  • This room/apartment was amazing and ivor was a very nice host. Picked us straight from the boat and helped us with what we needed. The location is very good, just one street from the seafront street with a lot of restaurants and also close to historical buildings. The room/apartment was cozy with the interior, big kitchen and bathroom, big sofa and tv + terass and pool in the building next door. Overall, a very nice plave to stay. The only minus could be that as the location is very much in the central of where much people are moving, it could be a little noicy some times.

  • This place is the penthouse of Petley's hotel, right in the center of Lamu town, just back from the main jetty. It's effectively two bedrooms and had everything I needed for a weeklong stay - small fridge, microwave, swimming pool, a lounge at the front of the hotel with tables and couches, and a place to grab a quick bite to eat right outside. As others have noted, it can be a bit noisy, but that comes with staying in Lamu town, as opposed to Shella or along one of the beaches. Ivor was also very responsive and arranged someone to meet me at the airport. Definitely recommended.

  • Very very very beautiful House ,have a very big room

    2017-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • If you come to Lamu, this is the place to stay. It's right off the Jetti and Ivor is a fantastic host. The room is beautiful - an island paradise.

    Clint2016-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Ivor's place is centrally located, and up a few stories so there is nice windflow that keeps it cool. He installed a new fan in one room to make sure we were comfortable, and available if we needed anything but not overbearing. A wonderful vacation spot, so long as you are okay with staying in town and the accompanying hustle and bustle outside your door. Personally, i like it more than staying in Shela.

    Alex2017-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Petley's Inn was great and the room was really amazing, being the penthouse. The manager Bonface was super helpful with everything and even was very accommodating when my flight was canceled and I had to spend an additional night. Peltey's is right on the water in Lamu old town right in the center of the docks, so it's really a perfect location.

    Jeffrey2016-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • I loved the place. The room was spacious and very well ventilated. The pool was inviting especially in the hot afternoons. However, the mosques can get loud at the dawn call to prayer. Street life can also be heard from the room, but it isn't intrusive. Good value for money. Overall would recommend.

    Ruth2016-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • A great place! Very good value for money. Perfectly located to explore Lamu. Communication, availability and service were great. Highly recommend Ivor's place!

Amu House is a fully restored 16th century Swahili house with 7 comfortable, self contained guest rooms each with its own veranda on the two upper floors. We serve a full breakfast downstairs in the historic original Swahili house, and have a beautiful breezy rooftop with a hammock and day beds for all our guests to enjoy. Conveniently located just a minute's walk from the jetty and the seafront, Amu House is perfectly situated. A quiet, private home in the middle of a historic paradise!
Amu House on Lamu Island is located off the coast of Northern Kenya. The breezes of the Indian Ocean and the islands of the Lamu Archipelago offer many beautiful places to visit. Sailing is a big part of our culture, and we recommend that our guests explore the area by land as well as by sea. Perhaps a simple day trip to one of our incredible nearby beaches may be the perfect way to relax on your holiday. Or take a sailing trip to snorkel and/or fish with lunch included; enjoy a beautiful sunset cruise with drumming and singing on board, or take the time to explore the nearby islands as we can take you on a variety of exciting sea adventures! And if you prefer to stay on land, relaxing on the rooftop and enjoying the breezes in the hammock may be the perfect way to spend your afternoon after getting "lost" in the maze of Lamu's streets. With no cars or vehicles, only donkeys for transport, spend the morning winding through our historic town, stumbling across pieces of an ancient culture meeting the modern day. Lamu Town is a place history can come alive in your imagination. Feel the ancient times that passed by.
Lamu Island is a historic trading center dating back to the 9th Century. Amu House is a traditional Swahili house dating from the 16th century, located in the heart of Old Town. Just a minute walk to the seafront, with ocean views from the rooftop, Amu House provides a perfect place to start exploring this beautiful historic area. Come join us!
  • We had the most amazing time in Lamu. Amu House is just off the main thoroughfare and the docks, making it centrally located and removed from some of the chaos. The House is absolutely beautiful, with incredible craftsmanship in the woodwork, carving and furniture. There's also a great roof deck from which you can see (seemingly) all of Lamu Town. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I'd definitely stay here again when I'm next in Lamu.

  • Beautiful little boutique B&B that is in the heart of the World Heritage site of Lamu old town (the lower floors of the building are dating back hundreds of years!). The rooms are very comfortable and full of character. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace overlooking the town and sea was a particular highlight. We were very well looked after, with our host meeting us at the airport and accompanying us back. Highly recommend this place for a stay in a culturally rich and colourful seaside town.

  • The Amu house is a pefect place to stay. For European travellers, it's not Always easy to find a good accomodation in Africa. Is comparable with a normal European accommodation. The view on the rooftop is great. You can see the whole island (which is for us a bit dirty). Amu house is an escape to that dirt. The rooms are very big. The beds have a good quality and are provided with mosquito clamboos. I missed some place to put all my cloths, but it was OK. The only thing you need to know is that there is no warm water (nowhere on the island you can find warm water). The breakfast is ok, but monotonous. Although, the morning juices are great and very fresh (mango, pineapple, orangejuices….). Kesh helps you to find out the best Captain on the Island for a Dhow boat trip. I can assure that the few guys he advices are the most reliable. You will see a lot of captains @ the coast, but they are not reliable. After a few days we enjoyed Lamu a lot. It takes some time to adjust to the pole pole culture. People on Lamu are very peacefull and very kind and sincere (even in election period). On the opposite of the Island you can discover nice paradises (Shela & Manda beach). I would definitely recommend to choose for Amu house. (a paradise in the middle of a busy center)

  • A very decent house. Very historic decor yet clean and spacious. Rooftop can see sunrise. Very relaxing to be. Breakfast is excellent. Pick up service was punctual and very welcoming. No extra charges, cost every penny

  • Amu house is a very nice place to stay. Close to the "jety" boat station. Services provided by Kesh and Samuel were nice. We really enjoyed the recommandation from Kesh all along the trip.

  • Wonderful house, with wonderful people. Will definitely come back in this traditional Swahili house!

    Sherif Folashade2017-05-17T00:00:00Z
  • Breathtaking views, the sweetest hosts (picked us up from the airport), a comfortable Swahili house, traditional taste breakfast and a wonderful stay in Lamu overall. We enjoyed every moment in Amu House, the peacefull Lamu village and the Shela beach reached by a nice walking. We are planning to come back with other friends in the next months. Thank you!

    Mario2017-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • My parents and I had a lovely stay at Amu House. It was just as described on Airbnb and much more. Kesh and Samuel, who take care of the house, made sure we were comfortable in every respect and nothing was too much to ask for! They helped with everything and arranged for us an unforgettable sunset boat trip. I highly recommend Amu House to anyone wishing to visit beautiful Lamu.

Historic Amu House in Lamu Town

Restored 300yr Old Arab Traders Mansion sited around shady courtyard in Lamu Old Town over looking the waterfront. Accommodation offered on B&B basis or whole house rental available on occassions. The property is tastefully furnished with antiques and artworks.
Beautifully restored property with all traditional features. There is a shaded courtyard garden and terrace on which to take breakfast. There are a number of roof terraces to enjoy exploit the breezes and enjoy views across town and over the activities of the waterfront.
Sited in the heart of Lamu Old Town UNESCO world heritage rated site, overlooking the waterfront. A culturally rich and interesting location. All facilities are at hand, interesting markets, shops, and eating places.
  • Moses met us at the airport and escorted us back to the house, helping us with our luggage and showing us around the house which is lovely. We particularly liked sitting up on the roof. The location was perfect for us as we wanted to be in the centre of Lamu town so we could walk out to restaurants etc easily and this was definitely the case it was a few strides from the waterfront. Moses was very helpful and was able to introduce us to a reliable dhow captain Shariff who could take us out on the water. Moses can also help with advice about Lamu, where to go, what to do etc

    Emma2016-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time in this house which exceeded all our expectations. We were met at the airstrip by the house manager, shepherded across to Lamu island on a little motorboat, led down a winding street to - a palace. A beautiful ancient house with four poster beds and waterfall showers and our own roof terrace. What more could you want?

    Marie-Elise2016-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Brian was incredibly responsive to all my questions and concerns and his house manager, Moses, was incredibly hospitable and lovely.

    Alice2015-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely house in convenient location. The top terrace is great for cooling in the breeze. Brian was very quick in responding to my messages and Moses took very good care of us.

    Barbara2016-05-15T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Brian's absolutely stunning home in Lamu has been, by far, my best AirBnB experience - made so by Brian's exceptional taste and style which exudes itself throughout the home. Moses also has been a wonderful host and cooks a delicious breakfast! We will, with absolute certainty, be returning, hopefully sooner rather than later!

    Adam2016-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely time staying in the Samaki house! It is situated in a perfect place on the Lamu island not far from all the lovely restaurants, really close to the jetty and has an interesting view! The terrace was our favorite place to hang out and enjoy the afternoon breeze. Moses, the house keeper took such good care of us. He picked us up from the airport and took us back, made us yummy breakfasts, showed us how to get boats, and even helped me set up a lovely dinner for us. He made our stay so special! The house itself is one of the most unique places we have ever been in! It has a historical feel to it. It's charm made us never want to leave the house. Wish we stayed longer! The little guide book that was prepared for the guests was really useful- we tried to go to most of the places recommended. We couldn't have chosen a better place to stay and we can't wait to come back to the Samaki house again!

    Isabella2016-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Samaki house for two nights and it was absolutely perfect. Brian was very responsive and really fast in organising our stay at a day's notice. He upgraded us to a master suite and we had the whole house to ourselves. Moses, the house manager, picked us up form the airport, catered for us and was instrumental in helping us find reliable boat transport to Shela. Samaki house is beautifully decorated and very centrally located. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

    Leonor2015-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Brian's house is exceptional. Every detail is paid attention to and the accommodations are very comfortable. The home is in a good location and Moses, the caretaker, is very helpful. Delicious fruit and coffee are served for breakfast. I would highly recommend Brian's house and would gladly stay again!

  • Beautiful and quiet place inside Lamu town. Absolutely recommend the place to anyone looking to explore Lamu town.

    Ay2017-05-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful house located about 5 mins walk from the town's main seafront drag. Through the walk, you can see the real life of Lamu. The house staff was very accomdating, their housekeeper even went out on his own to buy me sunburn cream. And the food, just as nice as the pics suggest. The cook Abu even took the effort to remove shell from the Ginger Crab to make it the easiest eating possibly. That's class!

    Jimmy2017-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, beautiful place! I would highly recommend staying here to anyone looking for a place to stay in the heart of Lamu. Not to mention being spoiled with amazing food and service by the staff- Safari, Abu and Johnson. Thanks to you all!

    Leah2017-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the most stunning houses I have stayed in, in a while. The attention to detail that has been invested makes it truely inspiring. Anyone who is interested in design will appreciate this modern but respectful interpretation of Swahili vernacular architecture. The hosts were kind and considerate, and prepared an amazing dinner from freshly caught calamari. I would go back in a heartbeat.

  • Ivor's apartment is beautifully decorated and feels like a little piece of paradise in busy Lamu. We stayed for about a week with our one year baby and enjoyed every minute of it. The stairs are a bit steep to get to the top but it's very central and the balcony with sea view is amazing for diners and breakfasts. We definitely recommend it. Ivor was always available to assist and very accommodating. Pick up / drop off from/to Lamu airport was really convenient too. One of our best Airbnb spot so far!

    Cihan2016-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • Ivor's place was well located in old town. It was comfortable and breezy, and very nicely set up with day beds and an outdoor table setting. We were greeted at the airport and made to feel very welcome and secure. I would highly recommend staying here. Thanks Ivor.

  • Just as advertised, beautiful, perfect little place perfectly suited for groups or a couple. The price was amazing and perfect value for the experience. Ivor our host was attentive, professional and happy to help with everything.

    Tristan2017-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • Right in the middle of the action: that means that in the evening you will have the noise of the street (talking people, galloping donkeys) and of a neighbouring bar, but that adds to the flavour. Apartment is on third floor, so 3 stairs up: great view and nice breeze: especially at night useful. Good value for money. The self-service restaurant at the seafront near the apartment warmly recommended!

  • I was so unlucky I could not make it to lamu + really I wished to see that beutiful place & have the chance to meet Ivor who was really understanding & friendly. He was so responsive & helpful in communication but now I know that I have a place to stay whenever I have the chance to visit lamu.

  • Ivor's apartment is perfectly located in Lamu historical town, two steps from the port and all amenities and monuments, with a wonderful sea view from the spacious balcony where we could admire the rising of the morning sun... It is fully supplied with all necessary equiments, and very fresh with a delicious breeze from east to west. The two rooms are spacious, one with a very large king bed . Ivor has arranged for us everythings with lots of attention and was very fast to communicate. We felt very confortable. Thank you Ivor, we will definitly come back. I highly recommand the place!

  • DAR EL EDEN IS A BEAUTIFUL RESTAURED HOUSE, WELL SITUATED IN A QUIET AREA OF LAMU OLD TOWN AT 5 MINUTES OF THE SEA FRONT AND SHOPPING AREA . THE PHOTOS DO NOT DO JUSTICE TO THE HOUSE AND THERE ARE SEVERAL SITTING AND RELAXING AREAS, STILISH FURNITURES AND DECORATION DETAILS GIVE THE FEELING NOT TO BE IN A RENTAL HOUSE BUT IN A LIVELY HOME OF MORE THAN 200 YEARS BUT WITH ALL THE NECESSARY COMFORT. FABIENNE, THE OWNER, RECEIVED US WITH AN DISCRETE AND DELICATE ATTENTION AND LET US TASTE SOME HOME MADE ssCOCKTAILS . WE PARTICULARY APRECIATED THE POOL AREA AND THE TOP ROOF TERRACE WITH PERMANENT BREEZE. MBOGO , THE HOUSE KEEPER WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL , PARTICULARY ORGANISING THE DIFFERENT BEACH BOATS AND SAILING TOUR RESERVATIONS. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

  • I've been to the coast now some 10 or 15 odd times, and I can say without a doubt that this was the best accommodation I've stayed in yet, especially when price is taken into account. It has the feel of a well lived in house; full of character and charm, but in a sensible, well designed manner. Sitting on the roof with a cold drink, listening to call to prayer, and watching the dows sail into port at the end of the day is one of the best settings I can imagine myself being in. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic, homely experience in Lamu, and plan strongly on returning.

The White House is an authentic Swahili home that will transport you back in time to Lamu's rich and multicultural past. Staying in this carefully restored centuries-old mansion in the heart of the old town is a truly unforgettable experience.
An oasis in Lamu. You will be delighted by the beautiful gardens, refreshing pool, and gorgeous swahili architecture of this home. Saidi who looks after the house is a fantastic chef who will look after you and (on request) cook you some delicious homemade Swahili meals. Many famous authors and artists have found inspiration while staying in this home over the years.
  • Claire's apartment was exactly as described and shown in the pictures - a perfect haven. The pool really was lovely to cool down in after a long hot day. We were made very welcome. Thanks to Saidi who looked after us very well.

    Kim2016-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Claire's home is an incredibly authentic glimpse into Swahili life. If you are interested in history, architecture and culture, this is by far the most interesting and beautiful place you'll stay. The indoor-outdoor home is centered around a massive courtyard with stairs and hallways to all sorts of different rooms. We had such a wonderful time staying at her beautiful home and I agree with previous reviewers that the photos really don't do it justice - the place is really so cool. Saidi is also a fantastic host and excellent cook. And we loved the location right in the middle of the town. Keep in mind though: there's no wifi so we accessed internet whenever we went to some of the hotels and/or restaurants.

    Simone2017-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • A great experience from the beginning till the end! Before arriving Claire gave us many advices about the house and Lamu (what to do, useful and key contacts...), so the stay at such a magical island was great. The house is amazing, a tipical construction, very clean and comfortable. Saidi's breakfasts are delicious!!! Worth experiencing!!!!

    Raquel 2015-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home with amazing details everywhere! The staff are great and incredibly helpful! Highly recommend it!

    Peng2017-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutly loved the place. It's a house for people, who like to please their heart no matter in which corner you look. It's a microcosmos of beauty; it transports a fantastic idea of the shawili architecture, incl most of its important details. Like the water storage with tiny fish, who eat mosquitos. If you stayed in Whitehouse there is no need to visit the local museum for swahili living. The modern addition of the pool of course is great! and its much bigger than it seems on the picture. u can actually have good swim in it. We personally loved to stay in Lamu, it was an authentic experiance. But consider that its less the touristic spot than Shela or Manda. There are a few tourist restaurant and souvenir shops but mainly its a little town doing what needs to be done, in no regard to tourists. We spent a lot of evenings in Shela or Manda and took the boat back. The little narrow alleys are at first a bit spooky to walk home at night (5 min from the shore) but u get used to it soon and will feel safe too. Something i really recommend is to take with you all the regular things you might think you can buy in a supermarket. You can almost know for sure you wont find it on the island. We for example searched left and right for a good shampoo or deodorant. ;)

  • The house is truly magical. It feels like you've stepped back in time when you enter. The decor is simple and very traditional to Lamu. The location doesn't offer views of the ocean, like many houses in near-by Shela Beach but it offers a truly authentic Lamu experience. Saidi is a lovely cook - we recommend his coconut Swahili fish and lobster curry. The pool is really a game changer - it was so hot that we took a few midnight dips just to cool down. We would absolutely stay here again.

  • Beautiful home in Lamu. The inside is absolutely pristine and Saidi and Stephen (the hosts and cooks) make wonderful food and are very helpful. Claire was very quick at answering my many questions and suggested very good boat captains to help us out on our trips. This house is an absolute gem.

  • This place is a gem! The pictures do not describe it, it is way more beautiful in reality! The place is hidden in the old town of Lamu, everything walkable and yet worlds apart with its tranquil little garden, the pool and the many hidden spots to spend the day in the large buildings. It is nicely decorated with great style and the aesthetics are a real inspiration. The house is designed with many open spaces to allow an airy breeze making the heat of the day more comfortable. The way the house has been renovated with all the nice details is an attraction of Lamu by itself. We have been taken care of in the most friendly manner and received a wonderful breakfast every morning. We had a fantastic time there it is definitely high on the list to come back. Lamu is like a journey back in time, and could not be a better place to stay than Claire´s house. We appreciate that we could stay there!

  • Nyuma Gereza is a beautiful, traditional Swahili house right in the heart of Lamu (very close to the fort, the market and the waterfront). Our room was impeccably clean, spacious and attractive. Our hosts were gracious, friendly and welcoming; Eddy even came out to the airport (a ferry ride) to meet us. Nyuma Gereza is not a 5-star hotel: it is better than that - it is an authentic part of Lamu town, and that's what you're going there for isn't it?

  • It was real pleasure to stay at Mr Shamutey's place. It's extremely well located, spotless clean, comfortable and our host was full of good advice on what to visit, where to go, where to find good food. Enjoyed a lot the beautiful room and pleasant bathroom, we could have a lot of privacy and yet enjoy the last floor balcony. I would definitely stay again.

    Julien2015-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great, convenient place to stay with a great host that sent Eddy to pick me up.

  • This is a convenient place to stay if you're looking to experience the old town. You can also take a leisurely walk to the beach about 20 minutes or so instead of the speed boats. You could opt for the donkey ride too! I did once, it was epic ;) Frank and Abdalla were very helpful in planning the trip. They're among some of the most responsive people I've met!

  • The house is situated just in the middle of the town. In front of the loca market and just 100 m from the main square and Lamu Castle. Nice House and really calm and relation quality-price is excellent. They picked us at the airport, as it can be tricky to find the house the first time, and helped us with local arrangements.

  • I had the chance to stay in this lovely old Swahili house right in the center of Lamu whilst visiting the island. The room was clean and spacious, and the house had a lot of charm with its private patio. I really loved the fact that it was right in the center of Lamu town, and so easily accessible, which meant I could easily go visit anything in town or go out for dinner and come back in less than five minutes. As well staying in the center of Lamu town is the only way to truly get the feeling of this old swahili town. The breakfast prepared by Eddy was delicious, and the host Frank and Abdullah couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, advising me with anything I needed from good restaurants to reliable captains for Dhow trips. I highly recommend staying here as it is a very nice and affordable place.

  • We were met by a very nice man who took us on a tour of Lamu and showed us all of the spots. He was very knowledgeable and kind (Make sure that you negotiate the price of your tour before hand). We enjoyed 4 nights with the entire place to ourself. It was wonderful. We were joined by a local cat who we adopted immediately and enjoyed. The food was delicious, and the staff was very helpful. The tour guide set us up on several boat rides and it was an all around incredible experience.

  • We had a lovely time at Jannat. Caroline, (our host) and the other staff were very attentive and accommodating, doing everything they could to make our stay pleasant and enjoyable. The house itself is beautiful, with lots of outdoor spaces to relax, and take in the peaceful feel of Old Town, and the rooms were clean, and well kept. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer- we're currently in the throes of a prolonged case of post-lamu blues! We will surely be back (:

  • This wonderful house was even better than I expected. Huge, beautiful, elegant. The staff was kind, respectful but full of attentions. In a central location to enjoy the real life of Lamu, but well protected yo enjoy your privacy. The garden and the patios were amazing, so were the bedrooms and all the service. A perfect stay

  • Ttunu house is in excellent condition and was very comfortable. We had a great experience there and were well taken care of by the housekeepers. I would highly recommend anyone travelling to lamu who wants to stay in town to skip the hotels and stay at the beautiful Ttunu house.

  • Alex's house is a gem. It is really nicely restored, spacious and cosy, tucked away in the old town of Lamu. Despite the hot and humid weather in Lamu the house was cool thanks to the breeze flowing through the rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and Thomas cooked an amazing dinner for us. Staying here was definitely a unique experience. Communication with Alex was easy and quick. Recommended!

  • Ttunu house is a great location; right in old town, and therefore a great place from which to explore the old sector of Lamu. The house and staff are great, and Thomas the cook makes the most divine fruit pancakes we have ever tasted. Communication with Alex was smooth and he was extremely helpful arranging for pick up from the airport and suggesting a trusted guide to show us around Lamu. We would definitely recommend Ttunu House, and hope to return!

    Christine2017-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for an excellent stay in a house that feels like a palace. The house literally is a gem. We had a great stay and felt sad to leave. Thomas and Hassan took excellent care of us. Especially the dinner prepared by Thomas was really good. We went to the market together to buy all the ingredients and he turned it into a lovely local dish. Please go and try it, we only gave it a go at the final night of our stay and regret that we didn't do it earlier. The only comment is that one of the showers wasn't working properly which was a bit annoying. Everything else was good though and we would absolutely come back!

    Carine2017-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • I booked the stay at Ttunu House for my mom and her friends this past weekend and they loved it, they couldn't stop talking about it. Alex is an amazing host, he sent Hassan to fetch us from the airport and he was a gem, Thomas was very patient with the very opinionated women... Everything was amazing. The property is so beautiful it's hard to capture on photos. Thank you so much Alex.

  • An amazing, open-air Swahili mansion that seems to have leapt from the pages of an architecture magazine. Located in the thicket of alleyways of old Lamu town; an easy walk to the water (if you don't get lost). Alexander and his on-the-ground helpers were supremely helpful getting us in, out, and comfortable in between. My companions and I were unanimous: the best Airbnb we have ever stayed in.

Escape to enchanting Lamu Island, step back in time and into our Maridhiya House... Situated in a quiet and unspoilt area of Lamu's old Stone Town and just a short walk from the seafront, town square and fort, Maridhiya has been renovated with care and skill to create a beautiful and comfortable home. The house comes complete with the services of our friendly and helpful staff who will be pleased to collect you from the airport and to shop, cook meals and guide you around the town and island.
A classic Lamu town house dating back to the 18th Century, Maridhiya has been renovated and modernised with skill and attention-to-detail and retains its many historic decorative features and authentic Swahili atmosphere. It sits in a particularly peaceful and unspoilt area of Lamu’s historic Stone Town. The house is entered from a traditional 'Daka' entrance porch with ornate carved teak wood front door. The impressive Ground Floor Reception Galleries and Kitchen have 13 ft (4 metre) high ceilings and a wealth of meticulously-restored decorative plaster work and ornate 'Zidaka' wall niches. The large and airy First Floor Living and Dining Room also features high ceilings, traditional Islamic 'Masharabya' window screens, a 6-seater dining table and expansive built-in baraza sofa seats. Also on the First Floor is a Double Bedroom with four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan, wardrobes & cupboard space. The Second Floor Master Bedroom is approached from a breezy roof terrace, part open and part makuti-thatched and with comfortable and shady baraza seats and tables. From here, and from the Third Floor open-air terrace above, there are attractive and uninterrupted views across neighbouring gardens and rooftops to the Lamu Channel and Manda Island. The spacious Master Bedroom runs the entire width of the house and features a Queen-size four poster bed, ceiling fan, ample wardrobe & storage space and an en-suite bathroom. On the Ground Floor there is an additional large Single Bedroom with antique four-poster bed and adjoining bathroom. The house is nicely furnished with traditional and antique Swahili furniture and fully equipped with everything you need for your stay. The large Ground Floor kitchen has a fridge/freezer and there is an additional fridge on the First Floor to keep drinks cool. The bedrooms are all fitted with fans and mosquito nets - and bath towels and beach towels are also supplied, as are bath soaps and lavatory paper. House staff Kahindi and Dixon welcome guests to the house with a refreshing cold fruit juice, and the kitchen is stocked with basic provisions including tea, coffee, drinking water, milk and sugar. The staff will be pleased to help shop for other groceries and provisions, and will cook and serve meals as required. We’re happy to recommend Maridhiya as perhaps the nicest medium-sized house to rent in Lamu Town – it is ideal for one or two couples or a small family or group and is always very popular. What our guests say - “My stay at Maridhiya House was excellent. The third floor bedroom had the nicest breeze and view and I was treated to great food prepared by Kahindi. It was very relaxing and enjoyable and I am sure I will be returning for a longer vacation next time. Thanks to all the staff who made my visit so welcoming.” Melinda, USA “Asante sana Andrew, Kahindi and Dickson for a lovely stay at beautiful Maridhiya House in Lamu Town. It was great experience for the family to stay in the heart of Stone Town. Back now in Nairobi it seems like a whole world away…” Sally, Nairobi “I just spent the last 4 days at this beautiful house and Lamu and highly recommend it. A beautiful house with excellent, attentive staff. Lamu is a special gem to visit – friendly people, very cultural and I felt totally safe. I would definitely go back to visit.” Michael, USA "I'm finally back in the real world after a wonderful time at your house. We did two dhow trips - Manda and Takwa, and did the Museum, Fort, Lamu House, etc. Kahindi's fish curry is the best I have ever had (even better than a fish curry in India!). The house is truly amazing." Roy, Pretoria "We couldn't have asked for a better way to end our honeymoon! We had a fantastic and magical weekend at beautiful Maridhiya House. We couldn't stop eating the delicious food cooked by Kahindi who looked after us so well - a trip to recommend!" Kate and Aidan, London "So sad to leave Maridhiya House - an absolutely stunning place and the perfect peaceful retreat. I recommend it very highly to anyone visiting Lamu. Thanks so much!" Laura, Scotland
Maridhiya sits in a quiet, elevated position within Lamu’s UNESCO World Heritage Area. The house is situated close to Lamu’s historic ‘Kinoni’ whetstone where swords and other weapons were sharpened in past centuries – and which gives its name to the surrounding neighbourhood. Also nearby is the charming small ‘Tambuni’ Mosque – named after the many small betel nut plantations which still exist in the area. The narrow streets and alleyways are quiet and shady and one of the greatest pleasures of a stay in Lamu is wandering around and exploring the byways of this historic town, and meeting its friendly and welcoming inhabitants. Lamu Fort and Museum and the other historic and cultural attractions of the town are just a few minutes from the house - as are the seafront, the main shopping street and numerous places to eat and drink. The nearby Lamu House Hotel has an excellent restaurant and bar - and atmospheric Cafe Bustani is a great place for coffee and snacks in a shady garden. There is good shopping for colourful kickoys, kangas and other local fabrics, together with antiques, traditional Lamu furniture and other gifts and curios all along the main shopping street and seafront.
  • Lovely town house in Lamu town. Feels very Moroccan. Clean and well finished.

  • Maridhiya house is a very good deal as it one of the beautifully rebuilt Swahili houses with all the classic decor and great finish but for an affordable price. Communication with Andrew and the others was perfect and we really enjoyed our stay. Be prepared that it can get quite hot at night ;-) However, the terrace is just great with the breeze, coming from the seaside.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Maridhiya House in Lamu. We felt very much part of the Lamu community as the house is located within the old town. The house has been beautifully restored. And the people of Lamu! They are kind and friendly and welcoming. Kahindi and Dixon are amazing chefs and fantastic hosts! Thank you Andrew for answering all of my many questions! We would definitely visit again. Barbara (from Canada)

    Barbara2016-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Maridhiya House was wonderful. Kahindi, the housekeeper, welcomed us at the airport. He is so nice and made delicious food for us (do try the sphaghetti and avocado and banana mixed milkshake, s(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) g(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)d). The place was safe and the beds were very clean. There were so many stars at night, and we enjoyed viewing them on the top balcony under the cool evening breeze. There is no AC in the house but there are ceiling fans in each bedroom, and a stand fan for the dining room. Finding this place can be confusing, as it's not along the oceanfront. But Kahindi was so kind to offer to come pick us up and guide us back to the house. We highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to immerse into the culture of Lamu and don't mind getting lost among the winding streets.

  • We had a wonderful stay on Lamu. The house was beautiful, exactly as advertised and just what we wanted. Kahindi and Dixon were wonderfully helpful and always smiling - the food was fabulous too! Would definitely recommend the house and Andrew was a great host - happy to help with an info and answer questions asap. I hope we will be back to Lamu soon and would love to stay again. Many thanks!

The best place is the 3rd floor terrace with a lovely breeze and and ocean view. Matata's sailing boat trip is a must.

  • The place is in a great location and is beautifully decorated. The view from the rooftop and balcony is stunning. Last, but not least, Safari, Johnson, and Abu make you feel right at home and help you with anything you need. They are always ready to offer great tips on what to do, too. Make sure you ask for some delicious ginger tea with milk along with some bhajia in the morning!

  • This is hands down the one of the best if not the best house on Lamu island. Absolute value for money, well maintained, quiet, no mosquitoes, clean, the service... oh! The service from Safari, Abu and Johnson was absolutely stellar. To us this was a home away from home while on holiday. Abu is a magnificent chef. That he is! Don't be turned off by the fact that you have to pay extra for him to make you food. He makes the best food in Lamu. We can attest to that bearing in mind we went almost to all restaurants in Lamu. Have Abu make you all your meals. You won't regret it! Soups: - Mango soup. (Yep, mango soup. To say that Abu's mango soup is delicious is an understatement). - Pumpkin and carrot soup or as Abu refers to it "The sunset". - Zucchini soup. Main courses: - Lemon crab. - Lobster - Fish cooked in banana leaf. - Pilau (Vegetable pilau or beef or meat of your choice) - Shrimp - Coconut Rice - vegetable curry - Chapatis - Mashed potato Abu can make desert too. He made us very good chocolate cake. Breakfast is served with fruit salad, lots of coffee, various refills of water, fresh juice or fresh coconut, Swahili snacks and toast with eggs . Don't be put off by the fact that old town is abit far from the beaches in Shella or Manda but really it's 100 kenya shillings on a public boat to Shella beach and when the tide is low you can even walk there (a 40 minute walk never hurt nobody while on holiday). Private boats go for 400 shillings one way and that's for a single person or a group. Old town is the heart and soul of Lamu and if you want to have a true experience of the Swahili culture, then Andavelo House should be on top of your list of places to stay at in Lamu.

    Vanessa2017-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay and Andalelo house was incredible. Safari was great and met us at the airport and guided us back through the narrow streets of Lamu to the house. The house is lovely and we had the whole place to ourselves. Even if other people were staying in other suites it would have been fine as each suite is very spacious with lots of space to relax including a private terrace with sea views. The pool was a great place to cool off after exploring the towns and beaches of Lamu and Shela. The staff were very attentive to our needs but never in the way. We definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay in Lamu. It was great for a getaway for two but would also stay with the whole family in the future as some suites have adjoining rooms to accommodate that as well. We will be back for sure.

  • This place is so much better than the pictures. We stayed for 4 nights and had the place to ourselves. What luxury! Abu makes excellent food. Just go to the market, buy fish, vegetables or whatever you fancy, and he will make you a delicious meal. Everything else was fantastic, the house is beautiful and all the guys working there are absolutely great. Make sure you have a bottle of wine on the roof after sunset. Lamu is a very nice and friendly town, so nice to just walk around. Try the ginger crab at Lamu house. We really recommend this place, really good value for money and an overall fantastic experience..

A small, modest, simple but tidy, pleasant & comfortable house. A typical Swahili house: one large room, double row of beam, 4 alcoves and the master bedroom, inside. Suitable for 5to7 guests Ngema, in attendance, keeps & cleans the house. He can cook & launder (private arrangement). Zeitun (dhow) ready for fishing trips.
You can find huge, magnificent, luxuriously renovated houses in Lamu or Shela. SHUWARI is simple and modest. Only one ground floor and roof terrace, but cosy. A small but lush garden. No breathtaking view, but the breeze cools the roof top terrace and makes it a nice place to rest or chill. You could hope being near the beach. But after dawn, you can easily walk to the sea front, walk along the busy streets, mingle with the very friendly Lamu people. Enjoy sophisticated of (delicious) local Swahili food. SHUWARI allows you to enjoy the whole of Lamu life.
As a house in town, Shuwari is ideally situated. Right in the middle of Mkomani, the old Stone Town where most houses made in coral stones date back to XVIIIthe Century, The area is much more quiet than the busy and popular Langoni area, or the sea front. It is a mixture of posh renovated mansions, houses of local people, guest houses, gardens.. You find shops nearby, From a distance, the muezzin of a dozen of mosks mingle their calls to prayer, but none next door. But within minutes, you are shopping in the main street or bargaining your dhow trip with the beach boys in front of Hapa Hapa.
  • Shuwari House: There are a wide variety of places to rent in Lamu Kenya from A-Z in price. Shuwari house offers you a place that is closer to A in the more budget side of offers but I must say that it offers superb traveler savvy chic. Unpretentious but at the same time savvy chic. Shuwari gives you Lamu traditional architectural style with all of the essentials western requirements. I'm a cook so enjoyed the basic outdoor kitchen, however beware, the entrance to this kitchen was designed for short people :-). Joe is building a new semi-detacted accommodation that can either be combined with the older section, or as I understand can also be complete separate. The interior garden is a quiet calming green retreat, which is superb for an afternoon moment of cool meditation. Alternatively the rooftop shaded terrace with lounges, table and chairs is a great place for sharing all with friends-drinks/conversation/food et al. Kudus to Joe.

SHUWARI House, in the core of Lamu

Centrally situated in an elevated position in Old Lamu, Nyota house is comprised of clean lines and well thought-out spaces. Spread over 4 floors, Nyota House is comprised of a freshwater plunge pool, three double bedrooms, and an expansive rooftop.
Nyota is a house of clean lines and well thought-out spaces – a cool, calm and uncluttered take on a traditional Lamu house – which cleverly incorporates traditional Swahili and Islamic decorative elements such as zidaka niches, carved plasterwork designs, ceiling friezes and mashrabya screens. A defining feature of Nyota is the spacious freshwater plunge pool built down into the foundations of the house – with its inset nyota star design, underwater baraza seats, underwater lighting and waterproof uplighters highlighting the surrounding archways, it is a wonderfully atmospheric place in which to cool off and relax. The cloistered and very private ground floor of the house, entered through a traditional daka entrance porch with baraza seats and carved teakwood front door, also houses an occasional single bedroom and shower room, the downstairs kitchen - and an expansive built-in sofa seat which is ideal for lounging in front of the pool. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms – each with twin beds and bedside tables and lamps housed under all-enveloping mosquito nets. Each has a spacious ensuite shower room, and ample wardrobe and storage space. The master bedroom suite – comprising double bedroom with four-poster bed, dressing room with built-in wardrobes, ensuite bathroom and living room with sofas and tables - is housed on the second floor. All the rooms interconnect – making it a lovely private territory for the master and mistress of the house. The living room can also be accessed from the main stairway and second floor landing – and so can also be used as an indoor family room. Nyota is completely detached - with streets and open spaces on all four sides – making it unusually airy and well-ventilated - and the upper floors are further refreshed by the cooling effect of the swimming pool and louvred bedroom window shutters all around the 3-storey central atrium. Should you need any further ventilation there are ceiling fans in all bedrooms. The breezy and part makuti-thatched rooftop houses a semi-enclosed dining room to its rear - its table seating up to eight guests – and kitchen area with cocktail fridge and sink. The central area of the rooftop features spacious baraza sofa seats and tables under the makuti roof, while the front deck is open to the sun and to the beautiful Lamu night sky. A combination of table lamps, hanging lanterns, uplighters and zidaka niche lights ensure that the rooftop is a charming and beautifully and subtly lit space for an evening’s relaxing, dining and entertaining. Views from the rooftop are wonderful and unimpeded – one of the great pleasures of a stay at Nyota is observing all the comings and goings of neighbouring rooftops, streets and alleyways, the local birdlife and catlife, the passing parade of dhows and motorboats on the channel - and the arrival and departure of planes at the airport across on Manda island. Centrally situated in an elevated position in Old Lamu - and just a minute or two from the waterfront, the town’s museums, main boat jetty and main shopping street – the many attractions of the town and island are all close at hand. One can enjoy the hustle and bustle of local street life, boat and beach trips and cultural visits - and then withdraw to the privacy, seclusion and relaxation offered by Nyota. During your stay you will be ably looked after by Harrison, Nyota's house manager, a chef is available on request for additional cost. Also very close at hand are Lamu House Hotel which is a fixture of the Lamu Town seafront.
  • We really enjoyed our stay in Lamu. Jack's house is very beautiful and provides a good feel of the Swahili architecture and culture. Jack was very accommodating and sent us very useful information, such as recommendations for trips and phone numbers of boat captains. Jack's house is located in the old town and close to the jetty. While the house provides the opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the Swahili culture and the absorb the life in the old town, it is also a haven of tranquility with a beautiful small pool and a roof terras.

  • What a great place this is! Stayed at Jack's house on Lamu for 6 days but I could have easily stayed longer. The house is a heaven of tranquility. We especially enjoyed the amazing rooftop which has a great view and a very comfortable lounge area. There is also a constant breeze so it would never feel hot on the rooftop, which made it our favourite place. The house manager was also very friendly and resourceful which was a great asset for our holiday. Communication with Jack went smoothly and during our stay Jack stayed in contact to assure everything went fine. I would definitely recommend the Nyota house and I'm hoping to come by again soon. Thanks Jack!

  • We had a great time in Lamu. Jack's place is a good spot of you want to be part of old town life.

  • Just as it looks, airy, cool, a fabulous roof terrace and refreshing and spacious splash pool. We have enjoyed a very relaxing few days in Nyota House with our two teenage children. Never too hot thanks to the rooftop and design of the house. Recommend Harrison's scrambled eggs. As the owner says, probably not so suitable for small children but brilliant for older kids and adults alike.

  • Great place to stay, walking distance to good eat out places, the jetty and a very friendly staff to ease you Into island life. The pool is a great place to cool off and the terrace provides a relaxing area to just laze about and enjoy the view. Definitely recommended.

The 4 storied Bembea house reflects the fascinating charm of Swahili architecture mixed with electric furnishing and a personal touch of finest style and comfort. It's situated on the edge of the picturesque village Shela, alongside the dunes that fringe the long stretch of Shela Beach. Located only a few steps from the famous Peponi Hotel
Bembea house is a self-catering house. It's a home away from home. The house sleeps 2 to 4 people in two double bedrooms. On the second floor there are 2 bedrooms they are furnished with four-poster beds, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and dressing tables. The en-suite bathrooms have hot water showers. The entrance hall decorated with seashells in the beautiful niches and three large stone benches ideal for sitting and relaxing. The staircase leads up to the fully equipped kitchen. The kitchen has a dining area where your friends and family can sit and dine. Through the kitchen windows you can gaze at the birds in the palm trees and enjoy the view of the sand dunes. The third floor has a spacious dining area and an adjacent living room. Lastly, we have a magnificent rooftop with panoramic view of the Indian Ocean and Shela village. While relaxing in the baraza lounging area or sunbathing on the comfortable sun beds, you can feel the cool breeze from the dunes.
  • It's difficult to write a review that's believable to people researching, to convey just how good this place is. Having stayed at a large number of Air Bnb homes around the world, I am clear that this is a truly outstanding one. It's in a very good location, central yet secluded, the pickup etc from the airport was seamless, and the house staff and chef skills made us lucky enough to have the best restaurant in the area at home. The ATM around the corner didn't work at all so have the cash you need, even the Lamu town ATMs are a lottery if they will work! Do check the tides for when you visit, if you want to see the ruins you will need a high tide at a useable hour during the day. The beach walk to the south is stunning, even had the pleasure yesterday of rescuing and re-floating a stranded baby dolphin. The water is discoloured this time of year with the South Easterly wind and weather patterns from June to September, then it clears up again when it turns North Easterly. There are still many nice places to swim, it's just not the clear blue postcard water for a few months of the year. Boats are easy to hire and inexpensive, and Sampson at the house is able to organise pretty much anything you might want. There is a good library in the house if you are staying for a while, and the top floor is really quite stunning for relaxing and reading etc. The house wifi was excellent, and there are a large number of international power plug adapters on each floor. (5 floors) There is also excellent mobile coverage through the house and area, although this was only with Safaricom for me. There is a bit of noise occasionally from donkeys doing their thing in the night, so add a pair of earplugs if you think this might bother you. It's comparable to a mini Zanzibar Stone town, but a quieter experience. I loved it and will be coming back. Every part of this stay was a pleasant experience, and I thoroughly recommend it.

  • We had an amazing stay at bembea house. Situated over 4 floors with a rooftop to sit and enjoy the breeze. The house is furnished to a very high standard with lovely antiques and amazing decor. Towels were provided and our host had thought of lots of extras. Fully equipped kitchen and Samson was on hand to meet and greet us and make sure we had everything we needed. The food was delicious - we had wonderful local snapper and crab during our stay. The house is a short walk from the beach and peponis hotel. There are lots of local boats that can take you into lamu town or the airport. Highly recommend this amazing house!

  • Bembea house is a dream. Located close to Peponi and the beach. We loved the feel of the house, the details of the decor and especially the service. Samson and Johnson were so hospitable and their food was delicious. The rooftop was ideal for relaxation and hanging out. We plan on booking Bembea House for our next Lamu stay.

  • Beautiful house, very helpful host, and great staff!

  • We had an excellent stay. The house was very clean and tidy. The staff were excellent and looked after us very well. They went out of their way to make our stay. They arranged our boats to and from the airport and helped us with our luggage and also prepared outstanding food. We also really enjoyed speaking to them and learning about Kenya from them. The house is perhaps a little grander than the photos suggest. It is vast considering it is only two bedrooms. The house is only a short walk from the beach so you can easily go for a swim or walk before breakfast.

The lodge is architect and interior decorator designed to be comparatively cool. It offers tree foliage for privacy and beautiful vistas, not least at sunset. Enjoy comfort for two to six, midway between Lamu Town and Shela Village - Indian Ocean is 400m near by foot path for quick boat trip to Town, Shela and beach.
Shamba Viking – unique setting with tranquillity and space! Among gently rolling sand dunes of acacias and tropical fruit and nut trees, our Shamba offers 2.5 ha of rare tranquillity. It gives you personal space in the fantastic Lamu Island setting - a place with sun and shade, and a cooling Ocean breeze. The night is starlit with soothing sounds from the foliage of palm trees - and, when the wind is from a southerly direction - and Ocean waves on Shela Beach. The lodge is purpose-designed to be climate adapted and eco-friendly. We invite you to enjoy the uniqueness of our Shamba Lodge - a different stage for a different experience. Halfway between Lamu Town and Shela Village, on Lamu Island in the Indian Ocean, Shamba La Familia Ya Viking – or just Shamba Viking - is found. ‘Shamba' means ‘farmstead' or ‘small plantation' in Swahili, and our Shamba is part of a sandy landscape of tropical fruit and nut trees in an old Lamu plantation landscape with gently rolling sand dunes, culminating at greater height along Shela Beach in the south. We have trees of coconut, mango, tamarind and cashew to enjoy the fresh fruits of, season permitting. In this rare setting, Shamba Viking is a unique experience with space to take it all in. During the day of most of the year, there is your choice of sun or shade. Lamu is hot and humid, yet on the raised eastern part of the Shamba where our Lodge is located, a cooling breeze is almost always present. Shamba Viking is reached by foot or donkey on pathways: 10 minutes from the Ocean; 20 minutes from Lamu Town; 30 minutes from Shela Village; and, 30-40 minutes from Shela Beach. By foot and boat, time to and from Town and Shela is around 15 -20 minutes. Njumba (house) Viking is climate adapted, energy saving and eco-friendly. Perched on a 'hillock' at Shamba Viking's eastern end the Lodge offers views over the Shamba and surrounding landscape - the elongated shape of the house allows cross-ventilates for comfort. The Lodge is also located, orientated and constructed to minimise solar gain - irrespectively of whether the Monsoon is from the south-west or north-east. Purpose-designed to optimise between privacy and transparency – the lattice walls of the Lodge let the Ocean breeze reach all its parts. The voluminous, ventilated, roof space and elevated floors on columns above the ground assist in cooling. The only heat adsorbing walls, floors and ceilings are in the bathrooms. They allow for privacy, yet they enable air circulation and cooling through specially designed air-cooling wall openings and ceiling funnels. In the coastal climate context, the house is likely to contribute to the discussion on energy saving climate control. In harmony with nature, the Lodge is constructed from low energy building materials, has part solar powered lighting and water warming. We only use waterless, non-polluting but nutrients recycling, 'separation' toilets of the Separett make. Uniquely designed and built, Shamba Viking Lodge has three parts: in the east, 2 double/twin bedrooms with shared bathroom and lobby in between – the easternmost bedroom has a roofed wooden deck towards the east and its gentle morning sunrise; in the west, 1 double/twin bedroom with shower room/toilet and lobby - the bedroom has a large, roofed, wooden deck towards the west with its spectacular evening sunset; in the middle of the house, roofed wooden deck with open long sides for living and dining. The bedrooms have single beds that may be placed singly or together with large joint mosquito net. There is a ceiling fan in each bedroom. The kitchen – with openable panels for contact with the dining/living space - has ample worktop and shelving surfaces, electric hob and oven, double basin sink with warm and cold water, and two fridges with freezer compartments. Each shower/toilet room has warm and cool water. The washbasin is set in ample shelving. The shower/toilet room is reached through a ventilated lobby. The breezy lounge has open walls towards the two long sides to let you take in the greenery and undulating landscape. Elevated off the ground, the lounge is great for up to 8-10 people to dine and relax. A pavilion next to the main house provides for breezy conference space for ten - around purpose-designed round table with chairs. Electricity is at curtesy of Kenya Power. Internet access may be provided on the Shamba through a local telephone operator modem attached to your laptop at nominal cost, or though an Internet café in Lamu town. Renting one, two or three rooms in the main house, you will have access to the dining/sitting room and kitchen - also free mango, tamarind and juice of coconut, season permitting. If you rent a room towards the sunset, you will have your own spacious deck, shower/toilet room with lobby. If you rent a room towards the sunrise, you will have your own deck and own entry access. Our Caretaker - whereas to advise and assist - will seek to interact with our guests on their own terms. The tranquility and space of the lightly undulating sand dune landscape is a treat. Its location is a 15-20 min walk or a 7-10 min walk to nearest jetty for a 5-10 min boat trip to Lamu town - a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site - and Shela Village, near fantastic swimming and bathing at untouched, kilometres long, Shela Beach. At night the sky is star lit through the foliage of the palm trees - this scene is even more sublime when the moon is out! Our contacts will provide you with boat transport. You may choose between different boat types - a faster one for the Manda Island airstrip, Lamu town or Shela Village, or, a wide hulled and comfortable Mozambique Dhow for swimming, bathing, snorkeling, fishing and/or Lamu style sun downer. Lamu Museum, Traditional House and Fort in Lamu Town, as well as Thakwa ruins on Manda Island, are interesting places to see. Also Lamu town and Shela Village! You may enjoy sailing around Lamu Island with lunch prepared by boat crew, after swiming and bathing! You may sail to Manda Toto (Small Manda) for children's bathing, swimming and snorkeling - lunch cooked for you if you pre-order! Our Caretaker will only be too happy to advise you on a variety of shops, cafés and restaurants, and he will also be happy to organise a donkey for you to ride! You will be met at Manda airstrip by our Caretaker who will take you at a nominal cost by boat to the nearest jetty on Lamu Island to Shamba Viking. It is fun to stroll in the cosy lanes in Lamu Town or Shela Village. People are friendly and helpful. They will also appreciate your respecting their simple to follow dress code.

  • The lodge is amazing. We really enjoyed the relaxed ambiance of the place. Nils was really helpful both prior to our arrival and while we stayed at the lodge. The staff was attentive to our needs in every way and we must say they are some of the best bunch of guys we've met.

  • We had an excellent stay at Shamba Viking! This is an absolutely gorgeous home perfectly located half way between Lamu and Shela towns (within walking distance of both). We really enjoyed interacting with the staff who live on the property. They were incredibly kind, welcoming and helpful, whether it was giving directions or making sure we never ran out of fresh mangoes or coconut juice. The house itself is a breezy oasis of calm. The perfect place to get away from it all and relax. Nils was very helpful in the lead-up to our trip and provided us with excellent contacts for organizing all kinds of activities.

  • Nils was very helpful in planning our trip to Lamu. Hamisi welcomed us at the airport and organized the transfer to the eco lodge. The house is beautiful, fully equiped and located 20 min from town, 30-40 min from the beach. We would have had a great stay had not the mice/rats graced us with their night presence. Every night, we could hear them running in the rooms, climbing the roof from the inside and playing noisily. It became a nightmare to sleep at the lodge as we were the unpriviledged attendees of the big mice show. Sleeping on the beach during the quiet day was way easier. Apart from offering to change from one bedroom to the other, the caretaker was not really helpful in solving the matter. We understand the house is quite isolated and close to trees, but we would have wished to be informed before booking that mice were regularly meeting the hosts.

  • House is very beautiful, there is a yard beach, the kitchen is great, is the most satisfactory terrace and sofa, the wind blowing sit on it very comfortable.

  • Shamba Viking is like an oasis in the desert, a beautiful, spacious, home with modern comforts (I especially liked the washing machine) and the lounging area makes it so easy to get into the holiday spirit . Its located a good distance from the noise of the town, but within an easy walk, so you can soak up the history of the island/immerse yourself in its current goings. Or...walk the other direction for the amazing beach no review can prepare you for, you'll have to see/experience it for yourself. Nils was very good with ensuring that my arrival/checkin was seamless and sent a list of key contacts that I couldn't use thanks to phone problems. But his name proved invaluable as "Dr Nils, with the beard, nice guy" helped to get me an escort who took me to his doorstep. I had a great stay, felt home away from home with Hamisi (the care taker) making sure that I was comfortable/ was choosing to lazy about vs because I didn't know what else I could do. I recommend the Shambala wholeheartedly. I'll return for another holiday in lamu armed with family and friends to share the cheer.

  • The place itself is great - cool and breezy due to its thatched roof and reed wall format. We were the only guests, which was a great and very peaceful experience. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and we were brought fresh coconuts and mangos daily. Overall, it was a great stay with an enjoayble nd short walk to both Lamu Town and Shella.

  • Nils was excellent at getting in touch and answering questions before we arrived. The house was exactly as described. It was immaculately clean when we arrived. Plenty of clean towels, a well equipped kitchen, a nice paddling pool. The sunset on the veranda is very special. The plot is very large and private, Lamu is a great location. It's very easy to cook and relax at home. We had a wonderful time, thank you Nils and Hamisi

  • One of the nicest houses I've ever stayed in abroad. I would recommend this to anyone and I'm looking forward to come back. The house is very tastefully done, and it's eco and all. Also, one couldn't ask for a more knowledgeable and kind host.

  • Ivor was great arranged for my pick up form the airport by boat and was then shown to the property. Petleys inn is a bit dated but pretty decent as a budget stop in Lamu. The room was clean and bug spray was provided in the room as well as a fan. The rooftop bar was pretty enjoyable and the DJ on the friday was fantastic. The pool was also available for a dip after a long and hot day. The location is greta right at the seafront and close to restaurants and the jetty. Ivor was a great host and inquired at each stop to make sure i was comfortable during my stay

  • Our host sent some one to come meet us at the airport, and a boat to take us to his place. Staff helpful and friendly. Lamu is a laid back town and is a good place to just relax. Our rooms faced the jetty this providing a beautiful breeze. Lots of funfare during the day but very quiet from 8am.

  • Amazing spot in Lamu. As a first time traveller to the area, i had a few sceptical issues, but all my insecurities wete cast aside by the perfect host, and an awesome location. The rooms are as shown, and look over the pier where u can get a boat to anywhere. Restaurants are all within 10 minutes walking distance from Petleys and tgere is an iconic rooftop bar, pool, and lots of space. Ivor helped arrange transport bto different areas of the island at only 500KSH for your own boat one way. If sharing with locals its cheaper. Amazing stay... I mean you then get to brag that you stayed at Kenya's oldest hotel. #highlyrecomended

  • This is a strategic place to plug into the rich Lamu culture, right next to the jetty and on the beach front. The only expense was a bit of noise from the nearby mosque but for short periods of time, to me, acceptable. Ivor and his team were swift to action and excellent hosts, no complaints there. Choice of local food was in abundance along the sea front, pleasantly surprising

For women, avoid showing your tummy and wearing short skirts. Men can wear anything, but when walking through the streets it's advised to wear a t-shirt.

A quintessentially swahili home, featuring traditional hand-finished woodwork. It is fully furnished and all cleaning and lifestyle equipment newly installed. We have a resident caretaker who will prepare all meals and cleaning
  • On the morning of our departure it turned out that the caretaker we had talked to was not the actual caretaker, and our stay was cancelled by the hosts. Rudolf is transfering back the fee, and he's been responsive.
