History Museum
“Museum with an extensive collection of Latin inscriptions, predominantly originating from ancient Salona. In the early 16th century, Dominik Papalic, a nobleman and humanist from Split, set up in his house a collection of ancient inscriptions, which he found during the many walks with Marko Marulic, "the father of Croatian Literature", among the ruins of Salona. (On view in the Atrium of the Archaeological Museum are five original inscriptions that have been preserved from this collection). Marulic wrote the "catalogue", i.e. the "guide" to the collection.”

“Substructures are one of the best preserved ancient complexes of their kind in the world. Their function was to elevate the Emperor's chambers on the floor above, but they were also the storage area for the Palace. They regularly host painting and sculpture exhibitions, theatre plays, fairs like the International Flower Fair, gastronomic and oenological presentations, and many other social and cultural events. The central hall, representing the main communication line between the Riva and the Peristyle, is a place to buy valuable souvenirs.”

Monumento/lugar emblemático
“The best preserved of the 4 gates of the Diocletian's Palace is the Golden Gate (the northern gate). It was the main entrance to the Palace. For that reason it used to be decorated with statues of the Emperor Diocletian and his co-regent Maximian which were placed in the upper row of the niches, and in the lower niches were the statues of their successors. The richly decorated consoles and capitals are still in place. On the capital to the west of the gate is a small but very important detail – the name Zotikos chiselled into the stone, one of the rare names of those who worked on the Palace.”

“Peristyle is the central square of the Palace. Owing to its unique beauty and unusual acoustics, Peistyle became the ideal theatre scenery, perfect for opera classics and works of ancient literature, but also the stage where abundant urban life continues. Having your coffee on the steps circling Peristyle is a unique experience, one of the closest touches of a modern man with the ancient heritage.”
