Disfruta

My place is in beautiful Weardale, County Durham, close to The River Wear, the Weardale Way, walks, hill climbs. You’ll love my place because of the cosiness, the views, the location, the open fire..
7 Front Street is a traditional stonebuilt Weardale cottage, one of a small row of cottages in the hamlet of Daddry Shield near Stanhope in the Durham Dales. The cottage comfortably sleeps 4 and affords peaceful rural holidays to couples and small families. The cottage is pet and child friendly and is warm and welcoming with a sitting room with open fire and a kitchen with dining area to the ground floor and a family bathroom with two bedrooms to the first floor: a master bedroom with double bed and a second bedroom with two singles.
The cottage has outstanding views of Weardale, 'The Undiscovered Dale', from every window and is just a short walk from the river Wear and the Weardale Way. The cottage is equipped with all standard modern conveniences including microwave, fan assisted oven, washer dryer, TV with integral DVD and Freeview, Now TV and WIFI and a selection of board games. The cottage is just a short walk from the Weardale villages of St Johns Chapel and Westgate, both of which can offer pubs, shops, a cafe and children's play areas as well as numerous footpaths for ramblers and hillwalkers. Further afield are the historic country towns of Bishop Aukland, Barnard Castle, Hexham and Durham itself.

  • Cocina acogedora, elegante, bien abastecida y muchas toallas suaves

    Nicola2018-04-21T00:00:00Z

Absolutamente perfecto estancia

Newly renovated, it has 2 comfortable bedrooms, a luxury fully equipped kitchen and a cosy lounge. St John's Chapel has 2 pubs, 2 cafes, a shop and post office and the bigger town of Stanhope is nearby. Weardale is very popular with cyclists, hikers and anyone who enjoys peace & quiet and the great outdoors, Well behaved dogs are welcome (max 2). Introductory offers currently in place
If we were to sum up Lily's Cottage in one word, that word would be 'cosy'. The delightful lounge has been newly decorated in warm colours whilst the kitchen is modern and is fully equipped with everything a guest is likely to need. The outside space offers comfortable seating and is somewhat of a sun trap during the warmer months. There is a CAMRA pub just two doors away, where you are always guaranteed a warm Weardale welcome. We are both retired and can hence offer personal advice, airport/station pick ups or onward transport of luggage for cyclists and walkers. The cottage lies on the popular coast to coast cycle route. Lily's Cottage is an ideal base for either the Great North Run or the Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle route.
The village of St John’s Chapel has two pubs (one is only two doors down from the cottage), two cafes, a well-stocked Co-op, a post office and two antique shops to poke around in (one is seasonal).

Cosy and spacious home in detached rural location with sunroom looking out over stunning views of the North Pennines, a UNESCO Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Newfield is the perfect place for anyone seeking a comfortable rural escape. Remote but not cut off, Newfield is near attractions including museums, heritage railways, waterfalls, and cafes, and just an hour from Newcastle with its thriving Quayside.
Soak up the ever-changing views of the North Pennines Landscape from the sun room, or switch off the lights and see more stars than you've ever seen before in the night sky (weather permitting!) Alongside your patio there is also access to a shared garden with beautiful views for relaxation, or a place for a four-legged friend to stretch their legs.
A warm and cosy stay awaits at Newfield, a self-catering AirBnB set in the side of Sedling Fell. Newfield is very close to the spot where County Durham, Northumberland, and Cumbria meet, each with their own distinctive traditions and appeal. Nearby attractions include the Killhope Lead Mining Centre, the charming and historic small towns of Stanhope and Alston (including the South Tynedale Steam Railway), and breathtaking waterfalls including High Force (30 minutes drive) and Ashgill Force (20 minutes drive). The surrounding landscape inspired many of the writings of W H Auden, who called this UNESCO Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty "England's Last Wilderness". Most evidence of our rich mining heritage has now been reclaimed by nature, but old chimneys and mills can still be seen. The area is popular with: - Bird watchers (including the rare black grouse and distinctive curlew) - Stargazers (we have some of the darkest skies in the UK, and are a designated dark sky discovery site) - Cyclists (we are on the 'Weardale Option' of the C2C cycle route) - Motorcyclists (winding roads with beautiful views) - Walkers (many local routes with varying terrains) - Writers (the silence around Newfield is incredible) - Anyone looking for a rural escape with attractions just a short drive away if needed

Black Dog House is a grand place to unwind, relax and enjoy. The house and surrounding countryside have something to offer all ages and interests. The location is hard to beat, with breathtaking moorland, woods, mountains, rivers and SERIOUS waterfalls!
Black Dog House is grand for couples, groups of friends and families, with flexible accommodation and every comfort provided. The house is actually two19th Century stone-built terraced cottages, joined together to provide a damn fine place to stay over 3 floors, and has been fully refurbished - I should know, i was in there grappling the RSJ's through the bedroom window! There is plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing indoors, whilst the front garden is good for breakfast, and the rear yard is a place for evening drinks or a BBQ. The set-up can be seen quite easily from the pictures, but essentially it's a walk in to the dining room area with a wood burner, then through to a large sitting room with an open fire. the kitchen is off this will a large range of 'stuff' to get cooking with. Out the back there is a small office area with table and computer point with a door to the back yard. A jump over the wall and you're in the fields! Upstairs there are two doubles, one of which has an en-suite, a twin bedded room and a bathroom. On the top floor there is a big room (ideal for locking away children...) with a large combination of sleeping arrangements available. If you visit once, you'll likely want to come back for more .... 3 Star Gold self-catering award through Tourism England: You can also see us listed on the Tourism England (Durham) website. We just got our latest award from Visit England of 3 stars and a gold award for up to 8 people. We do have flexibility with sleeping arrangements as we have a couple of good sofa beds, so just ask and I can clarify. Who has stayed: Since starting two years ago, we have had a huge variety of groups stay, many of which have taken the trouble to give Black Dog House good reviews. It'd be best to read their words below, but in summary I would say we can successfully cater for most peoples needs, so do get in contact if there is anything that you'd like clarifying.
Westgate lies within the Wear Valley which is part of the Pennines designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; perfect for mountain biking, bird watching, riding, painting, photography and even skiing. There are lots of things to see locally - museums, mines, castles, gardens, railways, historic cities, Hadrian’s Wall 30 minutes to the north and the spectacular High Force Falls 30 minutes to the south. Only 15 miles further up the Pennines is the market town of Alston, sitting 1300 feet above sea level, and the starting point for the South Tyne Railway. The market towns of Barnard Castle, Hexham (with its racecourse and Abbey), Newcastle and Durham are all within 30 miles. The village itself has a riverside pub and small shop, playground and public tennis court, The surrounding area is renowned for its wildlife and Slitt Wood with its burbling and gushing beck (a 5 minute walk from the house) is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and bloomin lovely to walk up through. The brooding Hamsterley Forest is 20 minutes by car and is perfect for walks, biking and picnics. Other Activities: canoeing, orienteering, Golf: 6 Golf courses within an hours drive, both 9 and 18 hole. There's even left some clubs to borrow in the house! Ski: It was on ski Sunday for goodness sake, and you can't get much better than that! It is called Swinhope Moor (01388 527527; skiweardale.co.uk), which began in 1963 and is run by the Weardale Ski Club, comprising 14 volunteers. These include a fireman who works at the club in his spare time and a retired mechanic. They're up there in the summer cutting the rushes, and in the winter manning the two button lifts and the piste basher. There are seven pisted runs, off-piste slopes and a gully with jumps and ledges. They were awarded the 'Recreational Club of the Year Award' by Snow Sport England at an awards ceremony last month. I have also skied up on the county border with Northumberland. Minus 3, purple wax, and the skis and wax, plus boots are all available in the loft (size 10 large). 2 sets of everything. Have a look at the pub opposite; they do great food and it only takes 30 seconds to walk there! The arboretum to visit is in Durham

Our 2 bedroom, old stone cottage is in beautiful Upper Weardale, perfect for exploring the North Pennines, known as England's last wilderness and the 'roof of England'. Located in Westgate village, the local pub micro-brewery serves evening meals (booking required). Please be aware that due to the age and construction of the cottage, whereby stone floors are laid directly onto the earth, the humidity levels are higher than in modern houses, and you may notice a slight musty smell as a result.
This is a very old traditional stone cottage, providing basic accommodation. So if you are looking for modern fittings and luxury, this is not the place for you. But if you are the adventurous type, think of it as your own private bunkhouse! There is electric heating, BUT please be aware that in very cold weather, this kind of cottage is difficult to heat. Whilst we make every effort to provide adequate heating, it is essential that if you book in the winter, you are willing and able to use the solid fuel appliances to adequately heat the house. It can can sleep up to 5 persons - there is a double bedroom and a second bedroom with twin beds, plus a fold-out single bed for a child. The cottage was originally two "one-up-one-down" miners' houses, now joined together. It retains many original features, and has two separate (fairly steep) staircases to the bedrooms. The lounge has a multi-fuel stove and the dining room features a solid fuel Rayburn cooker. A small but well equipped kitchen leads off the dining room; and also on the ground floor is the shower room with handbasin and toilet. The double bedroom also has its own ensuite toilet and handbasin. Please be aware that the stone flagged ground floor can feel cold and therefore guests are advised to bring slippers.
Westgate is a very quiet village, but is part of the wider Weardale community of small towns, villages and farms. The walking around the area is fantastic, and the lead mining history of the area adds an additional layer of historical interest to a beautiful and rugged area. Upper Weardale is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is also within the geopark, having its own unique geology.

Check our own website for more at www.blackdoghouse.info
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - this part of the country is in my view wonderful without being spoilt by so much. The wilds really are - the woods are dark and brooding, the fells are high and the sheep are hard!
