The gateway to Coromandel Forest Park. The Kauaeranga Visitor Centre is about 10km up the road, and has information on hiking and mountain biking, as well as swimming holes and exploration. Hikes range form a few minutes to many days.

At the end of Waiomu Valley Road is the Waiomu Kauri Grove walk. It takes about 30 minutes each way, and passes by old gold mines, and ends at a grove of ancient kauri trees. The track crosses the river via bridges, and once through a ford.
