The Tower rooms are in a refurbished historic defensive tower (dating from 1574) providing a mini castle experience. Through a huge stone entrance, into an inner panelled entrance hall and through a private door up an ancient and narrow staircase to a tiny sitting area with shower room and kitchenette off. Finally up again with a spiral stone staircase leading to a romantic and secluded upper chamber. Medieval and bijoux - a micro experience of being a Laird or Lady of the House for the night.
We are based by the River Leader (also known as the Leader Water) in an exceptionally beautiful part of the Scottish Borders. The locale is littered with monuments, fine walks, stately homes, lovely shopping towns like Melrose and St. Boswells, hills to walk up and beautiful scenery. All this within an hours journey to Edinburgh by car or by train.

No tengo ninguna queja.

Self-built from scratch! Triple glazed, solar electric and water, heat pump, and a log fire. Mountain and road cycling possibilities, with lock-up and cleaning facilities, walking, riding, fishing, golfing, kayaking, climbing, and exploration. Lovely pubs and restaurants, all located in a picturesque and historic landscape. Used for family birthdays, reunions, baby showers, corporate business planning, surprises, retreats, the Fringe, overseas visitors and a half-way house for Scottish/English!
A friend once said that the Scottish Borders is a land for fairy tales. Our house is right in the middle of a quite magical landscape. The house is old and new, it looks old on the outside, but new on the inside. It can be as quiet as putting your head under a pillow, you feel your stress leaving in minutes. The dark skies at night show you galaxies and shooting stars. Lying on the lawn looking up at night is best. The deer are often seen in the field next door, with badgers, foxes, and many hare. Bats and house martins are busy catching the insects and keep the place remarkably clear. There are lots of pheasant and partridge too, and yes, we have two pear trees. We actively encourage the house martins as there is nothing better than sitting out with a glass of wine in the evening having them swoop over your head as they feed their young in their nests under the rafters. We have placed catch trays for droppings under the nests, but while you are there from time to time the birds may miss! We are in the country. Their cleanliness we can't always guarantee. The supermarkets are open till ten and are only a couple of miles away, a perfect combination of town and country. Buy your eggs from the neighbours, 100% fresh. And there are real farmers markets for great food. Family gatherings: Over the last few years the house has often been used for large family gatherings and events. Birthdays have been celebrated here from 30 to 80 years old. We use it for the same purpose. Open access, downstairs ensuite bedroom, huge kitchen and dining area where people sit chatting to the early hours. And in the summer, the same activity just moves to the patio. Self Builders - If you are thinking of self-build I am more than happy to explain the process. Yes, it was hard, but the end result is fantastic as you will find.
Brilliant App for the Scottish Borders - "SCOTLAND STARTS HERE", Apple or Android. Makes planning really easy. In the Borders, there is plenty for both the locals and visitors to enjoy as spring arrives. Mountain Biking Between Glentress and Keilder with lots of other off-road opportunities. As keen cyclists ourselves we can provide lock-up facilities, bike washing facilities and various tools. Golfing Golfers can play more than 20 courses on the best-selling "Freedom of the Fairways" pass: from the championship 18 holes at Roxburghe and Cardrona, to Britain's most extraordinary golf course, over the crashing waves of the North Sea at Eyemouth. For more details look for "scotlandgolfcourses" (slash) Scottish-borders (slash) on the web. More sports Archers have the opportunity to rove the forest to simulate hunting for prey, while clay-shooters can test their aim on the rapid-fire, realistic flushes. In gentle waters, fishermen can cast a fly in the hope of hooking the wild trout, grayling and salmon teeming in the Tweed, the queen of salmon rivers, and its tributaries. Whether you want to walk, run, ride, fish, rally, swim, cycle, sail, golf, abseil, kayak or climb, these are the adventures awaiting you in the contrasting local landscapes of hills, loch, moor, forest, meadow, river and coast. Out and about. Walkers can hike the Eildon, Cheviot or Lammermuir hills, and rock-climb the crags of Ruberslaw, yet also explore the beaches and coves of East Berwickshire. Road cyclists can discover the ranging countryside at their own pace on the quiet lanes of the many sign-posted cycleways, while mountain bikers can enjoy the world-class trails of 7stanes Glentress Forest in the Tweed Valley and also at Newcastleton. Off-roaders, rally drivers and even nostalgic holiday-makers in love with VW camper vans can find the freedom to roam the area's varied terrains. Motorcyclists ride the 3,000 km of roads that made local sons of speed Jimmie Guthrie and Steve Hislop champions. Horse-riders can canter and gallop through the woodland trails of Scotland's horse country. If history is your interest, there are a number of excellent historic properties to whet your appetite. I cannot recommend highly enough a visit to Abbotsford, home of Walter Scott. And for those youngsters looking for something a little extra, a number of venues run special activities to suit. And at the end of the day, exhausted, you can relax with delicious food and drink in a local eatery before you start something completely different the next morning. Selected works from the local paper, the Southern Reporter.

Desayuno encantador, realmente no me puedo quejar.

Totalmente recomendado.

In a peaceful village it offers country walks from the door, and combines tranquility and style with warmth and comfort. The perfect romantic, rural retreat at any time of the year.
Our cosy, romantic cottage has been renovated and insulated to a high standard. We've used gentle Farrow & Ball colours, comfy sofas and bed plus beautiful pieces of art by local artists to create a lovely, relaxing environment. The cottage is our own holiday home and as we don't live locally we employ a housekeeper to clean and prepare for our guests. This means you can expect a high standard of cleanliness and professionally laundered bedding and towels. LIVING/DINING ROOM: Comfy sofas to snuggle on, a log burner with fuel supplied and a cosy corner for dining. There's a wide range of books and DVDs (including some about the history of the local area), Country Living and Dog Friendly magazines, games and colouring books with coloured pens/pencils for time spent relaxing indoors. Complimentary tea, coffee, sugar, sweetener, herb teas and a basic range of herbs, spices and cooking oil are supplied. The stone bench outside the front door is the perfect spot to sit on a summer's evening with a glass of wine to watch the sun setting. The side/rear area is gated and secure for dogs. Guests have access to a lockable outbuilding enabling secure storage of fishing rods, bikes etc. We have left our own bikes and cycling helmets in the outbuilding and guests are welcome to use them AT THEIR OWN RISK. We've also left folding chairs, a windbreak and a coolbox for picnics and days out at Northumberland's coast. The house is situated on a quiet road just a short walk from the centre of the village of Branxton with its charming village hall, beautiful 12th century church, the 'smallest visitors' centre in the world' and a way-marked walking route around the historic Flodden battlefield. The village, with just 60 dwellings and no shops or pubs of its own, is surrounded by farmland making it wonderfully free from traffic noise and unusually peaceful, especially in the evening. FACILITIES FOR BABIES: A high chair is available upon request. DOGS: Two small or one medium sized well-behaved dogs are welcome but, for the sake of our other guests we'd appreciate it if you would try to keep them out of the bedroom and off the furniture. We provide dog towels, bowls, torches for late night wee-walks and a supply of emergency poo bags. There's also a handy outside tap for cleaning up boots and paws after muddy walks. Please mention if you are bringing your dog at the time of booking so we can leave them some treats. PARKING: Parking on the quiet road right outside the cottage is free and unlimited. The area behind the property is our neighbour's access route to/from his garage so must be left clear at all times.
The peaceful village of Branxton is perfectly positioned for exploring the Northumberland National park, walking in the Cheviot Hills, fishing on the Tweed, or visiting Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and the Farnes. It is just a few miles from the border with Scotland and roughly equidistant from the lovely market town of Kelso with its Flemish-style square and coastal Berwick-upon-Tweed. The cottage is also a perfect base for trips to explore the wonderful cities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh as they are both just over an hour's drive away. The village itself is rich in history being adjacent to site of the Battle of Flodden, fought in 1513. The battlefield trail, with interpretation boards explaining the stages of the battle which led to the tragic death of James IV of Scotland, provides a fascinating walk around the area with beautiful views over the village and across the countryside. There are many other lovely walks to be taken direct from the cottage or just a short drive away and OS maps of the area are provided for guests' use. We also provide a selection of books and DVDs about the history of the area, the Battle of Flodden and the Border Reivers who raided the entire Border country along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the 17th century.

Perfect for two, the Old Mill is a modern, cosy and eclectic conversion of 1700s water mill near the Royal Burgh of Lauder. This romantic bolthole is spacious and inviting - it's somewhere you can slow down and retreat from busy lives. Soak in a deep bath or rainforest shower, enjoy Meraki spa products, warmth from the woodburning stove, drink good coffee, cook, bake, read, or simply relax in the space around you. Edinburgh is just 40 mins away; most of the Scottish Borders is within 20 mins.
Dod Mill’s old, industrial water mill has undergone a thoroughly modern redesign as a rural escape for two. It’s unique and stylish interiors, thick stone walls, spacious living space and mezzanine bedroom with feature bath make this a wonderful place to retreat from day-to-day life. The Old Mill retains many original features including the stable-style door at the entrance. You’ll pass through the porch into the large and open living space on the ground floor. The kitchen and dining areas open out into a double-height living space with a huge woodburning stove as the focal point of the room. Decorated throughout in Farrow & Ball, the space is light yet cosy with soft grey painted floors (underfloor heating), interesting fabrics and handmade shutters. The living area has a large sofa-bed (add guests on request), a thick vintage Moroccan rug, and some interesting decorative touches like a French balloon mould and antique chapati rolling pins. You’ll find a TV with Freesat (all standard UK channels), a DVD player, board games and a selection of books and maps. WiFi is available throughout the property. The rich aubergine-coloured kitchen is equipped for relaxed, holiday cooking. It has a sociable kitchen island, fan oven, 2-ring hob, dishwasher, a large fridge-freezer, kettle, toaster and a Nespresso machine for those in need of their daily caffeine fix. You’ll find artisan-made mugs, crockery, cutlery and glassware, as well as a cake stand, wooden boards and a good selection of serving platters and dishes. The large oak-topped dining table seats 6 so there is plenty of space to spread out, or invite friends over from other properties at Dod Mill (or in the area). You can also ask for the table to be extended to 12 if you’d like to entertain a larger group while staying in the Old Mill. Head upstairs to the mill’s original mezzanine floor, now converted to a bedroom. The super-comfy bed is king size and is made-up with anti-allergy bedding and pure Egyptian cotton linens. Have a long soak in the bedroom’s roll top bath, with Meraki spa-style products. The bath’s big enough to share, or enjoy on your own with a good book and a glass of wine. The en-suite shower room has a rainforest-style shower, soft-scented Meraki soap, shampoo and conditioner plenty of soft, fluffy towels. There is an additional “downstairs loo”. Head out the door by the woodburning stove and you’ll find an outdoor table and chairs and a small woodland garden area.
Old Mill sits within Dod Mill, a unique and interesting historic site in the Scottish Borders near Lauder. For over 300 years, this was home to an industrial water mill where wheat, barley and oats were milled. There is also a kiln house where the grain was dried before milling. Dod Mill is 4 miles from the Royal Burgh of Lauder - which has fantastic amenities for visitors. There is a gorgeous little deli, The Spotty Dog, a lovely fruit & veg shop, The Purple Plum, art gallery / coffee shop, pubs, bakery, post office, petrol station and small supermarket (Co-Op). Lauder is completed with its own fairytale castle (Thirlestane Castle). The Old Mill at Dod Mill is also very close to wonderful Scottish Borders towns and historic sites. Melrose Abbey, Kelso Abbey and Dryburgh Abbey are also each within 20-25 minutes. Other places of real note include the home of tartan, Lochcarron Visitor Centre, and the Borders Distillery & Visitor Centre (whisky and craft gin). The Borders has a number of superb festivals and events over the year, including the acclaimed Borders Book Festival, the Borders Art Fair, Tour of the Borders (cycling), the Great British Food Festival (at Floors Castle) to name a few. The stunning heritage coastline is just a short half-hour drive away with miles of pristine sandy beaches, jolly pubs serving the freshest fish and chips, and picture postcard coastal villages with charming galleries and gift shops. Experience the exhilarating thrill of kitesurfing at Bamburgh, coasteering at Beadnell or perhaps just the simple pleasures of a picnic and a game of beach cricket on sands which remain almost deserted even in the summer months. History buffs will be enchanted by the rich heritage of the area, where dramatic castles and grand stately homes punctuate the landscape here, including imposing Bamburgh perched on its rocky outcrop above Bamburgh Beach; Alnwick, star of the Harry Potter films; or Chillingham, said to be the most haunted castle in Britain and home to the only wild cattle in the world. Fishing is available on the River Till about a ten minute drive and is one of the area's best kept secrets with an impressive sea trout run each spring said to be the best in the country. Please ensure you state at time of booking if you require the additional beds or it will not be made up for your stay. En suite shower room with walk-in shower, whb and WC. Leading from bedroom two is a small entrance hall with additional storage space for outdoor clothing which is accessed directly from the outside thereby giving guests in this bedroom their own private access if required. Garden and grounds To the rear of the property is a decked patio area which leads to a gravelled seating area with a picnic table and children's swing. Beyond is a fenced lawned area with a paddock beyond with a rope swing. The patio area and garden are south facing and offer superb views over open fields to the hills. The rear garden is fully enclosed for the safety of dogs and children. A charcoal kettle barbecue is available for guest use. External storage Adjacent to the cottage is an outhouse with a sink, deep freeze and tumble dryer. It is lockable and ideal for storing bikes, tack and outdoor equipment. Paddock Beyond the garden is a paddock available to any guests wishing to bring horses with them. With sufficient notice, stabling can also be arranged in the barn adjacent to the paddock. Parking There is private parking for several cars to the side of the house. Games / picnic room A neighbouring barn provides an indoor games room / picnic area with picnic tables, wood burning stove, full size table tennis table, a pool table and table football. Facilities for babies A travel cot and high chair are available on request. Dogs Two dogs are welcome at The Bothy. We would ask that owners adhere to the guidelines in the pre-arrival information with regard to dogs. IMPORTANT - Heating and hot water Central heating at The Bothy is provided by a log burning stove. During the winter months the stove will be lit in advance so that the cottage is warm on arrival. The system is very efficient providing that logs are added a couple of times a day; each morning the fire needs to be flared up so that it is burning sufficiently for the pump to operate allowing hot water to circulate around the radiators. In the evening, the logs need replenishing before guests go to bed and with the vents closed there is sufficient residual heat to keep the fire alight through the night. If required, additional heating is provided by two oil-filled radiators. An immersion heater provides additional hot water if required. The system is surprisingly easy to use but it is important that guests contact prior to booking if they have any concerns. Wi-Fi and mobile telephone reception Wi-Fi is provided in the open plan kitchen, dining and seating area, however the signal can be intermittent and it is important to note that due to the thickness of the walls the signal may not reach other rooms of the property. Please note that there is no mobile telephone reception at The Bothy. There is however a landline at the property for guest use. Excess use will be charged back to guests. Catering Home-made ready meals can be prepared and delivered to your property during your stay. Prices and further details can be discussed and arranged in advance by contacting the owner - detailed on pre-arrival documentation when booking the property. Alternatively further details can be found in the cottage during your stay.
Superb walks from the doorstep range from leisurely rambles along the Bowmont Water and surrounding farmland to more challenging hill and moorland treks in the Cheviot Hills. With more than 600 miles of footpaths and bridleways to choose from in the National Park alone, walkers are spoilt for choice. Cyclists are equally well provided for with miles of marked routes and quiet country lanes to explore offering everything from meandering river valley saunters to wild open moorland blasts. Popular routes include the Pennine Cycleway and the Reivers Cycle Route, both of which run through the National Park. There can be no better way of enjoying Northumberland's beautiful scenery than from the back of a horse. The stables at Kimmerston just down the road offer riding in the Cheviot Hills as well as rides on the spectacular sandy beaches on nearby Holy Island. The paddock behind the cottage is available to guests wishing to bring their own horses and stabling can usually be arranged with sufficient notice. History enthusiasts of all ages will be enthralled by the area's rich and often bloody history that has left its imprint on the region, giving rise to a myriad of impressive castles to explore. Including imposing Bamburgh perched on its rocky outcrop above Bamburgh Beach, Alnwick, star of the Harry Potter films and Chillingham, said to be the most haunted castle in Britain and home to the only wild cattle in the world. Some of the cleanest and emptiest beaches in England can be found on Northumberland's spectacular Heritage Coastline; 25 miles of rocky coves and golden sands that remain almost deserted even during the summer months. The beach at nearby Bamburgh is well worth a visit at any time of the year whether for walking, kite-surfing, or sandcastle building. From nearby Seahouses, take a tour to the Farne Islands, to see the resident colonies of Grey Seals and an impressive array of birdlife including Puffins. One of our favourite attractions, popular with old and young alike, is the delightful miniature steam railway which runs from Heatherslaw to Etal. On arrival in Etal, the visitor is well advised to leave the train and spend an hour or two in the village, exploring the ruins of Etal Castle and its museum, visiting the Black Bull Pub, village shop, Tea Room, the Church, the pine furniture makers' showroom, or simply enjoying a walk or picnic beside the river, before catching a later train back to Heatherslaw. Here, on the other side of the bridge from the train station, the working water driven corn mill, café, and visitors centre are also all well worth a visit. Fishing is available on the Bowmont Water which runs within easy walking distance of The Bothy. The River Till is only a ten minute drive and is one of the area's best kept secrets with an impressive sea trout run each spring said to be the best in the country. Trout permits are available for as little as £5 per day and rods, reels and waders can be hired locally. For excellent local amenities, The Bothy is 9 miles from the charming ancient market town of Wooler which has a variety of local, independent shops including a butcher and grocer selling a good range of local produce, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The ancient towns of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Kelso and Duns are also nearby and Edinburgh is an easy day trip either approximately 1.5 hours by car or 45 minutes on the train from Berwick.

Gypsy Palace is a beautiful self catering cottage that can sleep up to three people and it has a fascinating history. Situated in the Scottish Borders, it was once home to the Kings & Queens of the Scottish Gypsies. MINIMUM BOOKING OF THREE NIGHTS. Check in on either Monday or Friday though contact us with your dates and we'll help if we can.
The Gypsy Palace is a quaint and utterly unique detached cottage set in its own mature gardens. Its probably 200+ years old and is steeped in history and folklore. After falling into disrepair some years ago, it was lovingly restored and rebuilt and its now a really wonderful place, full of character and atmosphere. The Palace accommodation consists of a cosy living room with a stone fireplace and log burning stove (though there is of course full central heating too). We have a flat-screen TV along with Freeview and a DVD player, a Bose Ipod/MP3 dock and we also have free unlimited WiFi but we find that most of our guests come here to get away from it all and to unwind and relax. There are wonderful views of the valley which can be enjoyed from the window seat and its a very peaceful place indeed. There are some unusual features too such as the stained glass window between the kitchen and living room, the arched mirror above the fireplace and of course the small stone floored dining area which has a most picturesque cast iron arched feature window with diamond panes, dating from the 19th century. Its all tastefully decorated and furnished with the emphasis on cosiness and comfort while trying to show off a little of the Palace's history. We have collected various old photographs and paintings which reflect the history of the cottage and the gypsy kings and queens who used to live here. Gypsy Palace has appeared in many magazines and newspapers including The Scotsman, Scottish Field, Tiny Homes magazine, Scottish Life, the Sunday Times, Home magazine and many others. It has also appeared in many books about Scottish and Gypsy history. Due to changeover/cleaning costs, we are unable to take bookings of less than three nights.
This is perfect walking country - we are right on the Pennine Way. In fact there is a wonderful walk straight from the door of the cottage: you simply turn right, out from the cottage and within a few minutes and as the road climbs, the views get better and better. Within 10 minutes, you really feel as though you are in another world with the most stunning views over the Cheviot Hills. Of course, dogs are welcome to our cottage.

17 The Green is a charming studio cottage in the middle of the ancient village of Swinton in the Scottish Borders.
Swinton dates from the 11th century or earlier, and is associated with the Swinton family, who took their name from the settlement. In 1769, the village was re-designed around the village green (one of only two in the Scottish borders) where the property is located. A market was created, now marked by the market cross. The village's symbol is a boar, which can be found on the market cross, above the door of the kirk, and carved in to the pulpit.

This comfortable and peaceful one-bedroom annexe is the perfect retreat for a couple. Situated in the pretty conservation village of Gavinton, a few miles outside Duns, the property sits on a 50-acre organic farm. Our annexe is spacious and relaxing, the ideal romantic rural escape. Edinburgh is just 50 mins away and there much to see in the Borders.
With the rapidly developing Coronavirus crisis and an increasing number of people self-isolating, our property could be the perfect escape for those wishing to avoid contact with others potentially infected or self-isolating. Our normal daily life here on the farm is virtually one of self-isolation and days go by when we do not come into contact with anyone, yet still being on the edge of and part of a small village of 300 inhabitants. We have 50 acres of farmland that you can walk around and look at the animals and hear the wildlife, without seeing another soul. Isolated beauty spots, hill walking, quiet beaches and river walks and lots of cycling can also be found around and about our property, again without having to come into close contact with another human. The annexe cottage is self-contained with private parking and its own separate entrance and therefore is ideal for escaping social contact without feeling too isolated from life and human habitation. The annexe cottage is deep cleaned thoroughly after every visit using alcohol and hydrogen peroxide products. This includes cleaning of all door handles and hard surfaces in addition to all kitchen equipment being re-washed after every guest visit. In nearby Duns (less than five minutes by car) there is a superb fresh fish and delicatessen shop, award winning butcher, small Co-op supermarket, pharmacy, newsagents and wine store/ice cream parlour. All of which have continued to be well stocked in spite of the reported panic buying elsewhere. We would also be more than happy to assist with any shopping you may require during your stay if you require it. Our farmhouse annexe has been newly renovated to a high standard. With underfloor heating throughout, Egyptian Cotton bedding and Hungarian goose down pillows, in a tranquil rural environment, we are sure you will sleep well and enjoy your retreat here. We provide guests with complimentary organic free-range eggs, cake, tea/coffee, and milk on arrival. We have bookshelves filled with a selection of books and a number of board games to play. Our living room has an Aromatherapy Humidifier with lavender oil that guests can use throughout their stay. The farmhouse annexe offers a new kitchen with combi oven/grill/microwave, dishwasher, super speed Wifi, and outdoor seating area. Guests can enjoy the beautiful sunrises from the kitchen window (as shown in the photos). The living area has a Smart TV and a cosy wood burning stove with unlimited supply of wood. The bathroom has a powerful shower and bath and we provide soft, white, fluffy towels and lavender and geranium 'Faith in Nature' Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash. We provide maps, local tourist information and a walking route map of our farm. Guests have private off road parking right outside the annexe.
Alexa runs yoga classes at the yoga studio beside the annexe cottage on Mondays 9.45-11am, 6-7pm and Thursdays 6-7pm (£8 per class) which you are welcome to attend if there is space available. Private yoga lessons also available upon request. Gavinton has a number of beautiful walks and cycle routes nearby and is within walking distance (30 mins) of Duns, which is a lovely walk through the hills. The nearby River Tweed has excellent fishing and there are many horse riding stables nearby. In Duns there are a number of boutique coffee shops, pubs, takeaways, community cinema and restaurants. There is a lovely swimming pool with a sauna and fitness classes. In Duns there is plenty to do including a walk around and visit to the 14th Century Duns Castle, the Jim Clark Museum and the nearby Manderston and Paxton House. You can also visit the seaside town of Berwick-upon-Tweed which is a 25 min drive and has a train line to Edinburgh, Dunbar and Newcastle. Or simply relax and enjoy the slower pace of life.

Centrally located across from the town’s churchyard, Apartment two, Spread Eagle House is a modern, cosy getaway that’s ideal for families, with accommodation for up to four people. This ground-floor apartment is based in a lovely spot with peaceful views out onto the churchyard, making for a fabulous base when exploring the gorgeous market town of Kelso and the surrounding area. Not many apartments have a 12th century Abbey as a close neighbour!
Kelso is a bustling market town with lots going on and great to explore on foot. With the magnificent 12th Century Abbey as a neighbour you can walk to many fabulous eating places and places of interest. EPC rating = D

Whippet Lodge is a beautifully cosy yet deceptively large, traditional stone cottage in the ancient village of Swinton. Once belonging to the Swinton family, and built from local 'Swinton Pink' sandstone, the cottage is steps from spectacular countryside - perfect for walkers, photographers, artists and nature lovers. There is a dog friendly pub serving quality food just across road. Dog friendly with a large enclosed rear garden, we are well located for both the Borders and Northumberland.
Whippet Lodge owners, Musician and Songwriter Gary and Illustrator and Designer Helen, find the cottage the perfect place to relax, work and be inspired. The peace and quiet is priceless, and they'd like to share their bolt-hole with you when they aren't using it. Gary and Helen are happy to be able to let out the whole house to up to four guests, and if you'd like to bring your pet, the charge is £10 per animal per stay. The décor is colourful yet relaxing, and reflects the surrounding area and wildlife, as well as the couple's love for vintage and the unusual. Whippet Lodge has many thoughtful touches such as a slow cooker, so that explorers can have a hot meal waiting for them when they return from their adventures, a Tassimo coffee machine (and otherwise fully equipped kitchen), doggy towels, bowls and blankets, spare duvets for those chillier evenings, remote controlled heaters so guests can have their room toasty warm before getting out of bed and a lovely old deep enamel bath to soak in. Other amenities include a fully working open fire, with a starter supply of kindling and logs, a selection of herbal teas, as well as a start up of milk, tea and coffee, a selection of DVD's, games and jigsaws, WI-FI, and an Amazon Firestick so that guests can log into their favourite TV and Film apps on the big screen.
Swinton dates to the 11th century or earlier, and is associated with the Swinton family, who took their name from the settlement. In 1769, the village was re-designed and a market was created, now marked by the market cross. (Whippet Lodge was built some time between then and 1865, which is as far back as records allow at present). A parish church was built and still stands today. In the churchyard, the Swintons have their own burial enclosure. In 1843, the Free Church of Swinton was built, but in the 1900s the spire was removed and it became the local village hall. According to oral tradition, the name of the village is derived from the number of wild boars the land was once infested with. Swinton House, 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the village, dates in its current form to 1800, and was the residence of many of the Swinton family. It was built to replace an earlier house, which was destroyed by fire in the late 18th century. Both the house and the nearby 18th century dovecote are protected as category A listed buildings. There is a very pleasant pub, The Wheatsheaf, which serves good quality food and drink, just across the road from The Green. A small children's play area, picnic tables and football nets are also on The Green, just outside Whippet Lodge in fact. Almost like having your own private park, with the kids in view and calling distance.
