area on a private lane, with local families and a few other vacation properties. Please drive very slowly and treat our neighbors with respect and gratitude for sharing this beautiful area.
  • A beautiful, peaceful property adjacent to unlimited dunes and coastline to explore! Pictures and descriptions of MacKerricher State Park don't do it justice- it's amazing. The property is accurately described in the listing. The furniture and beds are new and comfortable. The bedrooms and living/dining room are roomy. The bathrooms and kitchen are cozier, but they have everything you need. Pamela was very responsive, helpful, and friendly. Reservations, check in, and check out were quick and trouble free. Don't be dissuaded by the lack of reviews. Once the word gets out that this is an awesome place to stay, that will quickly change!

  • This clean, quiet, and well-appointed home was the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. It served as the perfect hub for our exploration of the coast. Pamela provided all the comforts of home. I highly recommend Cypress Dunes.

  • When my sister and I booked our weekend at Pamela's Cypress Dunes we did not realize we would be among the guests. It was a 60th birthday present for our mom meant for her and her friends, but she chose to bring family and we are glad she did! The property is beautiful and well kept. The house is clean, comfortable and well stocked with towels blankets, dishes, almost everything you need! The beach access was the best part, even though it was storming like crazy when we were there! The "trail" was nothing short of AMAZING! My family is very outdoorsy and we had so much fun navigating through the largest dunes we have ever seen(you could totally get lost in the desert like terrain), picking up sand dollars, identifying new plants... And Glass beach in Fort Bragg is a must see! We are from coastal Northern California so it was especially nice finding a place somewhat close that can offer us a completely different view of our ocean and new things to explore. We will be back!

  • Pamela was a great host, she was very accommodating, responsive and check in was easy. The place was very comfortable and had plenty of towels, blankets, sheets and the kitchen is well stocked in case you want to dine in. This was a girlfriends getaway, Cypress Dunes was perfect for us, we enjoyed the accommodations, serenity of the location, sitting in the spa and star gazing. The hikes to the beach were awesome, as well as going into town for lunch and sightseeing. Visiting nearby MacKerricher, State Park was a great experience too. The ocean views are a true representation of Northern California. Great location for a getaway!!!

  • Such a great experience staying here this weekend. Comfortably housed my group of 6. The grill requires coal, bring your own along with lighter fluid. Also the hot tub comfortably fit 6 people, if they only put their feet in which is what we did. If you plan to submerge your self, hot tub fits 2 people max. Kitchen is fully equipped, has about everything you need. I would stay here again if I decide to return to have a weekend in fort bragg.

  • Well-equipped home with everything you need for a getaway. Really cozy and perfect for a visit to Mendocino with our friends and two dogs. We loved watching the best VHS movies from the '90's, using the hot tub, and cooking in the kitchen.

Kayak from the front yard in a spectacular marine preserve with seals, otters, and birds galore! Miles of beach to explore and have to yourself! Fantastic natural setting, yet still close to town. Unparalleled hiking and biking. Modern house with all the amenities. Big deck, BBQ, fireplace and 3.6 acres.
This is my second home, although I stay here a lot.
  • Clay, We absolutely LOVED your place. It has been our favorite vacation rental to date. As a family of five, we are always looking for a beautiful location, somewhat secluded and very scenic. We got all of those and more. We can't thank you enough for allowing the use of your canoe, kayak and paddle board. We were beginners and figured it out quickly and went on an adventure both into the estuary where we saw otters playing and swimming along the shoreline as we went along, slowly floated up near a seal sun bathing on a piece of driftwood and many birds. It was serene and stunning. We also sailed/boated out towards the ocean a bit and decided to go ashore to check out the beach, caves and shoreline. This house is perfect. The only thing, and believe me when I say only, and this does not hinder the stay at (URL HIDDEN) a hot tub. If it was perched there on the deck for sunset soaks...perfect. But (URL HIDDEN) was amazing!! And thank you for allowing our dogs!! They had a great time as well. 'Til next time! - The Bradley Family

  • This is a charming two-bedroom cottage on a quiet estuary. We saw an otter from the house and lots of birds. Far enough from Fort Bragg to be quiet, but close enough for convenience. Highly recommended.

  • Everything about this place is amazing. We loved canoeing right from our front yard, especially to the oceanside beach at sunset. Everything was quiet and relaxed, we didnt see many people around during our stay. Our dog loved swimming and watching the ducks. Seals swim by frequently as well. The owner was super sweet and helpful. We will definetly come and stay again.

  • Clay was a great host. We took longer than we had expected getting up to 10 mile river (4th of July traffic out of San Francisco, Petaluma, Santa Rosa....), but Clay waited around to welcome us, show us around briefly, and most importantly show us his various watercraft and tell us how to operate them. Clay's kayaks, canoe and paddleboard transformed our experience of the 10-mile river. We have stayed several times at the subdivision at the top of the bluffs, and we love the beach and the views of the ocean. Most of all, though, we love the 6 miles of dunes and practically deserted beach to the South that are part of MacKerricher State Park. With the kayaks, access to these beaches and dunes was simple, regardless of the water level at the mouth of the river. And the river upstream was an area we had never explored before. In addition to a new view of the landscape (which was very beautiful), we could enjoy a storm of swallows around their nests under the big 10 mile river bridge, a trio of basking seals on some big logs trapped in the river, and a charming family of river otters who talked to each other continually in voices ranging from grumbling squabbles to high whistling squeaks. We are a family of 4, and our kids (boy and girl) are too old to still share a room, but we moved a mattress out from one of the two bedrooms into the main living area to create a workable solution. There was still plenty of room for us to eat together or sit and read, and honestly most of our time was spent outside. Sitting outside on the deck for breakfast we were often able to watch one or more of the local ospreys gliding around. One morning we watched a bald eagle carrying a snake land on a big snag on the other side of the river, and have her breakfast too! The house was warm, clean and well equipped. Clay was a very welcoming and helpful host. Two of the kayaks have pedal propulsion, which makes getting upriver very easy. These were not working on the day we arrived, but Clay fixed them and brought them over very quickly, and this further enhanced our already wonderful experience. We are very much looking forward to returning to Clay's place on the 10 mile river.
