Laavu -culture (Lean-to / Wicket) is something very authentic and Lappsih. Go and make a fire on one of them, one hundred are found in Rovaniemi area, and each one is free to use.

For some astonishing views of the Polar Sun and during Night to see the city lights and a possibility to see and shoot Aurora on an easily reachable (by car!) open area with low light pollution head up here. If you are adventurous the road continues ahead leading to a covered junk yard by where you can walk on a wide open area, perfect for Aurora and star gazing.
The driveable forrest road continues to make a round trip on the arctic forest leading you to an other part of the city suburbs, if you want to take a small self-safari in the tundra!

Rent a car
Well this is not free, but for free enjoyment I feel it is an absolute must: Rovaniemi is a small city, with seldom public transportation and the distances in Lapland are big and the the temperature is often harshly low. To be free on your vacation I strongly recommend to rent a car.
