Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls. The eruption at Kilauea continues. We are at the summit of the mountain. There is no lava here. USGS is housed locally and keeps us informed. Air quality is better than in the last ten years. It is not possible to predict what will happen in the future. It is safe here and the Kahuku unit of the park is open. This is a real treehouse. This is an exciting, awe inspiring time to visit. Truly a once in a lifetime event here. True adventure. #weaccept
This is a custom designed treehouse, built by the same crew you see in Treehouse Masters on TV. The Jurassic attitude of the rainforest is preserved on the grounds. We also have a wedding venue nearby you may view in the photos. Our volcanoes are in a spectacular phase just now. To see the effects of the eruption, you drive into Pahoa and down Highway 130, currently reopened. All roads open to the public are fully maintained. There is no known danger of being cut off between Kona and Volcano. There are many routes to take. *** Summer 2108 notes: The park is currently closed. This is expected to be temporary. It is due to what the park calls an abundance of caution during this cycle of the eruption. There is ocean entry of lava. The only ways to view the lava with your own eyes just now are by helicopter tour and lava boat. Land viewing is restricted to residents of the affected areas. Local effects of the eruption have included increased seismic activity. Our air quality has improved, not worsened, as the plume is gone from the summit. Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series. The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes. The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist. The kitchen functions best as a place to store leftovers after you go out to eat, with the microwave available to reheat them. There are plates and utensils so you can bring in take out and enjoy your meal either indoors or outdoors in solitude. The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. We are asked from time to time if more than two people can stay in the treehouse. We can especially understand that families would like to bring their children to share this experience. The treehouse is a two person space. Everything is designed to be a honeymoon experience. While it is possible for more than two people to sit together and chat, only two can sleep over. There is no rollaway bed, nor is there room for one or for any other furniture beyond what is there already. Hall of Fame: The treehouse has been featured in Extreme Cribs, on episode 13. The Ellen Show: Kim Douglas's Tropical Vacation Ke Ola Magazine Volcano Tree House story in July - August 2011 edition Trip Advisor: One of the Ten Most Romantic Places to Stay (global selections) PureWow feature Treehouses of the World, Travel Channel European segment, by Treehouse Masters series Buzzfeed blogs and news articles published globally You will have access to the entire property, including the small structure below the treehouse near where you park your car. You may safely lock your luggage inside that room and use the day packs inside during your stay. If you use a CPAP machine, please contact us prior to making a reservation. There is only one treehouse on the property. We live nearby and come by regularly to maintain the treehouse. It is likely we will meet you on arrival. Otherwise, we are available by cell phone, text, email. When we are away, someone else who lives locally will be available to greet you and take care of your needs. The treehouse requires daily attention because it is off grid. This is generally done between 11 am and 4 pm, and most guests are away for that portion of the day. We do ask that if you are staying all day at the treehouse, that you communicate with us to let us know when one of us can come up and take care of the place. The neighborhood is mostly old growth rainforest with a few houses here and there. When you drive up, you will notice there are neighbors across the street and next door. You will forget about them once you walk through the moongate and enter the world of the treehouse. Sometimes of a late afternoon and evening you may hear a local hula halau practicing. We hope you find the sounds of laughter and Hawaiian language and music adds to the ambience. A rental car is a necessity. While there is public transportation, it is a long slow trip up the mountain. Uber and Lyft are available here, but the distances are such that renting a car tends to be more efficient. The park is a couple of miles down the road, and so large you will want to drive and not attempt to walk. Volcano Village is about a mile up the road. You might like to stroll up and back. If walking into the village for dinner, a flashlight for your return is an absolute must. We provide - please take it with you! If you are planning a first trip to our island, we suggest that you stay 2 or 3 nights at the treehouse. Please contact us for for discussion before you reserve if you wish. The island is truly big, and most people would rather spend the night on the west side of the island rather than return to Volcano after a day of play over there. Although we show rates for long term stays, we would like to discuss plans with you before completion of a stay of 5 days or longer. When you decide you want to stay at the treehouse, you are coming to a place unlike any other. There are other treehouses, but each is unique. This treehouse is off grid. This means it requires hands on service, every day. For most people, this is a seamless thing that happens while they are off adventuring. Every once in awhile, people come and do not want to leave, at all. We understand, but we do want to let you know that we must enter the treehouse on a daily basis to service the composting toilet. The hot tub also requires attention. The treehouse is in the forest. It is inside the trees, and this means easy critter access. To keep them outside, we carry your rubbish away and make sure your food is stored adequately. It is not a good idea to leave unwashed dishes, pots and pans, for these same reasons. This is the tropics. There are insects. They are not as prolific here as at lower elevations, but they do exist, and will visit you especially at dusk with lights on. Spiders are residents of the forest. They are food for the birds. If you love the birds, please tolerate their food supply. We empty the house of spiders daily but we do not poison. The spiders come back at will. They are small, and stay in the corners. They leave evidence of their visit in the form of webs. We do our best to be inhospitable to them, but they persist. When there is weather, like hard rains and winds, from your perch in the trees you will experience the sound and feel in ways you may have not before. The house is tight - the weather does not enter if the doors and windows are closed. But the sounds can be formidable. You will feel close to nature. Because of the size of the treehouse and the fact that it is off grid, it is not possible to offer a regular kitchen. The storage space is inadequate for more than a couple of days worth of food supplies.
The neighborhood is part undeveloped rainforest and part lots with houses. There are no tract homes - every house is individually designed and built. There are no street lights so at night it is very dark. The forest tends to obscure moonlight. There is a hula halau that practices nearby some afternoons, and you can hear their Hawaiian music and chants late in the day.

A studio apartment with King Bed, private bathroom & 'Bali Style' outdoor shower, mini fridge with tea/coffee & small sun room. Wi fi signal. Apartment is at street level and right downtown in Hilo - close to restaurants, market etc. Street parking.
Enter from our garden courtyard, and hear the sound of running water from the stone pond beside the entryway. There is plenty of ambience and a feeling of 'sanctuary' here. This apartment is something a little exotic for your visit to Hilo. Charming architectural features include stone and teracotta tile floors, a timber wall and wooden beams. The Lohi features King sized bed. Lo'i' is the Hawaiian name for the wetland taro that grows in clear running water. This apartment was formerly a 'Poi factory' where the staple taro vegetable was processed and was a much loved icon for Hilo locals for several generations and since the 1980's it was converted to a clothing store where two leading Hawaiian designers got their start. ..Fast forward to 'now' and you will find this is a self contained apartment with a bedroom, a sun room, private bathroom and outdoor shower area. A ceiling fan helps to cool the bedroom and due to the helpful suggestions of our guests we have added extra privacy by hanging a curtain on the rear door. There's no kitchen here but there is a mini fridge and a tea & coffee station. This may work for travelers who don't plan on spending vacation time cooking. Once you step out onto the street, there are plenty of great restaurant choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner within one or two blocks of The Lohi. PLEASE NOTE THAT TO THE TOTAL COST PER NIGHT GUESTS ADD 13.25% TAX WHICH IS PAYABLE UPON ARRIVAL. This apartment is part of a complex of several old homes which have been refurbished and restored and is called 'The Lotus Garden.' On the property is a two bedroom guest cottage called 'The Sugar Shack' and a three bedroom vacation home called 'The Lotus.' Both of these homes are listed with airbnb.com. Our guests continue to let us know that our central location makes their stay with us easy and convenient. You can enjoy the convenience of being in the same block as some great budget cafes and restaurants as well as grocery stores and the Farmer's Market. Travelers on a budget could do without a car here if it's a slow paced vacation they are looking for..Most visitors do hire a car however just so that they can see more of the remote spots on the island. We hope this is a wonderful vacation for you.
Hilo is a great town to walk about in and explore because of its small size. The heart of Downtown Hilo is only 3 blocks. In this area you will find wonderful restaurants and several great venues for live music. Keawe street is home to a wonderful crepe restaurant, a Kombucha bar, a Kava bar and two great sushi restaurants. There's also a farmer's market on Bayfront and plenty of little stores to browse in. We love the slower pace of life here and the many artists, musicians and eccentrics who call this home.

Hilo is 'retro town' with old weathered buildings and a slower pace of life. We enjoy that town is only 3 blocks long and 3 blocks wide with plenty of grocery shopping and a Farmer's Market close by. In recent years we have seen more small restaurants open up all over town plus a few massage businesses and yoga studios. If you come from a big city you may be delighted to find that prices are lower for a meal, yoga or massage and the island grown produce that is also fresh! You will love being one block from Hilo Bay, the Farmer's Market and close to parks, gardens, cafes, restaurants and galleries. There is a movie theaters in the town of Hilo called 'The Palace' that screens foreign and 'independent' movies or has live music. Hilo offers diverse cuisines. Japanese, Thai, Mexican, French Crepes and Indian are among some of the choices you will find and most restaurants are affordably priced... Hilo also has its' very own Kava bar which often features live music performances in the evenings as well as the chance to try locally grown organic Kava. Travelers on a budget could do without a car here if it's a slow paced vacation they are looking for.. You can enjoy the convenience of being in the same block as some great budget cafes and restaurants as well as grocery stores and the Farmer's Market. Some of our guests do choose not to rent a car for a variety of reasons. When making this choice they usually narrow down the sites they want to see to one or two things and arrange for private or small group tours and spend the majority of their time in Hilo, walking, browsing or just relaxing.

If you like the sound of "glamping" (glamorous camping) in the tropical rain forest, this yurt is a perfect way to visit the volcanoes, waterfalls, and beaches of Hawaii. Privacy is assured, as it is located on 4 secluded acres of landscaped property. Close to Volcanoes National Park and just a few miles from two of the best coffee and pastry shops on the Island!
This is a canvas yurt with a skylight and screen windows. It was originally a fully off-the-grid home, but now has power. Propane stove. Water is rain catchment. Outdoor shower house with rock walls, front and back porches, and a separate bathroom with a composting toilet (flushes like a regular toilet, so no need to deal with the composting part). There is a queen bed, and the option for a full bed as well. The yard is full of ferns, palms, orchids, and fruit trees. It is a very private space; the only neighbor you will possibly see is the owner. There are no animals on the property, but adjacent properties have farm and other animals.
The neighborhood is native rain forest on the side of the Kilauea volcano, sparsely populated with houses. Most folks keep to themselves, but do occasionally go for walks along the streets. No sidewalks.

Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists (did I miss anyone? ;) ) will enjoy staying here a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! (Info on the recent volcanic activity: Our house is not in any of the affected or evacuation zones. Scientists & Volcano National Park closely track and know where the tectonic rift is and have a good idea of where the lava would flow due to the island's geography & tectonic activity. Our location hasn't been in the surface flows since people have started tracking it & it's not expected to be. :) Feel free to ask any questions!) This rental is one of a kind. It boasts a budding botanical garden, a stunning custom interior, and an eco-friendly footprint for travelers. In October of 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house themselves. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." After numerous phone conversations, applications, and interviews, the film crew showed up at our door a week and a half later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" and can be found on A.mazon or I.tunes. (Website hidden by Airbnb) (Website hidden by Airbnb) Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and 2 glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your visual space continues to extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding Ohia and Hapu'u forest. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We also made the stair handrail, futon coffee table, hand-towel hangers, and window handles from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you will keep this in mind long after you are gone, "eco" can also mean high-end!
Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. Once, we had a lumber delivery just drop the load it in the middle of the road. #private road ;) From the house only one house is visible in the distance. We have a lovely front neighbor and we know a few people down the road but essentially the surrounding jungle is all yours.

From our guests: “Exceeded our expectations! So much thought put into this!" "It doesn't get much better than this if you want a peaceful relaxing getaway! HIGHLY recommend" "Absolutely amazing! It's clean, quiet and super unique! The oversized hammock bed was an ingenious touch too!" "Loved the outdoor rain shower and waking up to amazing views of the forest" "Surprisingly spacious" "Impressive and indulgent" "Very convenient to Volcano National Park" "Wish we could've stayed longer"
Just 8 miles from the National Park, the perfect getaway is 16' in the air. This tiny house is actually quite large and features vaulted ceilings and windows everywhere you look, with trees and forest surrounding you. Sleep in the loft with the stars as you dream about your next adventure on the queen-sized Tempur-Pedic mattress. Listen to records on the daybed, grill on the large deck or relax in the 144 sq ft hammock-bed as you consider extending your vacation one. more. day. The lava-rock cinder driveway leads you through the hand-cleared jungle and solar-powered gate to your new favorite getaway. Park and ascend the stairway to treehouse heaven. 1st stop is the hand-weaved hammock bed roughly 12' X 12' large. As you hang there, checking out the numerous local plants and birds all around, you'll know it was 100 hours worth of work well spent. Next level up is sure to be a favorite area. The outdoor shower featuring a very large rain showerhead gently flows the natural rainwater the house catches from the roof. A curtain ensures privacy while you enjoy the view of lush jungle landscape. The natural soap and hair products you use ensure that the water that disappears through the floor helps to grow the foliage even more. Towel off and ascend the alternating tread staircase to the trapdoor. Because it's not a treehouse without a trapdoor. Close it behind you to enjoy the beautiful treetop views encompassing the large deck. Bring up your luggage with the pulley(!) and unwind on the outdoor sofa. Consider making pancakes on the griddle-stove or reaching for whatever you've placed in the heavily insulated cooler as you step through the sliding glass door and enter the main area of the house. Pinch yourself as you wonder if you're still outside. The 27 windows may play panoramic tricks on you because everywhere you look, more forest and sunlight follows. The naturally-stained wood siding throughout guides your gaze to the vaulted ceilings. Take off your shoes on the mango wood bench and stay awhile. The bathroom to your right just past the reclaimed door includes a waterfall sink encased in more local wood. Also, an eco-friendly flushing toilet and ʻōhiʻa tree branches that seem to be sprouting up all over the house. More trees can be spotted in the living room area of the house holding up the loft and lighting fixtures. As the sun goes down, the motion-activated lights kick on and you wonder why you haven't gone off-grid sooner. A daybed with twin-size mattress appears to be swinging in the breeze and its the perfect spot to listen to the growing vinyl collection on house-filling speakers. You can also make your own music as you have fun trying your hand at the vintage-style drum machine or travel back in time with the retro View-Master picture goggles. The kitchen area rests in front of the largest window of the house and features a hand-hammered copper sink, pull-down faucet, and custom-built cutting board which sits recessed in the countertop allowing easy preparation for anything you can come up with. All are inside of a large handcrafted mango-wood slab which it turns out is the perfect spot to prepare something to grill. Finally, after a long day of exploration, ascend the loft staircase to the bedroom. Here, at 23 feet up, the cathedral-style windows and 7' ceiling greet you and grant access to a view that has to be seen to be believed. If the stars or moon are out, bring them up close through the astronomy binoculars or just gaze at them from the Tempur-Pedic mattress as you drift off to sleep resting for tomorrow's adventure. Yeah, there's no wi-fi. Guests have access to all areas of the home, that's what I've designed it for! I think I succeeded in building my dream home, so please treat it with care so that others may enjoy as well. -The only exception for access would be underneath the house where the water is collected. There are a few machines there that keep the house running properly that would be best left alone. Here is a list of amazing amenities that are available to you: •Hammock Bed •Outdoor Shower •Organic Soap/Shampoo •Towels •Sofa, Daybed and Bed •Clean Sheets •Astronomy Binoculars •Record Player and Vinyl Collection •Harmon/Kardon Bluetooth Speaker •Drum Machine •White Noise/Sound Machine •Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB styles) •Kitchen and Bathroom Sink •Cutting Board, Dishes and Utensils •Cooler for Food and Drink •Solar Flashlight •Ample Parking I've designed this home so that you can have a truly amazing stay and be entirely self-sufficient. I have stayed in a great many Airbnbs and I've always preferred those that allowed me to discover the place on my own. I do not reside on the Big Island year-round, but I can always be reached by phone, text or email. Thankfully, my neighbors are great and I have someone who can help to handle any problems as soon as possible if they should they arise. The treehouse is located on a quiet gravel road just minutes from the highway. A few of the friendliest neighbors you're ever going to meet are nearby, but unless you pass them driving on the road, you may not have the pleasure. The treehouse is 25 miles from Hilo, 28 miles from Pahoa and just over 4 miles from Volcano proper. I've chosen this location for it's relative remoteness and designed it to be a perfect escape for couples or individuals seeking a getaway paradise. While there are a couple of great restaurants and places for groceries/ice/liquor in Volcano (check my guidebook for more info), if you have the opportunity to stop in Hilo or Keaau you will find the cheapest and most plentiful options there. A rental car (any size) is recommended to access the property, but hitch-hiking is fairly common along the highway if that's your thing. BEFORE YOU BOOK I want to make sure you enjoy the Big Tiny Treehouse as much as I enjoyed building it, so please read this brief list of considerations in full before you book. Thanks! I've designed this off-grid home with a dream to enjoy the comforts of a lavish hotel room that was stuck in the middle of a jungle. There are some minor trade-offs that come along with such a home. 1. The rich forest that surrounds the house grows so well because of the amount of rain that we get up here in Volcano. It's actually quite enjoyable to get caught up in every once in awhile and luckily, this house runs on rainwater! 2. The water caught on the roof and used in the shower and faucets is not filtered for drinking. There will be a large container of drinking water for you to enjoy for your stay. 3. The house gathers power from the solar panels on the roof and energy is then stored in batteries. (The less sunlight, the less energy can be stored for use.) When the batteries are drained from use, you will have to wait for sunlight to start the charging process again. I recommend using the natural light from the many windows during the day, the occupancy sensors will turn on lights automatically at night. *Laptops are among the most power hungry items which are best charged when the sun is out. (No irons or hairdryers) 4. Being a treehouse, it is 16' off of the ground. While there are comfortable stairs leading to the outdoor shower, a steep ladder-style staircase (7') takes you to the main house. I have installed an awesome pulley to help pull up luggage. *Please only book if you feel that you have the ability to climb a ladder. 5. People always ask about mosquitos, but in the 8 months building, I've never been bit! There are a few small bugs, mosquitos and moths outside that are attracted to light, but my neighbors always remark about the lack of them. Geckos are our friends! They help to keep the bugs away. Please feel free to use the mosquito spray located in the bathroom. 6. Besides some gentle rain on the roof, there are some other noises to be aware of. The water pump will make a small amount of noise as it is used. At night, coqui frogs will send you off to sleep as they lightly call out to each other. I've included a spa-style white noise/sound machine if you have trouble sleeping at night. I wanted to be extra thorough to include any minor hindrance (even though most Airbnb's don't) so you know what to expect because I know that your stay here will be a truly rare and extraordinary experience.
  • Sehr sauber und kühl! Danke vielmals!

  • A wonderful place to stay just minutes from Volcano national park. We enjoyed the rustic atmosphere of the home and waking up among the trees to the sound of the birds. The frogs at night can be quite loud, but we were happy to find that a noise machine was at the bedside to help drown out the sound. The house is full of these sorts of thoughtful touches. We will definitely try to stay here again our next time to Big Island!

  • We enjoyed our stay and loved the surrounding forest. Truly a unique experience that is unlike any Airbnb we've stayed in before. Convenient to Volcano National Park. Also, it wasn't as remote as I was worried it might be. Totally findable.

  • Levi's treehouse was such an awesome and unique experience! This was our first time staying in a treehouse and it definitely exceeded our expectations! So much thought put into this! Great location to Volcano National Park! We made it there is less than 15 mins. Can be a bit tricky to find in the dark but we managed just fine! We would definitely stay here again and it made us want one in our own back yard! :)

  • This is a truly magical place! We feel so fortunate to have been able to stay here for 2 nights on our trip to the big island! This place is so unique and special! The bed was one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept on (besides our own bed of course). Which wasn’t necessarily a good thing because we had to decide on whether or not we should stay in bed all day or explore Hawaii. Lol. :) Overall, we just can’t say enough positive things and We highly recommend! Suggestions: bring headlamps (just in Case you arrive at nighttime) Bring water Bring camera! You will want to take so many photos because it’s just so surreal and beautiful!

  • The Big Tiny Treehouse was the most unique and memorable Airbnb we have stayed in. In addition to the interesting design of the place, we thoroughly appreciated the little luxurious details - a very comfy memory foam bed, high powered telescope, awesome records selection, quality Japanese kitchen knife, good selection of spices, great little outdoor griddle, and overall just fantastic design that’s simple and functional without skimping on quality. Exploring each handmade part of the little treehouse was a delight. You can tell a good deal of thought was put into the usage of each area, and how to make the most of the space while keeping the design natural and minimal. We loved the tree branches used as handrails, and the wooden slab kitchen counter with built in chopping board was adorable. My husband spent most of the time lying on the huge outdoor hammock, or lounging in the outdoor living area. The location was perfect too - just 15 minutes away from Volcanoes National Park, and secluded in a forest, with only the sounds of birds, coqui frogs, and the occasional rooster in the distance. Mahalo Levi and Devin for our best Airbnb experience yet!

    Pauline2017-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • A secluded escape that is really exceptional to stay at. It has all you need and extra and with lots of very nicely placed details there is plenty to explore at the house itself. You feel like you stay in the middle of the jungle in a 5star resort with the option to get to the next shopping/social places within 15min. Would absolutely recommend to anyone who wants a relax & explore place to stay at.

Coffee, tea, and oatmeal are also provided for light breakfast. Basics cooking necessities such as utensils, olive oil cooking spray, salt and pepper are supplied. For local climate info and tips for preparing see the bottom of this description. The living area has glass french doors that welcome you in to the cottage. Once inside you'll be inspired by the beautiful pitched pine ceiling, large windows and 8 feet tall sliding glass doors providing a perfect vantage into the trees. At this height you can see the colorful birds flitting from tree to tree and the clouds rolling in from the coast. The living area is separated from the kitchen and bathroom, so each room is its own. The kitchen has hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry and quartz counter tops. It comes complete with a four-burner gas stove, small fridge, full-sized sink, coffee maker, and toaster oven. The bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with pebble floor and a rain shower head for an incredible experience. The big windows, flower-shaped vessel sink, quartz counter tops, tiled floor, and fluffy bath linens provided give the bathroom the feeling of a beautiful, relaxing spa. The outdoor garden is spotted with new, young plants but still evokes a feeling of privacy, peace, tranquility, and a change of pace from everyday life. House water is potable and chemical-free. Piped in from the outdoor rain catchment system, the water is purified with a UV system and filtered. The tree cottage was built by a local contractor, engaging local businesses for the materials. Shannon's hands-on management (even cleaning between guests!) and pride in ownership for the property results in a tree cottage guests can feel comfortable staying in. Climate info and tips for preparing: Even though you are in Hawaii, being on the side of the volcano at a higher elevation and in the rainforest means it gets cooler at night and the climate is changeable. It is advisable to wear layers and prepare for rain with water resistant outerwear for your outdoor adventures. Consider bringing warm comfortable clothes to lounge in or outside the tree cottage. Fleece is always a good cozy option here.
True to the Hawaiian translation of the street name, meaning 'beautiful forest', the property is surrounded by rainforest jungle on all sides with a driveway from the street. The tree cottage is set back about 100 feet off the street for extra privacy. Just two miles (four minute drive) from the infamous Volcanoes National Park and one mile away from the quaint and charming Volcano Village. This artistic enclave has an art center, gallery, gardens, shops, restaurants, lodges, gas station, and a nature reserve.

Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!

AUGUST UPDATE: The volcanic activity has stopped! The picturesque treehouse is not affected in any way. Mahalo! -- Welcome to your jungle bungalow which floats 15 ft up in the cloud forest. This house is custom designed for a perfect stay on the big island. Come enjoy this untouched rainforest oasis.
The house is equipped with everything you need to make your big island adventure a reality. The house is perched high in the trees (15ft). It has a spacious living area and a setting that is extremely secluded in the jungle (ideal for couples who enjoy their privacy), a bathroom, a separate toilet and a lanai (Deck). The house has a table, two chairs, shelves, and snorkel gear. The bed is very comfortable and has bed lights that spell out 'aloha'. The bathroom has a shower and toilet. Towels are included. Please NO HAIRDRYERS as the house is completely off grid. I don't have a washing machine but there are many places nearby where you can do your laundry. This space has an outdoor lanai where you can lookout at the ohia and guava trees while enjoying your time in Hawaii.
The area is arguably one of the most undeveloped neighborhoods in town and my house is located where there is no direct neighbors. Although it is just down the road from the most indemand location in all of Hawaii, Volcano Village, which is a highlight for 1.5 million visitors a year. You'll find numerous restaurants within a few miles in Volcano Village.

Our Retreat is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike the nearby beaches, forests, and volcanoes and to simply enjoy life. Our place is a peaceful spot completely off the grid in nature. It is 8 miles to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You’ll love our place because of the location, the ambiance, and the outdoor space. Our goal was to bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
This beautiful peaceful gem is located 8 miles to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The house is secluded off the road for privacy and to be as close to nature as possible. The house is elevated 15 feet but the bed elevates you 20 feet off the ground. It is quite a unique experience. Arrival You first arrive at a gravel driveway and a wood chipped winding path. You pass beside and under the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops and orchids as well as the tree canopy. The trail to our house is about 120 feet deep in seclusion. There are little pockets of ferns and flowers along the trail as well as a Ganesh and a Buddha keeping a peaceful eye on our little sanctuary. Downstairs Lanai You will find yourself on the lower deck/lanai. This lanai is surrounded by hanging plants and places to relax in your own private Zen. There is an 8-foot teak Balinese Bale' daybed to lounge in and it can be a place to relax that is also functional. During our travels to Bali, Indonesia one of our favorite memories is laying in a daybed surrounded by plants and nature, complete Zen and that is what we have re-created in Hawaii. This daybed is a beautiful space to be next to nature and relax, read a book, take a nap and enjoy life. Remember it is vacation time! Looking across from the daybed is a handmade teak bistro set to sip some coffee or tea, read a book or play a game. There are two half tables where you can make a cup of coffee or tea or pick up a bottled water. Downstairs bathroom The center walkway has two barn doors with separate bathroom and shower areas. The shower is a large space with a ten-foot ceiling and large shower "rainwater" nozzle that mimics the soft falling of rain. The shower is powered by solar and on-demand propane for heat. There is a bench to sit and relax and soak in the moment. With the forest in mind, the shower room has bamboo walls and hanging plants to create unique ambiance. The mist from the shower help feed the plants/orchids. There is cruelty-free and nature-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. Toiletries in case you forgot any are provided in the bathroom. Across from the shower is the bathroom with woven bamboo walls and a handmade Koa wood wash basin, flushing toilet, mirror, vanity and toiletries for the shower and bathroom are provided in the baskets. In the center walkway, there is another handmade Koa wood wash basin. Upstairs Lanai: You are now winding up the stairs and you arrive to the upstairs Lanai. Another place to breathe and relax. As you explore upstairs, the covered upper deck/lanai catches the rainwater to turn into reusable shower and toilet water. The covered lanai gives you the chance to sit out in the rain forest and watch the rainforest replenish itself. The animals and trees become animated at different times of the day. At night you can stargaze. The furniture is inviting you to “sit and take a load off." There you can breathe in the forest and enjoy the scenery and views of the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops. Towering above you, 40-60 feet in height, are Ohia, Koa, Guava and Eucalyptus trees which comprise the tree canopy. There are wicker chairs with overstuffed cushions and a cozy footrest for two. There are side tables for drinks and snacks and a small table you can play cards on. At night the Coqui Frogs will serenade you with their mating songs from the trees. Bedroom: As you pass through the keyless entry window door you will find another gem. There is an airy feel due to 12 foot ceilings and cathedral style windows in the trusses along with three 4x8 foot windows. Then you will see our little gem of a bed: we are very proud of our own designed “perch platform bed” that nestles you 4 feet in the air. You will feel like you are perched in a tree. The Temper-Pedic mattress makes for a perfect and tranquil night sleep. The view from the bed is a panoramic view from the 8x4 foot front bay window and on clear nights you can gaze at the stars through the cathedral style windows in front and behind the bed. Now it is your choice to watch stars, birds or the clouds from the bed. There is a built in closet within and beneath the bed where you can put your suitcases or hang your clothes. This bed has it all and we made it to simplify and organize your luggage. No messes, all hidden and contained in the semi walk in closet. On the sides of the bed are two sets of stairs and each side has their own charging USB station for your phone or tablet. Birds, amphibians and animals: Animals you may see in the gardens or in the treehouse: Coqui Frogs, a variety of lizards, Geckos, Jackson’s Chameleons, Endangered Pueo owls have been spotted intermittently at our property. The endemic black-billed ‘apapane, salmon-billed i’iwi, the white and brown ‘elepaio, and the yellow-green colored ‘amakihi are some of the forest birds of Hawaii that can be found. Additionally, feral pigs occasionally scamper about the forest floor but do not like human interaction. Pests: Mosquitoes. This is the rainforest so mosquitoes are common. We provide DEET and non-DEET bug sprays or you can bring your own. We do ask that you do not spray yourself while on our furniture or linens. It stains and is almost impossible to get out of linens. Mosquitoes: we offer bug spray Here is a list of the amenities that are available to you: • Bale’ Daybed • Bistro set and Rattan seating • Platform bed and closet • Outdoor shower  • Flushing toilet with septic • Cruelty-Free Soap and Enviro-Friendly/Shampoo/Conditioner • Towels • Ceiling fan and light • Clean sheets • Bathroom and center sinks • Ice cooler for food and drinks • Mugs and cups for drinks • Maps and Hawaii destination books to use • Cards • Board Games • Books • Outlets (3-prong and USB styles) • Flashlights • Ample parking • solar fairy lights • solar lights • local snack and water bottles • Bug spray and Citronella candles BEFORE YOU BOOK We wanted to be precise on any hindrances that you may experience we call it uniqueness but make sure you know what to expect before booking our space. We love our house and we are sure you will as well for a Zen –like peaceful experience. The house is off-grid and self sufficient but tradeoffs come with being unique and off-grid. 1. The Rainforest. The rain forest name says it all. How unique is it to be in the United States and in a Rain Forest close to a National Park? The green you will be surrounded by is powered and fed by the rain. It rains 30% of all days. The forest rejuvenates and replenishes with every rain. Our little house lives off the rain catchment therefore we enjoy the rain in all aspects: It gives life; it gives us water. You can experience anything from sun, to mist to torrential downpour. The volcano helps with this ecological system and therefore it is a unique experience to be had but rainforests are not for everyone. 2. The Treehouse, it is 15 feet off the ground. If afraid of heights this is a mild view but might not be right for you. There are only 2 levels of sturdy stairs to climb. No ladder like other places but if any problems walking back 200 feet to our structure or climbing 2 flights of stairs, you may want to reassess staying here. You will need to carry your luggage back and up the stairs. We have a wagon for use but you will still need to haul the luggage or items you are bringing to the house. 3. The Rain. The rainwater catchment system provides water for the water faucets, shower and toilet. It is filtered but not sanitized and in the jungle it is unwise and unsafe to drink the water. We provide water for you to enjoy during your stay. If you consume large amounts of water you might want to bring some with you as well. 4. The Noise. The rain catchment water pumps do make a small amount of noise but only when in use for showers, sinks, and flushing the toilet. The rain falling off the tree canopy does make noises when falling from 40-60 feet and hitting the structure and covered canopy. Additionally, there is a water trap for the structure on the back wall that does make a soft noise while gathering the water when the rain is falling moderately hard. At night, the Coqui’s chirping/singing can be loud. We love the serenade as it drifts us off to sleep but some are bothered by the frogs chirping. During the day and at dusk the native beautiful songbirds can be loud while gathering food and communicating with each other. Another is the stillness of a forest can bother some people that are not use to “unplugging” from technology. 5. Solar Power. The solar panels are located on the roof and batteries are located downstairs. When the skies are clear and sunny the panels gather sunlight and convert into energy but when overcast or raining the solar panels gather small amounts of energy. We have ample amounts but still limited energy. You can run your devices but must be aware of energy conservation because there is only so much stored per day and it is all dependent on the weather conditions and what you are consuming. No hairdryers or irons are allowed for this reason: too much energy consumption. We have battery operated and solar lights throughout the structure as well. Phones and tablets can be charged at anytime with USB ports but laptops should be charged sparingly. If you have a CPAP or BIpap machine and need to use it, we more than likely can accommodate- but must have specs and let us know in advance. 6. The Bugs. Mainly mosquitoes. They are not big but they are present in the rain forest. Hawaii does have mosquito borne illnesses, but mostly on the other side of the island in the Captain Cook area. Being in a rain forest you do need mosquito savviness. Wear mosquito repellant that we supply to you. If you are visiting Hawaii I would suggest buying your own bug spray and sunblock, you will need it throughout the island. With all these considerations…we absolutely love our house and find it to be tranquil while energizing us physically and mentally for the day. We love living in nature but being close to all things. 7. This treehouse has no cooking facilities. We encourage our guests to taste the different flavors that the island has to offer. • 8 miles (13 minutes) to Hawai’i Volcano National Park • 12.2 miles (18 minutes) to Keaau • 20.4 miles (33 minutes) to Hilo • 21.8 miles (35 minutes) to Rainbow Falls • 23.5 miles (35 minutes) to Pahoa • 34.8 miles (51 minutes) to the Lava Viewing area at Kalapana (no direct route) • 36 miles (58 minutes) to Akaka Falls • 45.3 miles (54 minutes) to Naalehu/South Point
The treehouse is on a quiet gravel road a little over a mile from the highway. The nearest neighbors are a few acres away in all directions. It is remote but close to all things. We have great neighbors but they love their privacy as we love ours. Orchid Isle Estates is surrounded by tree canopies and a myriad of orchids. There are some great restaurants in the town of Volcano as well as in Hilo, Kea'au and Pahoa. Please see our guide at the house for more details There is a little local store, Hirano's, close by for small items and a quick bite. There are two stores in Volcano, a big grocery store in Kea'au and more in Hilo. Farmers Markets are amazing here and no matter what the day you can probably find one open. I have a guide to farmers markets in my book in the treehouse. Our guide to the island sights is our personal opinion to find off the wall touristy and untouristy areas of interest. Beaches, farmers markets, waterfalls, hikes and lava tubes are all contained in the book at the treehouse. I also have guides for you to take as well.

  • This place is out of a story book! From the thoughtful touches of glitter on the shower floor, to inspiration messages, to a bottle of wine waiting for us, we really picked a great place to stay. The bed is so comfortable and self-check in/number lock is really nice. One less thing you have to worry about. DO NOT LET THE VOLCANO STOP YOU FROM COMING! Not only is the treehouse a good distance away, those living in the area are super friendly and need you to come visit! We made sure to tip well and often when we could. Some of the folks you interact with have lost everything.

  • Eerst adembenemend.

Sehr gut durchdachtes AirBnB.

Detached guest house with its own entry: one cozy bedroom with two queen beds, full bathroom, kitchen/living room with sofa-bed.
The guest house is tucked away from the road behind the main house giving you serious privacy. It's quiet because there is almost no traffic. The neighborhood is literally a rain-forest, dominated by native ohia trees and giant tree ferns. Our skies are so dark that on clear nights the Milky Way is stunning. Four minutes from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, this is an ideal base for touring the park and is centrally located between Ka'u and Puna. The national park is currently closed except for the Kahuku Unit in Ka'u. In the village there are five restaurants, two general stores, and a post office - check out my Guidebook for the island at the bottom of this listing. A farmer's market is held in the village every Sunday where you can get food, local produce, coffee, honey, and crafts. Local food includes the Tuk Tuk Thai food truck, the Lava Rock Cafe, Thai Thai Bistro and Bar, Ohelo Cafe, Eagle's Lighthouse Cafe, Ono cafe, and the upper scale Kilauea Lodge and Volcano House. Using us as a base, in day trips you can visit : 1. Ka'u, where you can see south point (1 h 10 min away), the green sand beach (requires a hike or getting an off-road ride when you're there - don't try to drive it yourself), Punalu'u black sand beach (37 min away), and a working coffee farm and Buddhist temple in wood valley outside of Pahala. 2. Hilo, and points north including Rainbow falls (45 min), Akaka falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, "scenic route 4 miles", and the Hamakua coast. Waipio Valley is 2 hours away. 3. Mauna Kea astronomy visitor center is 1 hr 20 min away at 10,000 ft elevation, but getting to the summit would take 2 hours and requires four-wheel-drive. Children under 16 are advised not to go to the summit. Volcano Village is at 3,750 ft. (1143 m) elevation, the main gate is at 4,024 ft. (1226 m ).
