Takachiho Gorge is 1 km of natural splender — sheer cliff walls along a narrow river that you can walk beside or rent a boat that allows you to see its beauty from below. Takachiho is also the birthplace of Japan's mythology. Near the Takachiho Shrine you can see the cave where the sun goddess, Amaterasu, hid herself until she was finally lured out of the cave by a group of lewd dancers. Mimitsu, just 10 kilometers south of Hyuga, is a beautiful historical village that was home to the ship builders of Japan's royal fleets during the Edo period (1603-1868). One hundred and fifty years ago it was a prosperous commercial port that traded regularly with Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe. The wooden homes of the merchants that lived there are built with the same engineering that went into the construction of ships. While walking along the narrow streets of this village, it is easy to imagine what life was like during that time period.
