If you're staying for awhile, we recommend checking out Peterborough, they have great independent restaurants (lots of vegan options), check out the Farmer's market on Sundays, some of our favourites include Hot Belly Mamas, Ashburnham Ale House, St Veronus, and the Food Forest.
There are also food tours (Kawarthas food tours) available that will take you through the city.

We love to take a lunch and make a day of it. The trip to Hastings has beautiful views of Rice Lake.

The cottage is located on the Ouse river which leads out to Rice Lake. You're on the north side of the lake, but there is plenty to see and do around the lake itself. At the end of the road if you keep driving past the cottage, you'll get to the lake. The best place to see the lake from land nearby is at 1100 Birdsall Lane (just one street over from the cottage).
The best way to see the lake is of course by boat, but you can also make a day trip of taking a tour around the lake.
